<DanaG>
I got a Surface Pro X for Windows 10 ARM, but then when I went to try Linux on it, I realized (as I 100% expected) that it's not very usable in Linux. But now I'm trying to figure out what WOULD be good to use Linux on. Lenovo X13S? Expensive for the amount of performance. Mediatek or Qualcomm Chromebook? Not sure which of the two performs better, or which one is more usable, and the lack of a Super key is annoying.
<DanaG>
Apple laptop? Expensive, and repair-hostile, but the reverse-engineering on those seems to be progressing much faster than some the other options.
<HdkR>
X13s is the highest performance Snapdragon laptop you can get your hands on right now
<HdkR>
Apple may be interesting if you need even more power
<HdkR>
Depends on your needs
<HdkR>
Pro X should support WSL2 if all you want is Linux at least
<DanaG>
WSL2's GPU performance is lackluster, once you even get it working (apparently by deliberately installing the WRONG GPU driver, then reinstalling the proper one). If I force it to render at native (not scaled) resolution, the same OpenGL benchmark will go from over 200 fps down to like 15 FPS.
<DanaG>
And that's for the same actual pre-scaling window resolution being rendered by the benchmark.
<HdkR>
X13s also has the issue that sometimes the GPU periodically crashes under heavy workloads. Most people aren't affected by that though
<DanaG>
I suppose one approach I can take is just to wait until Asahi has DisplayPort over USB-C working, and look at prices of stuff then. Who knows, maybe there will be some new non-Apple options too.

Well, qzed may have some insight into surface pro X and Linux
<Dylanger>
Almost got it working last night, then updated and it crashed so now I may as well install Fedora so that I get SELinux

Hi clover[m], with what options can I reinstall all packages from my EndeavourOS installation on my x13s at yay/pacman? I got some files away during fsck. yay/pacman still works.
<steev>
sometimes, it's usually better to just ask the question and anyone who knows the answer can chime in. i'm working so only sorta paying attention to irc

Can you please tell me if there is any work in progress to fix the x13s built-in microphone?
<agl7>
steev & clover[m]: When I boot Debian I can easily access the ACASIS external interface box via USB-C (with multiple USB ports, SD and mSD reader, an RJ45 interface (Network) and an SSD). When I boot EndeavourOS with the kernel provided by clover[m]/ironrobin (as far as I know it is also a patched steev kernel), I can NOT access the ACASIS box. I mean this must be a kernel configuration problem of clover[m]'s kernel. Some settings/modules must be
<agl7>
missing in clover[m] kernel configuration so that the USB ACASIS box can't be accessed, right?
<clover[m]>
You are welcome to go to the git repo and change whatever kernel configuration you need.
<clover[m]>
I can use USB-C dongles just fine with the kernel though
<agl7>
I can use the USB-C direct, for example my ethernet adapter, but I can not access the ACASIS box and the USB ports on it.
<agl7>
Under Debian also with steev's kernel all works.
<agl7>
I don't know which switch/module is missing.
<steev>
compare the config diff?
<agl7>
steev: I'm already on it!
<steev>
that's about al i can suggest, i do not use arch nor endeavor and couldn't even begine to know what is different

steev & clover[m]: The diff is very big
<clover[m]>
I just use laptop defconfig to generate the diff so its weird there is a difference. You can open an issue on the github and I will take a look when I can.

i don't know how the debian one would be different if the laptop defconfig was also used there
<agl7>
steev & clover[m]: I have found some (ca. 6) drivers which are different to the .config from johan_defconfig. Now it works. I can access the ACASIS box and the ethernet adapter which is connected to the ACASIS box. Here in Europe is it now 1:05 am o'clock ... I'am going to bed because I must work. I'll continue tomorrow.

if you are using johan's config.... that's why. his config is cut down to just what is needed to debug the device

im using laptop defconfig for arch / endeavourOS
