<jmr2> Hey. Just finished updating my (non-Glanzmann) Debian setup on my M1 Air for the first time since the summer. Using the non-edge version.
<jmr2> Only thing that caught me off-guard was that I used to use the u-boot dtbs, which at this time are causing a "apple_soc_cpufreq_init: failed to get cluster info" error in dmesg. Easily fixed by using the kernel ones.
<jmr2> Great work everyone! Thanks!

<tpw_rules> so is the pulseaudio patch necessary at all with pipewire?
<tpw_rules> or are there other pulseaudio showstoppers?
millenialhacker has joined #asahi
<chadmed> upstream pipewire works fine
<chadmed> pipewire ships its own PA implementation
<tpw_rules> not sure of the significance of that last comment
<chadmed> you dont need any PA patches if youre using pipewire
<tpw_rules> ok
<chadmed> even when using its pulseaudio emulation thingy
<tpw_rules> does pulseaudio work okayish if you do use it?
<chadmed> yeah pipewire-pulse works fine with no patches
<tpw_rules> no i mean not involving pipewire at all
<chadmed> oh right, i havent used PA in a very long time so i cant say for certain
<chadmed> i dont think the patches fixed _everything_ which is why we switched at the last minute
<tpw_rules> ok, i'll poke at it myself a bit then. thank you
<chadmed> we wont be supporting PA at all once the speakers are enabled anyway

<cy8aer> hm, because my 3.5 plug still does not work on my mbp14 with 6.1-rc6 (when self compiling): Which modules are needed for the mbp14 headsets?

<cy8aer> hm, all loaded. And - of course alsa-ucm-config
<povik> alsa-ucm-config-asahi
<povik> or rather 'conf' in place of 'config' i think
<cy8aer> yes I meant alsa-ucm-config-asahi placed at right place
<povik> does it show up on 'aplay -l'? any macaudio messages in dmesg?
<cy8aer> Yes two cards: MacBook Pro J314 are shown with aplay -l. The plug of the headset is detected and Detected mic. But the device is not shown in the (Gnome) audio settings
unicordion has joined #asahi
<cy8aer> All Jack ADC and DAC on 100% set in alsamixer
<povik> you have issues with ucm. are you running pipewire or pulseaudio? do you have /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/conf.d/macaudio/MacBook... ?
<povik> are you sure that's two cards in aplay -l, not one?
<cy8aer> yes, two cards.
<cy8aer> o, it is two devices and one card sorry.
<cy8aer> and /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/conf.d/macaudio/MacBook* exist
<cy8aer> (actual git head)
<povik> hm, and pipewire/pulseaudio?
<cy8aer> Pipewire (3.60)
<povik> then i think there's some pipewire library you are missing for devices to show up in gnome settings
<povik> you can do quick speaker-test -D hw:0,0 test to check the headphone is ok. beware it will be loud if you have Jack DAC at 100%!
<cy8aer> hm, ok i will try
unicordion has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<cy8aer> "Unable to set hw params for playback: Invalid argument" - looks like hw:0,0 does not exist.
mac456 has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<povik> strange. are you passing anything else to speaker-test? is there something noteworthy you changed on your setup?
<cy8aer> ah, it is hw:0,1
<povik> if it works with hw:0,1 you must have touched the Primary/Secondary muxes in alsamixer
<povik> i thought i left headphones unroutable to hw:0,1. let me check the macaudio sources
<cy8aer> Ah, probably I tried it a few months earlier with a not working kernel...
<cy8aer> ok, I will try to play around with the alsamixer settings and will report if it is working then.
<povik> huh, i seem to have left it in, it's allowed
<cy8aer> yeah and it was set to secondary
<povik> cy8aer: ok. i think some userspace service restored the alsamixer settings from when you were trying it earlier. and that's what making pipewire reject the ucm settings, since it can't open hw:0,0 where it expects the headphones
<povik> as you probably pieced together too
<povik> set it to primary and reset pipewire, see if that helps
<povik> if not, see if you can reset that saved alsamixer settings. if you find out what service/daemon does the restoring, please let me know
<marcan> we probably need to make the UCM config force set sane settings
<j`ey> audio stuff sounds (heh) so complicated to setup
<cy8aer> Great it works now! https://v.g3la.de/watch?v=lQ9qymAo3PY
<povik> yeah, ucm should probably set the headphone mux that's wreaking havoc here
<povik> let me do that before i get dinner :)
<cy8aer> Yes, thank you.
<povik> yours should now work without any change to ucm unless you touch the mux again
<povik> something on your system remembers the settings and restores them on restart
<povik> is that the vanilla asahi distro?
<cy8aer> yes the alsa settings are persistent. No I am working with Debian testing
<povik> must be some service
<cy8aer> (Glanzmann kernels)

<j`ey> "(do NOT choose to enable full security when prompted, as this will uninstall m1n1)"
<j`ey> I forgot what it's called, 'permissive' I think, is the one you needed

<yuka> Guess what the readme says
<j`ey> you might just be able to use the installer's new m1n1 upgrading thing, not sure

<marcan> rather you can use the installer's "fix my install" mode

<yuka> https://termbin.com/vvdy <- some more of the dmesg
<yuka> it continues to boot, but backlight control etc. don't work
<yuka> this is randomly, about every 5th boot I'd say
<as400> out of curiosity - question to people running with lina's agx driver. How much more time on battery can we expect ? Roughly of course.
<yuka> not much
<jannau> yuka: is that message flanked by dart init messages? if yes reverting d9588077b8f82611286e564fe9f12d7e3afabbc6 "arch: arm64: apple: t8103: Add dcpext/dispext0 nodes" should workaround that
<yuka> as400: being able to turn down your backlight level will do more than the gpu driver currently ;)

<thasti> Hi :) Using the kernel from asahi-dev (not -edge) on an M2 MBA, I experience infrequent (~every couple of hours) connection drops for both Bluetooth and Wifi (not necessarily at the same time, I think). It's been like that for a few weeks on this kernel, and I update regularly. Is that a known feature?
kenzie7 has quit []
kenzie7 has joined #asahi
<jannau> Znullptr: both u-boot and kernel had bugs which trigger with the system-wide nvme/smc firmware installed by ventura
<jannau> those bugs broke booting. it's possible to rescue it manually but reinstall is probably easier
kenzie7 has quit []
<jannau> thasti: I haven't heard similar reports. Do you notice anything in the vicinity of the connection drops? do you use a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz wifi?
kenzie7 has joined #asahi
<thasti> for BT, it manifests as a disconnect of my bluetooth speaker (audio stops), followed by reconnecting a few moments later (audio resumes) - in parallel I get a desktop notification saying "... disconnected" followed by "... connected". no related messages in dmesg afaict
<thasti> my home wifi is dual-band, but according to the AP the MBA is connected to 5G
<thasti> the signature for the wifi dropouts is very similar (connection drop, associated with drop of traffic and sometimes loss of active connections)
<thasti> the wifi one feels like it's happening less frequently, however I have no similar issues with other devices here using the same BT device/wifi network
<thasti> the only related thing I can spot in dmesg is that i'm sporadically seeing "ieee80211 phy0: brcmf_p2p_send_action_frame: Unknown Frame: category 0x5, action 0x4", but not sure now if that coincides in time with the wifi reconnects or not
<j`ey> I get that too, seems unrelated
