anybody know of a good memtester for apple silicon? macos or linux is fine. i'm getting just random weird corruption in my system...
<tpw_rules>
(anybody even heard of an apple silicon machine with bad ram?)
<nicolas17>
on x86_64 PC I literally used "memtester", runs on Linux userspace, of course it can't test *everything* like memtest86 can, but...
<nicolas17>
you tell it how much memory you want it to test

if you give it too big a number then you swap-thrash to death
<tpw_rules>
it can't determine that intelligently?
<nicolas17>
if it fails to allocate, it will try something smaller
<nicolas17>
if you have swap, it won't "fail"...
<nicolas17>
but it will push everything *else* into swap and that may or may not be what you want

<Guest4474>
does Apple Diagnostics run a memory test?
<tpw_rules>
i thought that was like an apple only thing
<Guest4474>
press command-D in the hold-power-button startup menu allegedly
<tpw_rules>
hm, i might give that a try just for fun
<Guest4474>
*press and hold
<nicolas17>
"Press and hold the Power button until the display shows Loading Startup Options, then release it. Once the Startup Options screen appears, press and hold the Command and D keys until your Mac restarts and the Diagnostics Loader menu appears in the main menu bar."

tried that and memtester and both say memory is okay
<tpw_rules>
the diagnostic apple thing did say there might be an issue with my "power port". i wonder if it's unhappy about al dente
<tpw_rules>
and i guess maybe the memory thing is just a coincidence...
<tpw_rules>
the webpage the diagnostic thing links to has codes for memory failure so presumably it does some basic tests

tpw_rules: I tried the diagnostic tool out of curiosity and it also said there was an issue with the power port... I tried again with the charger *plugged in* and the error went away
<nicolas17>
I think it just assumes you'll run the tests plugged to power
<nicolas17>
or the trained Apple Store person will
<tpw_rules>
hm

oh also, on my desktop PC I noticed memtester gave errors at a consistent address, but if I rebooted, that address changed, or sometimes it found no errors at all, I suspect some ASLR was going on and sometimes the bad memory ended up in use by the kernel or something, so it couldn't get tested, and rebooting shuffled it around
<nicolas17>
so rebooting and running memtester again might work on a different subset of memory
