[haikuports/haikuports] Begasus df45011 - python-distutils-extra, new recipe (#7007)
<win8linux[m]>
Does the EFI loader receive changes often?
<win8linux[m]>
At least, compared to the rest of haiku?
<andreasdr[m]>
I dont think so.
<andreasdr[m]>
Recently a bug was fixed, but at this area of Haiku not much happens.
<win8linux[m]>
Asking since the latest Haiku nightly doesn't boot even with failsafe video drivers, unless I swap out the EFI files with older ones dated to the 20th of March 2022.
<win8linux[m]>
This is on a desktop system. I've given up on getting the laptop to work again, so i'm focusing on the desktop instead.
<win8linux[m]>
If there aren't many changes to the EFI loader, then it might be possible to quickly narrow down the revisions to test.
<andreasdr[m]>
Damn.

<andreasdr[m]>
On my machines the newest loader boots.
<andreasdr[m]>
Testing on a big desktop machine and a new laptop.
<andreasdr[m]>
The older one did not boot on my desktop machine. But BETA3 loader did.
thomaslewis has left #haiku [#haiku]
<win8linux[m]>
Same here, actually. Beta 3 works just fine on both the desktop and laptop.

I installed a nightly after B3 on the desktop and have been updating it since.
<win8linux[m]>
I might try that on a flash drive with the laptop.

Currently attempting to compile f3 on Haiku, but building stops with errors about a missing "argp.h" header:

win8linux[m], was mostly concerned about linux-headers ;)
<win8linux[m]>
Those are Linux-only, although the maintainer does welcome port patches.
<Begasus>
go for it ;)
<win8linux[m]>
Apparently those are Linux-only, mainly since drive passthrough is difficult on Windows and Mac.
<Begasus>
someone should follow up on old issues at haikuports, checked out a build for latest agar to see there is already one in the tree ;)
<win8linux[m]>
I've no idea regarding Haiku internals, knowledge of which would be required to port the extra f3 utilities.

x512[m]: that's ttcoder (TuneTracker developer)'s project to run Haiku kits on Genode
<x512[m]>
What was the problem with regular Haiku?
<waddlesplash>
they didn't find hardware that "worked"
<waddlesplash>
they had a number of very bad issues for years which they never reported, or rather some they did but then failed to communicate about
<waddlesplash>
all those are now to my knowledge fixed
<waddlesplash>
another set of problems was due to them trying to run on AMD FX processors, I pointed out that issue and they switched to more reliable hardware
<waddlesplash>
they also were changing BIOS settings unnecessarily which was causing more issues
<x512[m]>
I find new hardware that work quite easily...
<waddlesplash>
here's a post where they asked about compatibility, we replied with the few known issues but pointed out some that work
<waddlesplash>
x512[m]: so do I, and most other developers (PulkoMandy in fact has a new 11th gen laptop that wokrs great, though I think the touchpad doesn't work yet) -- but TuneTracker care about desktops so i2c is mostly irrelevant
<waddlesplash>
I guess I'm just a bit lost on their proceedings

what kind of issues can I expect?
<waddlesplash>
basically everything from AMD Bulldozer to (but NOT including) AMD Zen processors have severe issues that are still unsolved under Haiku
<ermo[m]>
ouch
<waddlesplash>
random spontaneous resets and hardlocks
<waddlesplash>
are most of the issues
<ermo[m]>
ouch ouch ouch
<waddlesplash>
there is a very long running ticket where many things were tried to diagnose the problem and none succeeded
<ermo[m]>
Hrm. OK. Cheers for the heads up.
<ermo[m]>
On a scale from 1-10, where 1 is not at all, and 10 is "imma kill you with a wooden spoon right this instant, fella", how annoyed would you be if I tried and then reported issues (if any arise)?
