Hello. It took me 2 days but now I'm finally able to build haiku. At first I tried using debian in a VM but I was unable to install gcc-multilib.
<anuragpd4>
E: Package 'gcc-multilib' has no installation candidate (This was the error) I tried using aptitude but that too didn't work. I figured out it has something to do with M1 macs having ARM based CPUs.
<anuragpd4>
so then I dual booted by old intel laptop with ubuntu and then I was able to build haiku from there
<anuragpd4>

I'm new to open source and I'm willing to contribute. Can someone guide me what would be a good place to start? Also, what is the preferred platform for communication? IRC or mailing list?
<anuragpd4>
The intel based system that I'm currently using to build haiku has HDD only so it is a bit slow to work on. I wish to be able to build from debian VM on my mac. How can I get gcc-multilib to install on it?

I am trying to virtualise haiku in virtualbox on my Mac and followed instructions as given on haiku guide, but I am not able install haiku in it.
<RaghavSharma[m]>
Whenever I try to run it, it shows me "64-bit kernal requires 64-bit CPU" and fails to run.

I tried to find solution to fix issue and found the problem may caused by disable of hardware virtualization, but CPU Virtualization is enabled by default on all MacOS with compatible CPUs so I don't know what is causing this failure, could anyone help me on this?
<BrunoSpr>
Are you sure you have a 64bit CPU?

<RaghavSharma[m]>
Yes I am sure I have 64-bit CPU
<rennj>
you run other 64bit os's in virtualbox?
<rennj>
and did you try the 32bit version of haiku just for testing?
<rennj>
i use vmware, but virtualbox might require the enable vmx,svi foo in the bios/uefi just like vmware wants
<rennj>
vt-x or whatever intel calls it
<rennj>
vt-x, vt-d one is for cpu other is for io passthrough
<rennj>
if its crapple m1 chip well i suppose virtualbox documentation is proper place to look
<rennj>
Intel® VT-x support requires that both the processor and BIOS support it. Although, if VT-d (Virtualization Trusted I/O is also needed, the BIOS, chipset, and processor must also support it.
<rennj>
love how the name changes...amd svi is now amd-v,
<RaghavSharma[m]>
<rennj> "you run other 64bit os's in..." <- Nope I don't run any other OS in virtualbox
<RaghavSharma[m]>
I haven't tried 32bit version of Haiku but I will definitely see if it works
<rennj>
so you dont know if your virtualbox install is working
<rennj>
chances are you got to check the bios/uefi

vt-x,vt-d enabled if its intel gear
<rennj>
if its m1 chip i dont have clue
<rennj>
verified your virtualbox is even working...

hey Begasus
<Begasus>
hi jessicah ! long time no see, how's it going there?
<jessicah>
not too bad, omicron has started spreading here, hasn't reached my city yet though
* Begasus
knocks on wood
<jessicah>
and not as out of control as other countries had been
<Begasus>
not infected so far by any of the variants, but it's going like crazy here (although they predict the worse is over)
<jessicah>
where are you?
<Begasus>
Belgium
<jessicah>
ah
<jessicah>
that was my guess, haha
<Begasus>
;)
<Begasus>
compared to other countries we're a pretty small country ;)
<jessicah>
:)
<jessicah>
I've been getting back into doing some programming stuff on Haiku this past week, it's been pretty fun
<Begasus>
nice!
<Begasus>
did you get a chance to look into the work done for texlive? ;)
<jessicah>
have to say, the BeAPI really is quite nice relative to a few other platforms
<jessicah>
nop
<AlienSoldier>
jessicah you are in the south side of the planet, it will probably hit you more when you get in your winter. I am in Canada and i still find it ridiculous when expert here were saying it was not so bad in south africa (of course they are in their summer).
<jessicah>
not something I personally use
<Begasus>
it was your baby jessicah ;)
<jessicah>
AlienSoldier: mayhaps, but we've been managing it pretty well
<Begasus>
anyway, some basics seem to work ok for me when I check with texstudio
<jessicah>
Begasus: well, was Anarchos that started it actually, and then I helped get it further
<Begasus>
ah, didn't know that
<Begasus>
just bumped poppler to the latest release and finishing up on latest (if they didn't update yet again) texstudio (localy)
<Begasus>
just don't have enough time to spend on Haiku lately :(
<jessicah>
I don't miss working on it, that's for sure
<Begasus>
jmairbroeck did a nice job on it, base is in the depot, but some things are missing to make it fully functional (there's another recipe for that)
<jessicah>
took hours to build after each change :p
<Begasus>
took over a day here to build that monster :P

<Begasus>
k, looks like texstudio is fine with poppler, will push a change to the PR for poppler in a bit and a wip PR for texstudio bump in a bit

RhagavSharma: vt-X is enabled by default on Intel Macs. I run 64bit Haiku without problems in VirtualBox on Mac. Look at your VM configuration, maybe you have accidentally configured a 32bit VM, which you can do even on a 64bit system.
