Does anyone know a simple way to send files from one Haiku device to another over the intranet?
<Niklas[m]>
I use Bluetooth for that on Linux and Android,but unfortunately Haiku doesn't support Bluetooth yet and I feel quite uncomfortable using transfer.sh for business documents that shouldn't go public.

Technically possible yes, but seeing as virtualbox isn't even properly supported in the first place I honestly doubt it

(AGMS) Niklas[m], scp should work, if you have SSH logins set up on one of the machines.
<B2IA>
(AGMS) rsync also would work for securely copying files. Don't know if it preserves Haiku attributes though.
B2IA has joined #haiku
tqh has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<augiedoggie>
it does if you use the -X argument to rsync
<augiedoggie>
but that also depends on whether the destination supports arbitrary length attributes

<Niklas[m]>
Thanks,but what I meant was something easy to use,preferrably graphical and with integration in Tracker.
<Niklas[m]>
Something like Airdrop,but for Haiku and open-source :D
<augiedoggie>
i think some people use dukto for that but i doubt it has tracker integration since it's a qt app
<augiedoggie>
you could try running beshare on both computers :P
<Niklas[m]>
I already looked for something like that a few hours ago.Typically for Linux,there are three competing applications,one by GNOME,one by ElementaryOS and one by Linux Mint,all incompatible to each other and made with GTK.Then there's Dukto which is cross-platform and available for Haiku,but it doesn't actually work.Another solution is Nitroshare which seems quite popular and still actively maintained,and it's written with Qt.I tried it and it
<Niklas[m]>
works fine with Linux+KDE Desktop,but not with Linux+Enlightenment because of the missing Tray.And on Haiku the two librarys which are exclusively needed for Nitroshare are ported and available in HaikuDepot,but Nitroshare itself isn't and the port in Haikuports fails to compile...
<Niklas[m]>
The Tracker integration would be nice to have,no absolute must-have.But Dukto doesn't work.It just doesn't find my other device.And it has been unmaintained for 5 years.
<augiedoggie>
heh
<BlueSky76>
Niklas: what about SMB? Shouldn´t be too much hassle to set up on the other computer, and is very easy to connect to from Haiku.
<Niklas[m]>
Network preferences shows only FTP,SSH and Telnet,but no SMB server
<BlueSky76>
Niklas: you have to install the fusesmb_haiku package, after that it shows up in the network prefs
<BlueSky76>
Niklas: as a client, that is. Never tried using Haiku as SMB server, but there is a samba package available too.
<Niklas[m]>
But that's only a client,correct?
<BlueSky76>
Yep
<BlueSky76>
In my case, I have samba set up on my linux machine and connect to the shares from Haiku with the smb client
<Niklas[m]>
Both devices run Haiku in my case
<BlueSky76>
Ahh ok, I see.
<BlueSky76>
Good reason to try something new. samba server on haiku ;-)
<Niklas[m]>
I have my computer where I mainly work on my Office stuff because it's more comfortable on the big screen and I have my laptop on which I take the stuff to my work place
<BlueSky76>
I just checked the samba package is only the library, looks like the actual samba server isn´t included
<Niklas[m]>
That's what I already suspected from the description in HaikuDepot
<Niklas[m]>
Maybe I'll get Nitroshare to work on Haiku some day.That looks really promising.

Haiku should definitely have some facility to share files between two Haiku machines

<PulkoMandy>
we have netfs, which you have to install as a separate package currently
<Niklas[m]>
I'm currently trying to build Nitroshare again.If it works,the problem is solved.At least in KDE it integrates quite good and behaves more or less like a traditional Bluetooth share.
jjido has joined #haiku
<Niklas[m]>
The HaikuDepot page of netfs doesn't have much information.Could you please tell me what it exactly does/how it works?
<BlueSky76>
Pulkomandy: thanks. I`ll take a look at it
<PulkoMandy>
Niklas[m], it's a network filesystem, you run a server on one machine to share a directory, and then you have a filesystem on the other side that mounts it like any other disk
WoC has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<julicenri>
Perhaps it may be a good idea to have a native implementation of KDE Connect eventually?
<julicenri>
It could allow for deeper Haiku integration, such as a plugin that uses a Tracker add-on for having a "Send to..." menu to pass files between devices.
<Niklas[m]>
I never tried KDE Connect.Does it support connections between two desktop computers?Looks more like a connection between a desktop and a phone?
WoC has joined #haiku
<Niklas[m]>
I just found that someone did a complete rewrite of KDE Connect for GNOME already,so it should be possible to do the same for Haiku.I don't know if it solves my problem of transferring files between two Haiku machines,but at least it's nice to have for people who use their smartphone extensively.
x10z has joined #haiku
<julicenri>
Yes, it is possible to share files between computers with KDE Connect.
<julicenri>
The limitation when sharing files between computers is that neither can directly browse each other's file systems.
<julicenri>
Something about security reasons with SFTP or whatever.
<Niklas[m]>
Sounds good.I don't want to open the access to my file system over the network anyway,only share some specific files
<julicenri>
Yeah, that's fine between computers.
<Niklas[m]>
Maybe it will work as-is on Haiku?I mean we already have Qt and most KDE librarys.It's worth a try :)
<julicenri>
Think 3dEyes attempted a port of regular KDE Connect in the past?
<julicenri>
FS access via SFTP is only available for phones from a computer.
<BlueSky76>
Niklas: There is some documentation on NetFS under /boot/system/documentation/add-ons/NetFS.html
<Niklas[m]>
Thanks.
gouchi has joined #haiku
<BlueSky76>
NetFS doesnt work for me, so far. I can run and configure the server, connect from a client, and the server shows that a user is connected. But in tracker there are no files visible and when running the ls command in the mount directory on the client there is an error "socket not connected"
<Niklas[m]>
I made a little progress with Nitroshare
<BlueSky76>
Both machines running nightly, the server is 64bit, the client is 32bit
<Niklas[m]>
I found out that it's the qt5_tools package that was missing (and also missing in the Haikuports dependenies),after installing it,it builds fine and runs,but complains that it can't open the port,no matter which port I set.Maybe there's some difference in how Haiku handles ports and how Linux does it?
<diver_>
Niklas[m]: what is exact error message?
<Niklas[m]>
Could not open port 40818
<Niklas[m]>
There's no Qt5X11Extras package,correct?Well,I think I found the reason why we don't have KDE Connect then

Hi PulkoMandy
<Vidrep_64>
What's the path forward for HaikuWebKit?
<PulkoMandy>
hi
<PulkoMandy>
I will fix the build for nightlies (it's compiling now)
<PulkoMandy>
and I have to make some changes to haiku to fix the flickering display in the current versions
<PulkoMandy>
then I have to wait for a new beta including these changes before I can do an update
<Vidrep_64>
In the meantime should I continue submitting bug reports for any new bugs or regressions?
