bluetail: no, nothing is done to pipewire or ALSA that would prevent an external sound card from showing up
<povik>
check with 'aplay -l' whether the sound card registers at kernel level

povik the soundcard does not register at kernel level but sudo dmesg | grep RME registers my card and alsamixer lists my card under /proc/asound/cards. It is particularly weird. Could it be I have to use a USB type C port instead of a usb type a port?
bluetail1 has joined #asahi
<bluetail1>
dang, I dc'ed. povik did u get my message?
<bluetail1>
it appears theres no difference using the usb type c port
<bluetail1>
I mean if you look at the log, it says it cannot startup because of errors
<bluetail1>
sigh. Is there a way to reset pipewire-pulse? I already have reinstalled pipewire, pipewire-pulse, replaced wireplumber with 'pipewire-media-session', because thats something I found as a recommended step from the maintainers... and no diff
<bluetail1>
And I deleted the config files already

is there a chance audio wouldnt work when connectred through VNC?
<bluetail>
I'm so sorry. Anyhow, aplay -l did not list any soundcard before
<bluetail>
I post what it does now
<bluetail>
oh wait, perhaps I can scroll back
<povik>
doesn't matter, it just doesn't make sense aplay -l wouldn't show a card that other alsa tools see
<bluetail>
oh, I understand!
<bluetail>
my assumption is either a misconfiguration or a wireplumber issue still

Hi, I've been having an issue where SDDM won't start an X session often, but it will work on the second, third, or fourth tries (it just goes to a black screen then back to SDDM). As well as this, running startx from a tty always fails with it failing to load simpledrm because /usr/lib/dri/simpledrm_dri.so doesn't exist. However, it exits with 0, and the only alarming line of the Xorg log is '[ 98220.808] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does
<povik>
no, wireplumber shouldn't have anything to do with that
<capta1nt0ad>
not exist, 0)'. This has only been happening for a week or so, and I'm using linux-asahi 19.5.0. It doesn't happen with Wayland, but in Wayland Plasma seems to be quite broken. Anyone else having this problem?
<povik>
it works at a higher level
MajorBiscuit has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]

I don't get it then. wireplumber-git reinstalled a couple packages. And if I remember properly, something pipewire was in conflict with jack, so I allowed it to use jack instead

capta1nt0ad I know a workaround - you can use emptty as a display manager instead. It works on my end

_jannau_: you have simpledrm in kernel config?
<as400>
jannau: are you using x11 or wayland ?
<_jannau_>
simpledrm built -in, appledrm as module but that shouldn't matter once appledrm is loaded
<_jannau_>
wayland
<as400>
maybe that makes a difference
<mps>
oh there is CONFIG_BACKLIGHT_GPIO=y, maybe this is my issue
<as400>
I'm on x11 - for me it's seems smoother
<_jannau_>
the gpio backlight can be still used to turn the backlight off completely

I'm running debian version of asahi .... tried building updated kernel based on asahi-6.1-rc5-9 tag to hopefully get some DCP sweetness, but gdm did not want to start after update. :/ .... anyone got ideas where I should be looking (and if the newer version has a chance of getting my m1pro hdmi output working)?

hmm, apparently not the same error... one is from `devm_request_mem_region` which is non-fatal, but `devm_aperture_acquire_from_firmware` before that errors out.

sven: USB3 also seems to work, I'm getting 160 MB/s read from the usb stick. \o/
<bluetail>
Glanzmann on usb type a or usb type c?
<bluetail>
I can tell you, I get 560mb/s on the usb type c port with my sata ssd

<Glanzmann>
bluetail: Yeah, I'm supposed to watch my kids in another room, so I picked whatever usb device was lying around ... But I can check with an intel 550 sata ssd later.
<bluetail>
you don't have to

bluetail: I thought the usb-a on mini was always USB3. But I think I never benchmarked it.
<bluetail>
it is usb a but it doesnt work for high-bandwidth yet it seems
<bluetail>
I mean it does on macos, but not on asahi... using a ugreen enclosure
<Glanzmann>
Let me check.
<Glanzmann>
bluetail: I can reproduce. First 30 seconds or so is 256 MB/s and than it drops ... giving me an average of 70 MB/s and I know the device can do sustained 550 MB/s. I connected an intel 520 ssd using a usb-c to usb-a dongle to the mini usb-a port. Let me check the usb-c.
<bluetail>
Glanzmann its worse than that, it actually seems to drop connection at some time, doing non-sensical thingies
<Glanzmann>
What I don't understand is that on my Intel nuc I get 100 MB/s more, but the usb-c appears to be stable and is fast enough for a spinning disk.
<bluetail>
Me neither.

sven: Yes, usb-c works better. Good job. Let me compare to my intel nuc. I'll benchmark and paste the numbers.
<jannau>
using a SuperSpeed Plus Gen 2x1 USB to nvme adapter: "256060514304 bytes (256 GB, 238 GiB) copied, 263,103 s, 973 MB/s"
<Glanzmann>
jannau: wow.
<sven>
ok. benchmarks are more interesting vs mac os. intel nuc is different hardware so there's too many differences
<Glanzmann>
Sven, let me benchmark vs macos than.
<jannau>
usb-c port of the m2 macbook pro 13"
<sven>
macos will be different as well but if there are major differences there might be something missing
<Glanzmann>
jannau: Can you paste me where I can buy such a thing?
<sven>
such a pity these things only support 2x2 speeds in usb4 mode
<Glanzmann>
So probably noone wants to hear this, but when I boot the same kernel, I booted before after the ventura updates, my ethernet works. And the dmesg looks a lot different: https://pbot.rmdir.de/2PTInU3oVVwCzTtJXOZ-FQ
<Glanzmann>
opticron: If I understood Pedro Sánchez correctly, than our working theory is that the firmware comes from the currently selected boot device.
<Glanzmann>
So me updating another macos install on the same system should not have any affect on my LInuyx partition which I have not touched for ages.
<Glanzmann>
But maybe I screwed something up, or missed something different.

Glanzmann, I thought there were 2 different sets of firmware, the boot-linked firmware and then system firmware. I may be wrong, though
<sven>
yes, there’s ANS, SEP, SMC, and possibly something I forgot which are all system wide
<Glanzmann>
opticron / sven: I see, thank you for bringing me up2speed.
