<Niklas[m]>
Is there any PDF editor available for Haiku?
<Niklas[m]>
I normally try to avoid this crappy proprietary format,but I need it for work -.- I need to put text in a writable PDF
<jmairboeck>
Niklas[m]: LibreOffice can open PDFs but the output you get is not that great usually, especially because it can't use embedded fonts
Psud0nym has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Niklas[m]>
Well,it should ideally look the same as if I did it in Adobes proprietary shit on Winblows,but if LibreOffice is not too bad,I may give it a try.
<Begasus>
Not sure ... but maybe TeXstudio can import pdf files to edit? (never checked there)
<Niklas[m]>
I thought TeX is a completely different format?I'll have a look at this.
<jmairboeck>
yes, it is. You normally compile TeX to PDF nowadays, and you can use PDF as input image format, but that's about it
<Niklas[m]>
So not really a option to edit existing PDF files,right?
<jmairboeck>
I don't think so

I found out that Okulars form editing features seem to be enough for my file,so I'll just use that.
<jmairboeck>
ah, so you just need to add some annotations to the document? I thought you wanted to edit the actual contents of the PDF. For annotations, Okular works indeed quite will. I have used it quite extensively for university (but on Linux)
<jmairboeck>
or filling out PDF forms, I think Okular can do this as well
<Niklas[m]>
It's quite interesting,but there's still a lot to do before it gets usable.Doesn't work on real hardware yet and there's no networking support.
<AlienSoldier>
Niklas[m] first thing i imagined, that the 30M will inflate with time from here. No QNX or AmigaOS smallness will happen again i think.
<Niklas[m]>
Sure it will grow.If you want to support much hardware and more features,a lot more code is needed.

Sometime i think OS would be better to have tailored down version for specific computer.
<Niklas[m]>
That may work for macOS where there's only one single machine type that everybody uses (and yet that still needs more than a gigabyte) but if you want to support all different mainstream computers and laptops and want to provide a specific build with only the needed drivers for each of them,you'll end up with a mess of more than a million builds of the same OS.And then there's still USB devices which you can use on each device,so they all need
<Niklas[m]>
to be supported.
<nephele>
Personally I am happy that there are severall niche OS systems, it would be boring if we all worked on the same one :)
<nephele>
Niklas: iOS is also severall GB for the system... and there each build could be tailored to exactly the hw you use
<nephele>
though... that doesn't exclude peripherals :)
<Niklas[m]>
I agree.Different niche OSes fit for different use-cases.And I'd have way too less stuff to review if there was only one.

hello, ive been wanting to try out haikuOS on my main system for a while, but its never been able to boot of a usb on my main pc ever, ive just tried to boot it again today with the latest image i could find, and it imediatly got stuck on module initialiazation. I also tried to hold shift on startup to enter safe mode, but to no avail

It's just haiku, anyhow on EFI systems you need to repeatedly hit space instead of holding shift to enter the menu
<skunky3>
ohhhh, ill give that a try right now

I have a GTX 970, Haiku simply refuses to boot on it even with every safe option and a lower resolution selected

i have just tried turning on safe mode, and turning on the graphics driver fallback, to no avail

also, when haiku boots up, both my keyboard and mouse do stop lighting up, and no error pops up at all, its just stuck
<GriffintheFolf[m]>
I found that in general Haiku doesn't like Nvidia cards unless it's a really old one

Haiku has no drivers for nvidia cards at all unless it's /really/ old internal or probably AGP ones
<Niklas[m]>
I have a Nvidia card in my main computer and it works fine.Only in VESA mode,of course,but it's fast enough.
<nephele>
so either it works with VESA or efi framebuffer or it doesn't
<Niklas[m]>
It's a quite new card,I guess,as the computer was used by a gamer before.I don't know the exact specs.
<GriffintheFolf[m]>
for me, my present "Haiku box" is a Lenovo ThinkCentre M93p Tiny
<GriffintheFolf[m]>
Intel graphics and upgraded 8 GB RAM, it works beautifully
<nephele>
I got a Dell Optiplex 7010 UFSS recently, it runs great. I saw a new hardware compat topic... maybe I should add my devices to it
<Niklas[m]>
I'm already working on adding my devices.I think I have 5 or 6 finished of the 9 I could possibly try
<skunky3>
it didnt work with vesa for me, how would i turn efi framebuffer on?
<nephele>
If you boot in efi you get efi framebuffer, if you don't you get VESA
<skunky3>
i do have a thinkpad where i got haiku to work, but i wish i could get it to work on my main workstation, since that one is way more comfortable to use
<nephele>
There is no way to change the resolution after boot if you use the efi framebuffer also
<Niklas[m]>
My main Haiku machine is some custom self-made thingy with 16GB RAM,8-core i7 CPU and some Nvidia which I guess is quite new.The only thing here that doesn't work is Wifi (Broadcom...)
<GriffintheFolf[m]>
mind you, it could also be the weak Pentium in there, two cores, two threads
<nephele>
Anyhow, if you can't get it to work maybe make a ticket, even if the system does not boot to desktop it most likely will have made a system log you can attach to the ticket
B2IA has joined #haiku
<nephele>
I have two laptops with Pentium M and haiku runs great on those :)
<skunky3>
nephele, where would i find said system log since im booting of my bootable usb rn
<skunky3>
ill most likely get a radeon graphics card at some point, since im getting quite fed up with the nvidia one
<nephele>
usbroot/var/log/syslog probably or usbroot/system/var/log/syslog, not entirely sure (/system is a bit special, IIRC it respondes to the boot device normally)
<Niklas[m]>
Radeon is a good choice as Haiku is getting hardware acceleration with it
<Niklas[m]>
I'm also thinking about replacing my Nvidia with a AMD card.
<nephele>
Eh, that is a bit "meh". I'd say nvidia is a bad choice because it will never happen, but other than that It should be possible to support more cards, generally
<nephele>
I replaced my nvidia card with a 50€ saphire amd card two years ago, but haiku doesn't really run nicely with it, i need to use a custom refresh rate or wrong color depth (presumeably because of displayport adaptive sync)
<GriffintheFolf[m]>
<nephele> "I have two laptops with Pentium..." <- I was referring more so to compiling programs, it sucks with the CPU in my ThinkCentre
<Niklas[m]>
Hm,that doesn't sound too nice.I think my spare card is also a Saphire :/ I though that would be supported by the HW acceleration driver too
