Hi all, i haven't commented here in a while in fact i just rejoined this channel. i have a m1 mbp 16 inch and i would like to run gentoo on it. what is the status ?
<capta1nt0ad>
It basically consists of installing Asahi ALARM Minimal from the regular installer and booting the LiveCD off of the same GRUB menu; the rest is essentially the same as the Handbook.

does asahi get support from fedora? meaning their team got bigger?
<holiday>
or its the same team asking sometimes with support on specific tasks?

Christian Hergert went fedora-asahi for his new main work laptop, that should mean a lot for getting any performance and such things to get tuned well for it :)
<j`ey>
Linus too ;)

hmm i configured hyprland but now apps like VSCodium and webcord have funny text
<holiday>
its like the destkop is 2560x1600 scale 1.4 and the app's text is 480p
<holiday>
nvm not only the text, the whole app
<holiday>
intelliJ idea same
<holiday>
only the firefox has good scaling :(

holiday: it's likely those apps are running in Xwayland
<ydalton>
run xwininfo, and hover over those programs. if your cursor turns into a cross, those are Xwayland apps. if your cursor stays normal, those are native Wayland apps
holiday has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<leio>
wouldn't that be confusing and give false positives when a xwayland window is below a native wayland window?
capta1nt0ad has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<ydalton>
let me try
<leio>
at least for me with another tool (can't remember, I think xdpyinfo), which shows details about a X window, including its icon in ascii art, it would show what's beneath the wayland window if anything X is there
<leio>
and with GNOME it used to be a full screen guard X11 window too
<ydalton>
it doesn't, i put a Xwayland app behind my native Wayland terminal and it said the terminal was native Wayland
<ydalton>
leio: let my try that tool
capta1nt0ad has joined #asahi
<ydalton>
i have no idea what the output of that command means lol
<leio>
basically if nothing Xwayland is below, the click just does nothing
<leio>
Window id can be checked to make sure it isn't displaying something below instead, I guess
dovu has joined #asahi
<leio>
I'm having a hard time testing it myself, as I don't think I have any Xwayland apps in sight :)
<dovu>
hi! with fedora 39 release on tuesday, is it safe to install fedora asahi then? or should you wait some days after that release?
<leio>
yup, xwininfo works good and as you advertised
<leio>
I think that's because it works with mouse position more deeply than the tool I used; I guess my tool was more like "click somewhere and I'll find what X window is in that global coordinate space you clicked at", while xwininfo interacts with exactly what you clicked on, as it also seem to handle mouse enter/leave events in terms of the cursor looks, etc
<holiday>
dovu: im running the beta now and it feels good
<holiday>
ydalton: seems like it might be a bug on hyprland
<holiday>
damn then im stuck with either really small text or bad resolution
<holiday>
wait i might try pumping the res up to 4k or something
<holiday>
and scale down
<ydalton>
except on KDE, Xwayland apps don't properly scale and the result is blurriness
<leio>
intellij stuff tends to be problematic when you have different scale monitors
<leio>
vscode might support wayland native
<ydalton>
that's why i basically only use Wayland native apps
<ydalton>
holiday: did you try xwininfo?
<leio>
intellij is xwayland for sure (unless you knowingly pull in some experimental java things for it to use iirc), their wayland porting is not far enough
<leio>
but worth checking vscodium
<ydalton>
is this wezterm a Wayland native app or Xwayland?
<ydalton>
holiday: this issue you linked looks completely unrelated

<ydalton>
not at all? even with intellij?
<holiday>
wait lemme try intellij
<holiday>
it worked
<holiday>
it becomes a cross
<holiday>
when hovering over intellij
<ydalton>
yes, that means it's Xwayland, so it is working properly
<ydalton>
and the other blurry apps?
<holiday>
probably still Xwayland
<holiday>
yep
<holiday>
armcord xwayland
<ydalton>
so it's no mystery
<holiday>
no way to fix it?
<holiday>
other than using only wayland apps?
holiday2 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<ydalton>
you can at least try to fix electron apps: i remember adding "--ozone-platform=wayland" runs those programs in native Wayland
