<LegendaryAmerican> on a quick bent, I loaded a mid file through sequiter, and also did some track construction in there too, works fine. like I said, you would want the ability to configure the iconnectivity devices to get the most out of the device, but it just works in haiku.

<Skipp_OSX> PulkoMandy hey thanks for cleaning up after me in Tracker... It looks like the problem is that I messed up the CheckNodeIconHint() method to only look for attributes on executables. I still don't understand what I did was wrong but I guess it must have been.

<PulkoMandy> yes, quite complex if conditions with many checks, it was easy to misunderstand them. I hope the new code is a bit clearer
<Skipp_OSX> I'm guessing that CheckNodeIconHint() (now ShouldUseWellKnownIcon()) was the problem, not CheckAppIconHint() but the latter was also hard to understand. In my defense both of those methods were copied from elsewhere not my original code... yet perhaps I didn't fully understand them and may have made some logical change accidentally.

<Skipp_OSX> and then I guess I messed up changing mimeString[0] to checking for '\0' :/

<augiedoggie> i still have weird icon issues but i need to test on a fresh install
<augiedoggie> my trashcan looks fine now, it's mainly executables with custom icons
<Skipp_OSX> do thumbnails get generated for you augiedoggie ?
<augiedoggie> i don't have that enabled, but when i turned it on previously nothing happened
<Skipp_OSX> ok but you're having problems with icons with that turned off still?
<augiedoggie> yeah
<Skipp_OSX> hmmm ok, but can you turn that setting on and see if you get thumbs? You can turn it off again after.
<augiedoggie> nothing happens
<Skipp_OSX> same here :/
<augiedoggie> until i right click the files
<Skipp_OSX> oh... ok when you right click you get icons?
<augiedoggie> yeah
<Skipp_OSX> tttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttthhhhhhhhhhumbs
<Skipp_OSX> (bluetooth sry)
<augiedoggie> but they go away when i navigate away and back to that folder
<augiedoggie> same as my executable icon problem
<Skipp_OSX> hmmm
<Skipp_OSX> that seems like the attribute is not getting generated then
<augiedoggie> freshly built applications only show the custom icon when i right click them
<augiedoggie> and then disappear when i reopen the folder
<Skipp_OSX> I'm talking about images though
<augiedoggie> yeah, but i don't really care about images :P
<augiedoggie> the executable thing annoys me
<Skipp_OSX> yeah I understand but they are related issues.
<augiedoggie> right

<Yuzu> i've thought about doing porting work but i also don't want to step on any of the toes of the existing ports
<Niklas[m]> That statistic is really interesting. How does the decrease in activity fit to the many major improvements and new features that happened in 2021?

<rennj> niagra t1 was competitive if you need lots of threads...
<Yuzu> marginally.
<Yuzu> i've seen Sun's claims about how great the Niagara family is. i've also used them.
<Yuzu> the T-series weren't viable until the T4, and even that wasn't *good*
<rennj> hybrid storage thumper 7000 was ahead of its time
<Yuzu> can't speak to the storage side.
<rennj> just sun was already dead, they just didnt know it
<rennj> sun had grid computing..you know the cloud that amazon, google,m$ ...sun was always ahead of their time
<Yuzu> maybe so, but their processors were not very good.
<rennj> depends on what you need....
<Niklas[m]> Sun is one of the few major tech companies I don't hate. It's really sad what happened to them. They did so much big things as open-source when the big majority still didn't take open-source software serious.

<rennj> sparcIII vs pentiumD/4
<Yuzu> UltraSPARC III was marginal against a Pentium4 and got clobbered by Opterons.
<Yuzu> and T1/T2/T3 had single thread performance *far* worse than a US III.
<rennj> i use to piss the winblows team off with how much more data i could pull from san's vs those 2 cpu's
<Yuzu> US V would have been good, but it was a victim of internal political infighting.
<rennj> those intel cpu's where junkola
<Yuzu> after the Afara acquisition, which produced Niagara (yeah, it was an externally sourced design.)
<rennj> course the fiber hba cards make a diff
<rennj> the t1 was java cpu..multithreads ...
<rennj> 128threads and shit...what amd it finally at
<rennj> 64cores/smt2
<Yuzu> i'm well aware of what it is. i've spent significant time working with that design.
<Yuzu> i'm also very aware of its performance issues (generally, severe.)
<rennj> that was the workload they where designed for
<Yuzu> hearing from customers "wow, we already thought the US III was bad, and this manages to be much worse" was kind of funny.
freakazoid333 has joined #haiku
<rennj> coolthreads ... power vs performance
<Yuzu> except they still ran at 100W+ per socket.
<rennj> well the sparcIII compared was like 740/1000watts
<Yuzu> the fact Sun was pitching in-order microarchitectures for server use into the 2010s is kind of amazing.
<rennj> well the sparcIII compared was like 750/1000watts
<Yuzu> the UltraSPARC III was *not* 750W package power.
<Yuzu> that would be impossible to cool.
<Yuzu> no chip, anywhere, is that high.
<rennj> and the pentiumD/4 where space heaters
<rennj> sun 280R/480R had dual 750watt psu's
<Yuzu> yeah. that's not what package power means.
gouchi has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<rennj> yeah but whats being sucked down at wall you still have to pay for
<Yuzu> okay. the T5120 had dual 720W PSUs.
<rennj> ipc/watt is all that really matters
<Yuzu> much, much better, clearly.
<Yuzu> the T1-T3 were bad chips and the customer base largely rejected them. the T4 was okay, though the Power7 was better and so were high-end Xeons of the day.
<Yuzu> the M7 was actually very good, just overpriced. i heard good things about what Oracle did with the M8 but i never used one, and it was barely marketed due to the dissolution of the SPARC design group the same month the M8 was released.
x10z_ has joined #haiku
<rennj> fujitsu dumping sparc for arm was writing on the wall
<Yuzu> Fujitsu didn't really dump SPARC for ARM, except in supercompute. mostly they just dumped SPARC. it had always been an afterthought next to their mainframe business anyway.
<rennj> between 2005-2010 you should have already know it was dead end..even before the oracle purchase
<Yuzu> Fujitsu's SPARC R&D basically got free enhancements because it was closely linked to their 31-bit mainframe processors. their ARMs are products of the same family.

<AlienSoldier> Yuzu i still want a good native port of mame with Haiku GUI. Other than that, perhaps with RTOS background you would be good with drivers.
<rennj> advance mame is better
<rennj> .106 roms or whatever
<rennj> runs more games then normal mame
<Yuzu> AlienSoldier: any idea what driver area needs the most love?
<AlienSoldier> advance mame or 2003 mame, anything made native (not libretro hell). There is a "market" for haiku for stand alone mame cabinet.
<rennj> i just did compile job of both mame and advanced mame...advance mame seems to run more games
<rennj> same bunch of roms and advanced mame worked with more of them

<rennj> advanced mame and mednafen and you got yourself a nice aracde/console cabinet..1000+ games
<AlienSoldier> just lack proper haiku GUI to go with it
