only now have I realised that Fedora Asahi ships with btrfs by default
<kidplayer666>
does this mean that i could i have saved my system when I managed to delete the bin and etc folders accidentally´

kidplayer666: probably, but i don't know if btrfs automatically takes snapshots
<ydalton>
btw, i can connect on campus now for some reason
<kidplayer666>
ah fun
<kidplayer666>
I had some guy who had a pixel and couldn't connect to eduroam

kidplayer666: It depends how the btrfs file system is mounted if you want a good backup. The best strategy is not to use the root file system in btrfs id 5 (the default) but a subdirectory in it and remounted e.g. via it's name. On a live system you then would see something like
<cy8aer>
Then in id5 there would be a "@rootfs" and tools like btrbk can make subvolumes beside this and are able to create incremental subvolume copies to other btrfs-Devices local (on an external disk) or remote (via btrfs-send/receive). So if the fedora system has some mounts like in the example this would be the best strategy for backups. You can also try snapshoter for e. g. your home directory, if this is a snapshot too.
<cy8aer>
If the homedir is a subvolume, sorry
<cy8aer>
I use this method for years now on my homeservers and it often saved my head...
ydalton has left #asahi [ERC 5.5.0.29.1 (IRC client for GNU Emacs 29.0.92)]
<cy8aer>
If your root filesystem is in btrfs id5 it is possible to move to a subdirectory, but this is very tricky and I would recommend this only for a very new installation because you may kill your fs if you do not know what you do...
<leio>
the btrfs is the way it's been put into the installer image zip; it is just dd'ed to the nvme by the installer

And (if you not used btrfs before) remember: df is not the reality, btrfs f df is (because the snapshots are not seen in df)
<as400>
"btrfs f u" is even more readable

Does anybody get asked by kwallet for their password after opening an application that needs a password? My password is the same as my login password.
<ayke>
I switched to Fedora but kept my ALARM home directory. It used to work fine on ALARM (apparently it got unlocked properly because there are secrets stored in kwallet).

It's better to disable kwallet or gnome-keyring and use Keepassxc instead. Gives you much more control.

<bluetail>
as400 you still need a authentication daemon for applications like gparted, so that you can allow its access as normal user. Otherwise, you may need to run it as sudo
<bluetail>
if u try to run it without sudo or auth provider, you just error out
<as400>
bluetail you might be right. I'm not using such apps so I don't care :)
<as400>
And there is nothing wrong with using sudo, right ? :)
<kidplayer666>
well i just disabled kde wallet and it still asks me my administrator password when I wanna open stuff like Gpartead
<bluetail>
as400 you might be required to set DISPLAY if you run a app as sudo because it could be possible that it doesn't spawn at all
<bluetail>
kidplayer666 yea. kde wallet and authentication provider are two different things
<kidplayer666>
ah ok, sorry
<as400>
bluetail: right.
<ArcaneNibble>
(not having paid any attention to new developments in the past year) what's the current status of 4k pages + GPU?
<i509vcb>
Does the microvm just spawn a sort of wine-like virtual desktop or individual windows?
<i509vcb>
Okay I see
<maz>
j`ey: I use Xpra, but that's definitely not high-performance.
<maz>
(not that I care about performance)
<j`ey>
games people want perf!
<maz>
I don't want games!
<j`ey>
:-)
<j`ey>
maz: are you actually running any asahi non-headless?
<maz>
j`ey: no. but my desktop is a VM running on my M1 that displays on my work laptop.
<maz>
so network transparency is a must in my case.
<maz>
the desktop follows me wherever I go
<j`ey>
why run it in a VM?
<maz>
4k.
<maz>
plus, eat my own dogfood.
<j`ey>
gamer!
<maz>
at the time, emacs didn't work correctly with 16k. so a VM was the right workaround. and it stuck.
<j`ey>
another point against emacs :P
<maz>
it's been fixed since! :D
<j`ey>
:-)
<maz>
more seriously, it is super convenient to be able to snapshot my environment, do all sort of stupid things, and restore it when I break it.

maz: why not apply that principle to the whole OS! Just use Nix (or at least that’s what those people try to convince me off, am in fedora)
