Does bluetooth now work independently of WIFI? Afaik it used to be that you couldn't have both at the same time.
gmarx has joined #asahi
<j`ey>
RowanG[m]: not afaik, 5ghz wifi I think always worked at the same time, but not 2.4ghz
<rmk>
define "work". 2.4GHz Wifi and Bluetooth operate in the same part of the spectrum. Some chipsets have connections that allow them to operate without conflicting with each other.

I'm presently in an environment with 2.4GHz Wifi (which I'm using interactively) with an entirely separate BLE device sending its discovery beacon, and it doesn't appear to be a problem. There are probably a few retries when the two attempt to transmit simultaneously though.
<rmk>
I suspect it depends what you're using both for though.
<opticron>
Yeah, it depends on how much bandwidth you're trying to occupy on both connections simultaneously
<opticron>
a BLE beacon is very low bandwidth

this chipset has a connection to allow coexistence but it needs some configuration in the WiFi driver that we don’t do
<sven>
so e.g. Bluetooth audio may be glitchy if you’re connected to a 2.4GHz WiFi at the same point
<rmk>
well, I got a USB-C to USB-A converter today, and just tried it to talk to grub, and it doesn't work.
<rmk>
so still no functional keyboard in grub :(
<sven>
huh, strange. that should work :/
<rmk>
u-boot says "unable to get device descriptor"
<j`ey>
is it a funky keyboard?
<sven>
just to confirm because there’s a quirk with reconnecting usb devices: that thing was connected when you turned the machine on?
<rmk>
it's a logitech wireless keyboard with its USB dongle
<_jannau_>
can you try a different keyboard. u-boot's usb stack doesn't support all, especially gaming keyboards
<rmk>
it's the only USB keyboard I have
<rmk>
it works fine with other u-boot based devices

ok

it
<rmk>
bah
<rmk>
it
<rmk>
it's happy under Linux on the m1 mini
<_jannau_>
have you tried reversing the converter? does the converter work in linux once booted?
<rmk>
yea, once booted it's fine
<rmk>
I'll try flipping it over
<rmk>
and I'll try the other usb-c port
<_jannau_>
shouldn't make a difference if it works in linux
<rmk>
all four combinations (port and orientation) are the same

there was a question on here recently about power consumption. my M1 mini running asahi, with 1G ethernet connected is using 7.1W at idle as measured at the mains plug. peak so far appears to have been about 12W.

2 hubs is better? What does the 4 port have?

I remember Mar can said each drive has its own controller or something like that

I doubt it's better. most common config for usb-3 hub chips is 4 downstream ports. it's proabbly cheaper/easier to use chained 2 4 port hubs than a signle one with 5 or 6 ports
