<jmr2>
Hey folks... a little help please. Following the discovery that my SystemRecovery is still 12.2.1, I decided to do come cleanup.
<jmr2>
I used to have three installation of m1n1 - with 12.01, 12.1 and 12.3, with only the 3rd one paired with an ESP. Deleted the two oldest.
<jmr2>
I ran the current ALARM installer, non-expert, in m1n1/UBoot/ESP mode. The plan was to keep the same rootfs, move the content of my (custom) ESP to the new one, and then delete the last old m1n1 install.
<jmr2>
Except that I don't have to do it - regardless if I use the old or the new bootpicker entry, I get the grub menu, with my usual entries and configs, and everything boots as it used to.
<jmr2>
Is it really that simple, or do I have some mixups in my stub + ESP associations? Can I safely delete the old m1n1 stub & EFI?
<jmr2>
So it was really booting using m1n1 from the new EFI partition, but grub data from the old one.
<jmr2>
Even considering that deleting partitions changed the GPT indexes, I don't see how that could work.
<jmr2>
Anyway, I cleaned it up, deleted the last old m1n1 stub, and it's back, with a newer stage1 m1n1 and based on a 13.5. stub. I'll check after the next MacOS update if it helped.

amw: backtrace is not show because you do not have the package with debug symbols installed I guess.
<amw>
Hmm only see CONFIG_DRM_ASAHI=y in my 6.3 kernel???
<PaulFertser>
Was it really your aim to just use fbdev for everything, without any hw acceleration at all, fully software, when there is a stable kernel driver and Mesa support?
<amw>
I
<amw>
I'm not bothered with HW acceleration - so perhaps that is why
<amw>
PaulFertser: Thanks - I guess the card0 device is something else - not sure what but it gives me a way in

amw: it should be possible to start X on fbdev without any acceleration, is that the same error when you run Xorg as root?
<janneg>
amw: what files are in /dev/dri/?
<amw>
janneg: In my working kernel only /dev/dri/card0 and by-path
<amw>
PaulFertser: I need to boot up in my not working kernel - do it later
<janneg>
do you have the asahi tag of the working driver?

Hmm - I see on the failing kernel: simple-framebuffer bd58dc000.framebuffer: [drm] *ERROR* could not acquire memory range [??? 0xffff07880629d480-0x2a5000001a7 flags 0x0]: -16
<amw>
janneg: Not sure which particular number you mean - my kernel is vmlinuz-6.4.0-asahi-00514-gbb1ea272fd94
<janneg>
that's asahi-6.4-3 and rules the issue out I had in mind. the kernel tree has tags of the form asahi-$KERNEL_VERSION-$N

amw: do have you apple-dcp messages in the failing kernel?
<amw>
I have uploaded : grep -C3 --color -E 'framebuffer|Linux version|apple-dcp' /var/log/kern.log - as https://paste.debian.net/1296933/
<amw>
No sign of apple-dcp - I have to go off now - but thanks for the help so far

<mort_32>
hmm when installing fedora, the default is to end up with a 1GB /boot, and that quickly fills up with old kernels
mort_32 is now known as mort_
<what>
yeah but like
<what>
i probably should update
<what>
to avoid that thing
<what>
and i have no idea how to
ml| has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<mort_>
my understanding is that the boot problem is entirely Apple's fault and requires a macOS update to fix, and until then the only solution is to never ever touch the refresh rate option in macOS and make sure it always stays on ProMotion
<what>
ok so i should be fine
<what>
considering im using the air
<mort_>
oh, yeah the air is unaffected from what I understand
<what>
ok i should be good
<what>
thanks
<what>
oh yeah one more thing
<what>
bluetooth audio should work
<what>
even though the speakers arent enabled
<mort_>
yea
<what>
ok thanks
<holiday2>
never thought i'd be grateful for having a lower end mac
<holiday2>
no promotion = no problems it seems
<holiday2>
apple should switch to two-year updates and make sure the new version won't break anything, i use macOS for stability and I feel like im using arch sometimes
<mort_>
yeah
<mort_>
the 1 year cycle is harsh

im starting to regret getting this m2 mac
<what>
such a pain in the ass to use 3rd party stuff
<holiday2>
i never had issues with 3rd party apps
<what>
im talking about brew.sh and stuff
<holiday2>
only kernel extensions
<holiday2>
i love my mac
<holiday2>
and specifically its cpu
<what>
anyway im gonna figure out if i can install kde desktop and get rid of gnome
<holiday2>
but the one year update is bleah
<holiday2>
u can
<holiday2>
u could have chosen kde
<holiday2>
at installer
<what>
i screwed up
<what>
and typed 17
<what>
not 15
<holiday2>
reinstall then
<what>
do i really have to wipe the partitions and stuff
<what>
or is there an uninstaller
<what>
cause i really dont feel like fiddling with gparted
<holiday2>
well there is some sort of "uninstaller"
<holiday2>
and after uninstalling it
<holiday2>
you only have to open diskutility
<holiday2>
and delete the partition
<what>
just to get kde??
<holiday2>
no
<ChaosPrincess>
why are you reinstalling just to switch the DE
<holiday2>
but i used it 3 or 4 times without any issue

what: if youre playing with diskutil, always do diskutil list before each command, and double check the partition number
<j`ey>
in some cases they get renumbered after commands
<what>
Seems funky
<what>
I'll probably screw it up
<holiday2>
have you uninstalled asahi before?
<what>
Nope
<holiday2>
damn
<what>
Just installed it yesterday
<what>
And I prefer gnome over kde
<what>
What no
<holiday2>
use the script, then go into disk utility(on macOS), press on the main ssd, and then "partition"
<what>
Ok
<holiday2>
and then select the (now) empty partition
<holiday2>
and click the minus
<holiday2>
under the circle
<holiday2>
and if everything goes well it should be like before installing asahi
<holiday2>
worst case scenario, i hope you have an apple store nearby
<holiday2>
or another mac for restoring
<holiday2>
(hopefully it wont be needed)
<what>
The Uninstaller script worked
<what>
Sick
<holiday2>
good, now lets pray the macOS partition is untouched
<what>
Yup
<what>
Just 2 weird partitions left
<what>
Both apfs
<holiday2>
delete just the big one
<holiday2>
dont delete the recovery
<what>
I did
<holiday2>
ok
<holiday2>
maybe u could delete the other too

what: be very careful with the uninstaller script for the future; I wiped my install by mac terminal zfs giving me a wrong ctrl+r search, so I ran that instead of the installer accidentally once by launching from shell history at a late evening.
<leio>
fortunately happened to notice and cancel fast, so it had only wiped the APFS so far, not the linux itself, and I was able to do a restore of the APFS in some more advanced ways to not need to reinstall linux and do customizations I had spent time on already; if I would have been a couple seconds slower on ctrl+c, then it'd be all gone or at least even harder to restore

Hi All, small question, to keep my system uptodate do i need to do some other tasks than updating my linux distribution ?
<j`ey>
nope
<alain68>
not that i miss some new features because i'm not updating important asahi parts
<alain68>
so the uboot or m1n1 does not need to be update
<j`ey>
those are packaged by the distro
<alain68>
even on ubuntuasahi.org ?
<j`ey>
presumably, but I dont know about that
<j`ey>
you should ask on the #ubuntu-asahi channel for that
<alain68>
ok i'll say its a yes in that case. Worse case scenario i'll check here from time to time and if i see something fixed (for ex thunderbolt or speakers) and if i see no changes on my distro then i'll know ^^
