<roiredX> good day
<roiredX> well... looks like moving an usb hd with haiku to different systems with different screen resolutions...
<roiredX> mmmmm....
<roiredX> I presume WebPositive is rendering outside the display size
<roiredX> as when it launches doesn't show on the screen
<roiredX> but is up
<roiredX> it seems that WebPositive is launching at its last screen location
<roiredX> but as this display is smaller, it's outside of the display boundaries
<roiredX> that's the only explanation I can find
<nielx[m]> sounds about right
<roiredX> so, nielx[m], the question is, how to get it back?
<roiredX> I mean back within screen boundaries
<roiredX> also, the workspaces applet didn't scale

<roiredX> full screen width, not window
<nielx[m]> You can either toggle full screen mode using a key combo and use it in full screen, though that would obviously mean that once you leave full screen that it will move off screen again. The alternative is for you to close webpositive, delete the settings file and open it again. It should find a sensible position then.
<nielx[m]> I am not aware of a keyboard shortcut that centers a window on the current screen
<roiredX> so there's room for improvement there
<roiredX> launching apps should scale to display size
<roiredX> also, add a 'shrink to fit' the background in the backgrounds preferences
<roiredX> bye all

<Begasus> when booting the live version (no install) and firing up the Install program there are a few glitches also (some paragraphs not translated)
<bbjimmy> There is no documentation on what these identifiers for tickets mean.
<nephele[x]> you mean milestones and version?
Guest795 has quit [Ping timeout: 481 seconds]
<bbjimmy> indeed
<nephele[x]> version is the version the issue occurs on, if it's nightly it is r1/development normally, milestone is for when it is scheduled to be fixed, but you normally dont need to set one explicitly, but sometimes it is nice
<nephele[x]> in this case it is a bit strange that you basically set a milestone for something in the past :P
<nephele[x]> (although it is valid for occuring on beta3 aswell, just doesn't quite match the version you said to have)
<bbjimmy> I'm still confused, i am on a pre beta 3 version of haiku as beta3 is not yet released, therefore im on beta2 no?
<nephele[x]> You are on the nightly ahead of beta3
<nephele[x]> beta3 was branched already
<nephele[x]> Pulkomandy: I can't get emoji to show up in FontDemo, but it does allocate space for them, so this might indicate the glyphs are found, have been calculated for the sizing (and maybe fix the spacing issues then) but are not currently rendered correctly
<nephele[x]> I can get them to show up in CharacterMap though ... huh
<nephele[x]> Actually, copying those to fontdemo works too, so, i guess fallbacks are broken somehow, but the font works :g
<nephele[x]> Might check that out later :)
_Dario_ has quit [Quit: Vision[0.10.3]: i've been blurred!]
<PulkoMandy> maybe I'm just using the wrong name for the font, or maybe there's something more strange happening
<nephele[x]> would be nice to extract the "garbled github text" into a string that is more easily debuggable
<nephele[x]> Currently i'm more testing beta3 though, and your change is on nightly so bit later :)

