Hello everybody! I installed haiku beta 4 and pkgman says: couldn't update repository 'Haiku' server not found. Why does it happen? Regards, LinuxUserHaiku

question, I am trying to use a semaphore on the driver I am making and I cannot seem to get it to work quite right. I thought I had the code (https://review.haiku-os.org/c/haiku/+/6608/7/src/add-ons/kernel/drivers/network/tun/driver.cpp) for the read function of the driver setup but it is still treated as non-blocking so I am wondering what went wrong with my implementation here ->

nielx[m], in regards on the system not finding the USB install on a fresh installed image, I got the same thing here, had to plug it in on another laptop so I could boot into the Desktop (Try out Haiku in the first welcome screen), after that the usb booted on this laptop

@Begasus hi
<Begasus>
hi LinuxUser
<LinuxUser>
Oh i'm glad to see you. I have problem with haiku main repo
<LinuxUser>
@Begasus when i try to install anything pkgman says: couldn't update repository 'Haiku' server not found
<LinuxUser>
But if I try to "wget" repo's url response goes
<Begasus>
since you are running Vision I presume your network is ok
<Begasus>
didn't change anything to the repo url?
<LinuxUser>
no
<LinuxUser>
i tried to readd url but error same
<Begasus>
can't tell then, maybe ask around at the forum? (this is a fresh install too and things work fine so far)
<LinuxUser>
yes i checked only one repo(haikuports)
<Begasus>
weird
<Begasus>
maybe someone is blocking you for that access?
<LinuxUser>
hmm who? ISP?!
<Begasus>
could be?
<Begasus>
in the dark here ...
<LinuxUser>
i entered repo url on my tablet following output:Route { branch: "r1beta4", arch: "x86_64", version: "r1~beta4_hrev56578_86", path: "r1beta4/x86_64/r1~beta4_hrev56578_86" }

Wanted to use Haiku as a daily driver
<HaikuUser>
I'm web developer and I wanted to use Haiku as a daily driver. I mostly deal with api development using aws.
<HaikuUser>
My concern was safety and backdoors etc..
<HaikuUser>
I came across this project called AntiVirus a python based program. Developed by cookie0 and Len-Stevens

Backdoors in Haiku?

...or using Haiku to avoid backdoored software?

Thats a good question

My understanding of the world is that one needs to be quite special to have backdoored software as a real threat.

As for running Haiku as a daily driver, go for it! Seems like a good enough idea. I'd say it's no less secure than the alternatives in practise. Typical Linux distributions and Windos alike are setup to allow sudo without re-authenticating anyways.
<HaikuUser>
oh ok i see
<|cos|>
One big blocker for putting Haiku on hardware that leaves my apartment is the lack of encrypted filesystems. I hate the idea of forgetting a laptop on a train, and not having the need to replace the hardware being the biggest issue.

Maybe I should rephrase that as a question. Is there any convenient way to make the home directory encrypted on Haiku? My searches gave that full disk encryption is a non-starter.
<HaikuUser>
I don't think linux filesystems are encrypted by default
<erysdren>
Haiku uses the BeFS file system, not ext
<HaikuUser>
I know but again encryption is an option for other os's but not haiku right?
<|cos|>
On Linux one typically creates a LUKS layer between the first layer partitioning and the filesystems.
jason123santa has left #haiku [Error from remote client]
<augiedoggie>
the only disk encryption for haiku that i'm aware of is the one axeld wrote
<augiedoggie>
it's not full disk, and i don't think you'd be able to encrypt your home dir
<|cos|>
augiedoggie: Thanks! I found that one, realized it hasn't seen any activity for quite a while and kind of assumed it's not too widely used.
<augiedoggie>
eh, i wouldn't call 8 months "quite a while"
<HaikuUser>
Maybe i need to study on the file system again.
<HaikuUser>
I didn't break my install yet but I have to add --user when using pip to install python modules
<HaikuUser>
To be honest I don't know why I started messing with python on haiku
<augiedoggie>
i thought OscarL and Begasus had those problems fixed
<augiedoggie>
have you updated the installed packages?
<|cos|>
augiedoggie: You're absolutely right! I must have misread that somehow. Got the impression the repo was stale since creation, but it seems I'm having flawed perception. Thanks!

Chromebook keyboard is a PS2 keyboard but needs a few remaps like Super+right needs to remap to end and multimedia key to F<number>. What's the best way to implement it? A config option or somehow to detect Chromebook? Driver-level remapping or something more high level?
