<kallisti5[m]> So... What do y'all want:
<kallisti5[m]> a) Haiku R1/beta3 to be an iso
<kallisti5[m]> b) Haiku R1/beta3 to be ziped into a zip file
<kallisti5[m]> I heard some pushback of people wanting a last release... so asking while we can change it :-)
<kallisti5[m]> the zip saves around 19MiB

<Not-5835> [haiku/infrastructure] kallisti5 65b8c9c - concourse: Drop zip for official releases
<julicenri> If zstd was more widespread, then that could be used for compression instead.
<julicenri> That is, if file size is such an important factor.
<jezek2> yeah the zip was a bit unfortunate, couldn't seed the torrent because I needed the space taken by the zips, also it's better to have official hashes for the .iso itself than the zip too :)
<AlwaysLivid> yeah, that's exactly one of the things i brought up to kallisti5[m]
<AlwaysLivid> if the goal is to head a bit closer towards reproducible builds, getting rid of zip's is an obvious step
<AlwaysLivid> although less important compared to other stuff that needs to be done
<AlwaysLivid> alongside other things such as it being very much annoying.

<B2IA> (AGMS) Have the BeShare to IRC bridge for that, AlwaysLivid.
Begasus has joined #haiku
<Begasus> 'lo peeps
<AlwaysLivid> B2IA/AGMS, is it possible to add more of Haiku's channels to BeShare? I haven't managed to ever use it, simply because I haven't been able to find a proper working version ofr it in all honesty.
<B2IA> (AGMS) Yes, that's one thing we should do - update the HaikuPorts BeShare to be a working version.
<AlwaysLivid> Do you have a link to a working copy of the source code in the public internet?
<B2IA> (AGMS) Hmmm, could monitor more IRC channels to the BeShare bridge easily enough, but would do that one way (otherwise would spam multiple IRC channels).
<B2IA> (AGMS) Latest BeShare is on my server, http://web.ncf.ca/au829/BeOS/BeShare_3.04.zip
<AlwaysLivid> That's useful, we were looking for that.
<AlwaysLivid> I'll open an issue on GitHub about it and see if I have the time to get it done.
<B2IA> (AGMS) The trick is to not update to the lastest Muscle library, breaks compatibility.
<B2IA> (AGMS) Also the source still compiles on ALL versions of BeOS and Haiku.
<Begasus> Isn't it possible to update the BeShare version at haikuports?
<B2IA> (AGMS) Just takes a bit of time.
<B2IA> (AGMS) Just have to make a recipe that invokes the makefile I suspect.
<Begasus> Would be nice if it would be available default for all haiku users
<AlwaysLivid> Opened an issue on GitHub: https://github.com/haikuports/haikuports/issues/6012
<Begasus> (not that I use it that much anymore) but still, it's one we should try to keep alive :)
<B2IA> (AGMS) Yup, was a big part of early BeOS.
<Begasus> We are all familiar as (old) BeOS users with the 'binky's' ;)
<Begasus> Had some serieus fun back then with it, and I think I'm not alone there
<AlwaysLivid> Begasus, are you familiar with my next big plan for HaikuPorts?
<AlwaysLivid> So... code.google.com repositories... there's an archive for all of them!
<Begasus> I'm not able to keep track on your plans AlwaysLivid ;)
<AlwaysLivid> No worries, it's just that there's this place on the internet called the Software Heritage! And they archive software and everything so that it's not lost forever!
<Begasus> I'ts a lot bigger then my todo/whishlist here ;)
<AlwaysLivid> They're pretty cool and I was told that Guix does the exact same thing.
<Begasus> There is another one that can find some older archives, can't remember the name though
<AlwaysLivid> software heritage is supported by unesco apparently btw
odnes has joined #haiku
<AlwaysLivid> they have some decent tools on parsing repositories as well
<AlwaysLivid> ... should check them out in detail later on
<Begasus> I think there are more prominant issues atm that could have a look into?
<AlwaysLivid> yeah true
<AlwaysLivid> but these recipes have been neglected for a decade so
<AlwaysLivid> simple copy and paste job
<Begasus> At least R1B3 is around the corner, so best not make to many plans for now (or reserve them for later)
<Begasus> A decade ago we used "bep" files ;)
<AlwaysLivid> i'm young, everything feels like a decade and very old to me
<AlwaysLivid> but good piece of trivia
<Begasus> the ones remaining at haikuports have been cleened for those
<Begasus> heh
<AlwaysLivid> i'm just trying to work around stuff on haiku without following the approach of pausing everything until the release is done, lots of other people are preoccupied with that :)
<AlwaysLivid> i already did most of the things i wanted to do before the release would go through a month ago and stuff, time to work on more things

