"Note: installing the Asahi Linux desktop images to a USB drive automatically isn’t supported right now, though if you’re adventurous enough it’s not terribly hard to do manually :-)"
<ChaosPrincess>
if you want to do that, when picking what system to install pick - uefi environment only
<ChaosPrincess>
then put rootfs on usb

<j`ey>
amdp: do you actually want to do that?
<ChaosPrincess>
but the uefi environment must be on internal
<j`ey>
its a bit confusing from what youve said
<psykose>
you can look at https://github.com/AsahiLinux/asahi-installer/issues/96 if you want more ideas, but the actual bootloader has to be on internal nvme and you still have to repartition so you're not gaining much by keeping the rest of the system on a usb
<amdp>
hmm and why does it work with an external monterei-ventura usb?
<amdp>
monterey*
<ChaosPrincess>
because when you do it, the system firmware copies the bootloader to internal, and then reboots
<ChaosPrincess>
this one assumes that the uefi environment is installed on internal
<j`ey>
amdp: have you ran/completed the asahi installer?
<ChaosPrincess>
at the end it even tells you that it wants you to run commands from uefi environment, which it assumes is installed
<amdp>
the run bootcmd_usb0 command?
<ChaosPrincess>
yea, that must be run from uefi environment
<amdp>
ali
<amdp>
alright sorry if I insisted
<amdp>
I understood the whole process now! Thanks!
<ChaosPrincess>
there are basically 3 parts to the install - apfs partition with m1n1 and random apple junk, efi partition, and rootfs
<ChaosPrincess>
first one must be on internal - rest can go anywhere

okay, very kind of you
<amdp>
thanks guys!
<milek7_>
you could install m1n1 on external drive, but currently it is not very useful because it cannot chainload from usb

milek7_ what do you mean? about m1n1 on usb

that you can install apfs container with m1n1 on external drive (using experimental installer), but currently it cannot load next stage from external drive anyway

<milek7_>
maybe you could bundle u-boot with it, but then it would require going through 1TR for every update and violate asahi scripts assumptions about install structure, so that's not really recommended
<milek7_>
for now the expected setup is that you have apfs container and system-esp on internal drive, and you can boot from other esps on external drives
<amdp>
that you can install apfs container with m1n1 on external drive (using experimental installer), but currently it cannot load next stage from external drive anyway
<amdp>
hmmmm
<amdp>
so I could build a ventura on external hard drive and then install asahi there
<milek7_>
no
<amdp>
why
<amdp>
"USB drive is not a real hard drive. It is recognized as a portable device on Mac. The internal controller chip of USB is unable to handle requests made by macOS." :(
<amdp>
so in theory you could install asahi in an external ssd
<amdp>
where is the "experimental installer", is the standard one for asahi or another one?
