<artun> Can someone explain to me what of those things destroyed my Asahi Linux? 1 - complete wipe-out and reinstall of macOS (13.5 to 13.5); 2 - installation of macOS 14 (13.5 to 14.0)? I didn't boot to Asahi since reinstallation and can't confirm whether first or second actions of macOS destroyed my Linux. It's also marked as free space in the installer of Asahi.

<Retr0id> re: weird pixel lines being a known issue when using fractional scaling - for this purpose, does 200% count as fractional scaling?
<jannau> Retr0id: no
<Retr0id> good to know. I haven't seen any for a while actually, but never bothered reporting in the past because I wasn't sure if it was in the known-issue bucket or not (although I also never found anything 100% reproducible)

<as400> chadmed: and what is yours ? Compared to previous kernel without deep idle ?
chadmed has joined #asahi
<chadmed> as400: i get about 6 hours worth of 1080p youtube
<chadmed> well, its more like 4.5-5 if im moving the mouse around, those trackpad interrupts are a nuisance
<chadmed> ive got EAS patched in to the DTs in my kernel though so im just curious as to how it compares with deep idle just by itself
<as400> EAS ?
<chadmed> energy-aware scheduling
<chadmed> it optimises scheduling decisions for instructions per joule while still trying to give interactive tasks the performance they need
<as400> heh - I wasn't even aware thing like that exist in Linux. Or is it hardware driven ?
<chadmed> its part of the linux energy model and scheduler
<chadmed> intel does some hardware scheduling on their heterogeneous socs though
<chadmed> but basically the result is that the pcores barely ever wake up if im just bumming around on the desktop
<as400> ok - in this case comparison between deep-idle by itself and deep-idle supported by EAS is indeed interesting.

<r0ni> hrm, can't think of anything i'm in need of... maybe an updated initramfs from arch so i can update my hacked to sh*t OS without a lot of pain ;)
<r0ni> or a MBA m1 would be nice as well
<SinSinati5> Im thinking about buying the m2 to isntall asahi only on it
<SinSinati5> maybe in the next few months
<SinSinati5> do you think asahi will work in the future for all the stuff?
<r0ni> i'm debating on overwriting my asahi-slackware install with crux-arm (which i've been working on) but maybe i'll just keep a chroot for building apps for my pbp
<r0ni> and sure, i'm sure given time (and money) asahi will get to all the devices
<SinSinati5> I hope so
<SinSinati5> I really want arch on mac
<SinSinati5> Im confused is this based on arch or arch itself implemented differently?
<r0ni> the distro they ship the non-upstreamed work on is arch linux ARM
<r0ni> it's arch, but messier
<SinSinati5> ok thnx
<r0ni> currently asahi=arch (for the most part) [and unless you're hacker-3l337] other OSes can be used

piroko_ is now known as piroko
<piroko> so I notice that my macbook pro runs significantly cooler with the new cpuidle driver, which is awesome. does this mean that suspend is on-par with stock MacOS now too? or should I still be shutting down
nickchan has joined #asahi
baozich has joined #asahi
<marcan> It's better but not on par
<piroko> alright
<marcan> please do try it though
<piroko> yeah I'll try it tonight to see how it drains
<piroko> I tried to do it last night but forgot to change the plasma energy saving lid close setting from "sleep display" to "suspend"
bps2 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<piroko> so it drained from 100% down to ~25% overnight hehe
<marcan> heh yeah
<marcan> is this a pro/max soc?
<marcan> on pro/max we also have an extra special suspend driver that makes it save even more power in suspend
<marcan> on base model socs, we don't, so you only get inherent power savings from a few regular devices powering down (mostly wifi I think)
<marcan> over just leaving the machine idle with 0% CPU usage and screen off
<piroko> m1 pro
<marcan> but cpu deep idle will help in all cases/socs

<dottedmag> pipppero: By itself newer version of OpenGL does not mean that: it only means that more extensions are available, so unless electron/chrome/plasma have checks for 3.1 extensions and less performant fallbacks when these are not available nothing changes.

<r0ni> anyone around here happen to have any luck compiling kernels that work in vmware fusion? I can't get any kernel but debians to work in any VMs, and it drives me crazy (not asahi kernels, just any aarch64 distro)
Mpower has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<zzywysm> r0ni: yes, i've done so, but i'm still running VMware Fusion 11.5.7
<zzywysm> r0ni: i have not played with VMware Fusion on aarch64, on my Apple Silicon Mac i use UTM instead of VMware
<r0ni> i'm running 13.0.2 on a M1. every kernel i build and if I try and run os-prober, it finds and "adds" the boot option, but then it refuses to boot and disappears from grub
<zzywysm> if you want to send me the kernelconfig that's failing via pastebin or something, i can take a look
<r0ni> ya i can boot anything on Intel vmware, but Fusion arm I just can't get anywhere
<j`ey> r0ni: what kernel version?
<j`ey> because.. /me finds link
<r0ni> j`ey i know about that issue, i've built the latest 6.1, 5.15, anything... vmware has fixed that issue though
<j`ey> ah ok
<r0ni> they did that before the official release of fusion on M1
<r0ni> i generally never have luck with utm either, but i should try this one i just made in it

<mps> is it kernel config issue
<mps> kernel is asahi-wip 6.3-7
<j`ey> ah
<j`ey> you need to update macOS
<mps> omg
<mps> is it safe to update it? fear that I could lost linux
<j`ey> since it uses a newer SMC feature
<j`ey> 'New firmware-based battery charge control, which offers fixed a 75%/80% threshold setting. To use this, you need to update your system firmware to at least version 13.0, which you can do by simply updating your macOS partition to at least that version or newer. This new charge control method also works in sleep mode.'
<mps> which macos version is needed for this to work?
<mps> ah 13.0
<mps> stub partition doesn't need upgrade? or it needs?
<j`ey> nope, smc is part of the global system fw
<mps> ah fine. I guess then I don't need firmware upgrade on linux
<mps> j`ey: many thanks
