so, regarding my yesterday's question re: does opengl 3.1 also brings perf improvement... apparently yes? elk.zone used to be sluggish in firefox, now it's buttery smooth
<pipppero>
wezterm now isn't able to start with the webgpu backend, but the default opengl one is *much* faster than before, i'd say as fast as macos
<chadmed>
your firefox might have still been falling back to sw rendering
<pipppero>
huh, might be
<pipppero>
admittedly i didn't fiddle with any hidden setthings
<pipppero>

about:support says it's under webrender now, which is what i need under wayland
<pipppero>
i'll be moving my foss dev stuff on the asahi partition now, happy to dogfood more

does anyone know why gnome with fractional scaling enables shows the options 100%, 125%, 125% and 200%? Does it smell like a gnome bug or a graphics driver thing
jjido has joined #asahi
<waldi>
using gnome-shell 1:44.1-3 on the edge kernel, just upgraded: works for me
<mort_>
44.1 on 6.3.0-asahi-7-1-edge-ARCH here too
<mort_>
I did set the kernel parameter to enable the whole screen though, maybe gnome gets confused by the weird resolution?

Since the last graphics driver update, I have been experiencing instability in firefox. Once or twice a day it will crash and close all my windows. Twice now it has also had a graphical freakout where I get pink/black/multicolor blocks in random parts of the window and a general scrambling of the screen. Is this an issue that other people have been experiencing?
<dylanchapell>
Should I submit a driver bug report? Could it be something else? I also have done the process to enable widevine so it could be related to that
<mort_>
it doesn't explain why 150% scaling isn't an option or why 125% is listed twice :p
<cy8aer>
Oh, I see. Yes I needed to adjust some stuff to get it right with the notch. At the same document is a section "Sizing of HidPi". With the notch switched on "/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/99_hidpi.gschema.overrid" alone does the trick for the desktop, I think.
<cy8aer>
Switching between Notch and not Notch needs a complete readjusting.
<mort_>
I don't care about the notch, the notch is not the problem
<mort_>
the problem is the lack of a 150% dpi scaling option in settings
<waldi>
so you checked that this option is not the problem?
r0ni has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<cy8aer>
So you already have fractional scaling switched on? (otherwise you would not have 125%)
<mort_>
I have fractional scaling turned on yes
<cy8aer>
I am running Gnome 42. Let me look for the scaling parameter if I have 150%...
<cy8aer>
Ah, I see your problem I do have the same problem: 125% twice.
<cy8aer>
Never looked at this because I use 125%. Crazy.
<rinOfTheStars>
heyo, not really sure where else to post this since #asahi-gpu is for development stuff and not... uh, observations about the driver's performance? like this isn't really a support question or anything, just something i've noticed that's interesting as of the recent improvements
<rinOfTheStars>
the gist of it is, there's an odd regression(?) that occurs due to something that changed in the minecraft codebase renderer-wise inbetween versions 1.8.x and 1.9.x, best shown by some screenshots I took of the fps graph
<rinOfTheStars>
not sure if I've heard of something like this happening with other drivers for other hardware in the past when it comes to these two versions, but I'll have to look into it to see; very possible this has happened elsewhere at some point
<rinOfTheStars>
(as an aside: would this be a sensible thing to make a bug report for on the mesa git repo?)

<dylanchapell>
Check out the bug reporting guidelines for the GPU drivers: https://asahilinux.org/2022/12/gpu-drivers-now-in-asahi-linux/ which say that issues should be opened for software in the arch arm repo, so they might not accept a report about Minecraft as it isn't expoected to be supported