<cocobean> nephele: "I tested GLTeapot with Haiku hrev55145 x86_64 w/Mesa 17.1.10."... did you test vthe viewport with previous Mesa releases? Working on BeOS R5/Zeta 1.2+ ?
<nephele[m]> The ticket is about mesa21 cocobean
<nephele[m]> ... why would i test BeOS?
<cocobean> What worked beforehand?
<nephele[m]> GlTeapot
<cocobean> So it worked properly on R1B1 and/or R1B2?
<nephele[m]> It works properly with the currentntly packaged mesa, the info is in the ticket
<nephele[m]> (and the cause is also described there)
<cocobean> Odd, I tested with with R1B2 w/Mesa 17... reproduced your issue.
Anarchos has joined #haiku
<nephele[m]> As in with 17 you get the same behaviour as i got with 21?
<Anarchos> why do jam recompiles the whole kernel if i only modify a driver source file ?
<cocobean> Oh.... now I see why I missed this before... I tested withthe VESA driver and reproduced the issue there with Mesa 17.
<kallisti5[m]> Haiku R1/beta3 test candidate image
<Forza> Cool kallisti5
<kallisti5[m]> Please perform testing if you have some free time, and provide feedback! :-) (the README.md documents how to submit bugs)
<cocobean> Using the nvidia driver, all color ranges PASSED with Mesa 17. No viewport issues.
<nephele[m]> cocobean: I use the radeom driver
<nephele[m]> I cant use 32bit because of a differemt issue
<nephele[m]> would be nice if you can add the info that it is broken on 17 with vesa :)
<cocobean> OK

<cocobean> nephele: I'll test this with the intel driver as well.
<Forza> kallisti5: ipfs. That is also very cool and progressive!
<kallisti5[m]> Just trying to save us bandwidth :-)

<Forza> Yea. Hows th3 web thing frontend set up ?
<kallisti5[m]> I have a nginx reverse proxy in front of the ipfs gateway to keep people using it for non-Haiku stuff :-)
<kallisti5[m]> there are also some rewrites to correct the ipns addresses
<Forza> It means that the nginx still takes the bandwidth hit?
Vidrep_64 has joined #haiku
<kallisti5[m]> the gateway is running ipfs
<Vidrep_64> Hi
<kallisti5[m]> so nginx is just a revere proxy to protect the local ipfs node :-)
<Vidrep_64> I did the pkg repo change...all is working normally so far
Anarchos has joined #haiku
<Forza> kallisti5: but my http client doesn't speak ipfs so that connection is still single point, isn't it?
<kallisti5[m]> no. So at least 3 ipfs nodes are serving this content
<kallisti5[m]> you can access it on any gateway.. local or a public one
<kallisti5[m]> for example: cloudflare-ipfs.com/ipns/hpkg.haiku-os.org
<Forza> Aha! Well done :)
<kallisti5[m]> so.. yes de.hpkg.haiku-os.org is a point of failure, but you can use any gateway in any region to access the data (keeping in mind... still only a few nodes pinning haiku's repos atm)
jmairboeck has joined #haiku
<kallisti5[m]> If you run ipfs, you can help out by following these instructions to mirror our repos: https://github.com/haiku/infrastructure/blob/master/docs/ipfs/ipfs-pinning.md

<Forza> Will/would that replace normal http mirror like mine? https://mirrors.tnonline.net/?dir=haiku
<kallisti5[m]> it would in theory.. ipfs does dedup as well (and will work with dynamic ip addresses)
<Forza> I'll look into it :) but not today
<Anarchos> is it safe to use strcpy in a drivr?
<Anarchos> i got kdl while using it

<cocobean> Nvidia driver caused GLTeapot to crash at 8 bits/pixel only.

<Forza> kallisti5: you mentioned that I shouldn't run ipfs with gc enabled. Why is that?
<kallisti5[m]> with GC enabled, if your "pinning" of our repos (all 93GiB worth) fails, it will garbage collect them and you have to re-download everything
<kallisti5[m]> i learned that the hard way :-)
<Forza> Ouch
<kallisti5[m]> with GC disabled, your node will "hold on" to what it downloaded so far, and will resume
<Forza> Also a typo
<Forza> "ipfs pin --progress /ipns/hpkg.haiku-os.org" should be "ipfs pin add --progress /ipns/hpkg.haiku-os.org"
<kallisti5[m]> ow. you're correct

Huggy has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<ScottPuopolo> bbjimmy_mobile: will /boot/home/config/packages work for a location that will exclude from up or down grading?
<B2IA> (AGMS) Yes, ScottPuopolo, that is for personal packages. /boot/system/packages gets wiped out when doing a reinstall, but /boot/home/config/packages is kept. If using pkgman to install, you can specify that place with "pkgman install --home somepackage" rather than the default --system.
<ScottPuopolo> AGMS: good to know about the flags for pkgman install, didn't see that in the help for pkgman in terminal.
<B2IA> (AGMS) ScottPuopolo, it's in the tricky second level help. "pkgman install --help""
<ScottPuopolo> AGMS: yes, thanks! I was just reading that myself.
<B2IA> (AGMS) Well, almost have the new BeShare recipe for HaikuPorts working, just need to get the post-install script into the package.
