<dylanchapell> Does anyone use signal desktop on the Fedora spin? I was using the signal-desktop-arm AUR package but I don't know if there is a fedora alternative

<seb4nih23> there is a flatpak that i found in the GitHub issue

<maxkofler> Hi, does anyone know if DisplayPort MultiStreamTransport will work on asahi or is that a thing the GPU has to implement?
seb4nih0 has joined #asahi
<Illya> can the opengl driver be used to support opengl on macOS too?
<maxkofler> @Illya: Yes I do think so, Alyssa worked on the userspace driver waaayyy before the kernel driver was even started on macOS
<sven> mst will very likely never be supported since that requires hardware and dcp firmware support which these machines don't seem to have

<maxkofler> @sven So it is an Apple thing? I know they don't support it on macOS so I was wondering if that could be something AsahiLinux could make better than Apple
<ar> sven: they don't? iirc one of apple displays, that is still supported, used mst
<ar> (which made the whole issue of them not supporting mst in other cases even funnier)
seb4nih8 has joined #asahi
<Illya> maxkofler: do you have a link to this? I only found the asahi linux ones
<maxkofler> @ar As far as I know they don't support it on macOS
<maxkofler> @Illya Don't quote me on this, I just think to know that Alyssa used to develop the userspace driver on macOS using the macOS kernel driver while the Linux kernel driver wasn't ready yet...
<janneg> Illya: the API on macOS side is unstable so it's not tenable to use the driver for more than reverses engineering on slected macOS versions
<Illya> that's a shame, would have been nice to be able to support opengl properly in macos still, a lot of users won't have the technical ability to install asahi (or aren't able to for various reasons)
<janneg> ar: DP mst and not tiled displays via thunderbolt? as far as I'm aware missed macOS DP MST support even on intel macs
maxkofler has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
maxkofler has joined #asahi
<janneg> Illya: we can't do anything about that and I doubt apple would care if you complain to them
<maxkofler> @janneg Apple doesn't care about OpenGL anymore, they dropped it years ago...
jeisom_ has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<maxkofler> It's quite unfortunate, even compute shaders aren't supported in their version, really bad
<Illya> janneg: yea of course. What makes it unstable though? isn't the gpu silicon the same?
<maxkofler> @Illya There is a UAPI between the kernel and the userspace driver: Graphics drivers are always split like that due to them being quite complex. Linux enforces UAPI backwars compatibility, MacOS not, so the interfaces between the userspace and kernel space driver could (and will) change from one macOS version to the next
<Illya> I see, thank you. Probably time I just swapped to asahi (personally anyway), doing dev work on macos gets worse with every release
<maxkofler> @Illya https://asahilinux.org/2022/11/tales-of-the-m1-gpu/ This article explains it quite well
<sven> ar: / janneg: afaik MST has never been supported on macOS but was supported by the hardware on intel macs
<sven> on the M-series I haven't seen any evidence that suggests MST is support by the HW. it would somehow require muxing two dp streams into a single dp output and that doesn't seem possible
<sven> thunderbolt tunneling is a different story, it's possible to tunnel two separate dcpext streams on a single thunderbolt port
<maxkofler> I was just interested in that because I fell into the giant hole of worms called thundebolt docks and I was wondering if Asahi would support something macOS couldn't
<delsol> sven: thats what the Matrox TripleHead2Go bullshit was all about
<sven> i don't know what that is
<delsol> plug in 2 1080p monitors, the Triplehead2go shows up as single 3840x1080 monitor....
<sven> maxkofler: you can connect two displays to a single thunderbolt dock _if the M-chip supports two external displays_ on macOS already
<delsol> plug in 3 1080p monitors, it shows up as a 5720x1080 display.
<sven> that.. sounds like a big hack :D
<maxkofler> sven: Yes, Isn't that always DisplayLink?
<sven> maxkofler: no, you can tunnel two DP streams over a single thunderbolt port
<sven> M1 pro/max should support that
<delsol> and yes, if you're already at "buying a fancy dock" stage, its at least worth glancing at the Matrox Solutions.
<delsol> sven: they've been doing it since the 1024x768 VGA days...
<maxkofler> Hm, that's interesting because _most_ of them show macOS only working with them mirrored...
<sven> it must be a thunderbolt dock that supports the bandwidth required by those two displays
<sven> there are also usb3/dp-altmode docks which won't support this
<sven> well, "docks"
<delsol> sven: yes, thunderbolt supports that.... but that counts against the M1's display engines.
<sven> delsol: yes ofc
<delsol> whereas a triplehead2go doesn't.

<kraem> on the topic of displaylink+docks: people owning the apple silicon macbooks, are you using them w/o an external display or is displaylink a viable alternative until dp alt mode is implemented?
<delsol> kraem: displaylink is fine for spreadsheets and dashboards
<delsol> displaylink not so good for active display use.
<kraem> i see. the most active thing i do is watching an occasional video. displaylink wouldn't handle that too well then i guess?
<sven> i'm also not sure what the linux driver solution is
<sven> i know there is a driver for older versions but I don't know if there's anything that works with their latest chips
<kraem> wouldn't evdi work?

<ydalton> for people on gnome, have you recently experienced crashes when you lock your screen or let your computer go to sleep? cuz i've had these crashes since the mesa update since yesterday
<ydalton> though i do not think it's a mesa issue
<j`ey> ydalton: been reported
frisvee has joined #asahi
<ydalton> where?
<j`ey> might not be it
<ydalton> i don't think that's the same one, my reports say the crash function is "free"
<ydalton> i reported the bug to upstream and one of the maintainers says it might be a mozjs issue