<cocobean> The WebPositive 612.1.x build issue was spotted and reported on 20 days ago - https://github.com/haikuports/haikuports/issues/5978 - so it is known.
<cocobean> Same build works on x86.
rodolphoeck has joined #haiku
<nephele[x]> I knew about this issue for about 2 months cocobean
<cocobean> Any resaolution yet?
<nephele[x]> Well no, the core issue is that a test for STD_EXPERIMENTAL_FILESYSTEM fails because gcc fails to link something and asks to recompile with -fPIC
<nephele[x]> you can check the mailing list, i posted in more detail there
<cocobean> Ok... mine shows STD_*_FILESYSTEM as 'available' during configure.... yours the same?
<nephele[x]> No, STD_FILESYSTEM_IS_AVAILABLE - Failed and STD_EXPERIMENTAL_FILESYSTEM_IS_AVAILABLE - Failed
<nephele[x]> the first one should fail for our GCC version, the second one should suceed
<nephele[x]> Why did you open the ticket on haikuports and not on trac? opening it on github (in haikuports) pretty much makes sure I don't see it :/
<cocobean> Ah.... my build shows it passing on both of those tests... I'm retesting it on hrev55201 now....
<nephele[x]> Are you using a different GCC?
<nephele[x]> 8.3 doesn't support std::Filesystem in "normal" mode, only experimental, so i don't see how this would work for you otherwise
<cocobean> There were a few recipes having problems between various x86/x64 builds... hmmm.
<cocobean> The Webkit build works on x86... just not x86_64 (GCC 8.3 used on both platforms).
<nephele[x]> Yes, I am aware
<nephele[x]> I am only trying to debug amd64, not much point to debug a working build :P
<cocobean> heh
<nephele[x]> anyway, i could be wrong and gcc 8 supports it normally too, but in any case it's not really the core issue, it's just a symptom of something else i think
<nielx[m]> nephele[x] : is it that the experimental fs library itself needs to be recompiled with fPic?
<nephele[x]> nielx: could be, how would i verify this?
<nephele[x]> I assume it's build with gcc or so?
<nielx[m]> it should be, I will have a look in a bit
<nephele[x]> Argh, i hate find syntax, why does it have to be so horrible
<nephele[x]> I would be much quicker finding gcc maually than figuring out which voodoo incarnation find will accept to not search a depth of 50
<nephele[x]> sys-devel/gcc ; somehow " ls * | rg -C 50 gcc" was much easier than find, ugh
<nephele[x]> nielx: looks to be build with gcc indeed
<nielx[m]> the reason could be that gcc does not compile static libraries with fpic by default
<nielx[m]> because it is not necessary when you link it into executables
mmu_man has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<nielx[m]> but I suppose it is actually being used in a library
<Begasus> OK, updated some of the remaining Dutch translations, could you take care of the one for cortex nielx[m] ;)
<Begasus> only 840 to go there :P
<nephele[x]> nielx: yeah, webkit is build as a lib
<nielx[m]> @bega
<nielx[m]> Begasus_:
<nielx[m]> fine i will do cortex
<nielx[m]> :-P
<nephele[x]> Hmm, if the problem is std fs not beeing pic, why is this only a problem on 64bit? :3
tuaris has joined #haiku
<nielx[m]> I have had issues with pic versus non-pic in the past
<nielx[m]> I remember I had to patch things out in rust as well
<nephele[x]> Anyway, if you have experience with gcc and want to take a shot at it, go ahead :)
<nephele[x]> for webkit you don't even need to build it to figure out if it had an impact, only doing the project config is enough... though you still need to clone it for that
<nielx[m]> well it looks like you need to rebuild the gcc package with the --with-pic flag to configure
<nephele[x]> that sounds easy enough, i shall try
<Begasus> stackoverflow to the resque! ;)
<nephele[x]> Let's see how fast my cpu can be yeeah :D
<Begasus> (saved me a couple of times in the past also) :)
<nielx[m]> there's a general question around PIC and PIE. I don't fully understand it, but I do know that for Rust on x86_64 I have to explicitly enable position independent executables
<PulkoMandy> on x86_64 PIC and PIE are the same I think. On some other architectures (ppc, possibly sparc) they do a bit different things and there is also PIE vs pie and PIC vs pic to make things even more fun
<nielx[m]> I recall chosing not to try to understand that :-P
<nephele[x]> is the gold linker disabled on purpose?
<nephele[x]> atleast, it isnt enabled, and webkits build sais it's not there
<nephele[x]> (isnt explicitly enabled)
<nielx[m]> I think it is opt-in
<nephele[x]> I'll report back once gcc has build and i had a chance to test it with webkit
<cocobean> ;) +1
<Begasus> wee!!! got haikuporter back! :D

<PulkoMandy> c++filt can translate the mangled symbol name to a readable one, and it appears to be part of std::string
<PulkoMandy> do we still have libsupc++ as a separate lib? I thought we had merged it into libstdc++?
Maturion has joined #haiku
<PulkoMandy> or maybe did we keep something for compatibility with old apps? Is it just a link to libstdc++?
<PulkoMandy> anyway, your problem is not the symbol itself
<PulkoMandy> it's something referring to it
<PulkoMandy> so it could be any code using std::string, basically
<PulkoMandy> the full message is CMakeFiles/cmTC_01112.dir/src.cxx.o: relocation R_X86_64_PC32 against symbol `_ZNSs4_Rep11_S_terminalE' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
<PulkoMandy> so the problem is in src.cxx.o which is not part of the standard library
<PulkoMandy> and is compiled with cmake
<PulkoMandy> we need to find how this was compiled now?
<PulkoMandy> the problem is, it seems, ninja will not log the command for succesful build steps

<jadedctrl> I ran into that issue― package isn't installable through repos, but building the package manually works fine

<Vidrep_64> Hi

<Vidrep_64> Begasus_32, how's things over there?
<Begasus_32> strugling with the other laptop, guess I ruined it ;)
<Begasus_32> maybe I should just whipe out the whole hd and start new
<Begasus_32> on the other hand, this one is running hp again, so pleased with that :)
<Vidrep_64> How did you mess up your laptop?
<Begasus_32> I'm guessing with changing a partition type
<Begasus_32> well, at least I can whipe out the old remainings from Windows now and take more place for others on the HD (hopefully)
<Vidrep_64> You were dual booting Windows with something else?
<Begasus_32> grabbing libpurple_x86-2.14.5-5-x86_gcc2.hpkg and moving it to /Opslag/haikuports/packages/libpurple_x86-2.14.5-5-x86_gcc2.hpkg

<Cacafuego> Trying to set a password for my user with the "password" command doesn't seem to recognize "enter" (or it hangs) - known problem in R2/Beta (Feb)?
<kallisti5[m]> passwd command?
<Cacafuego> My brain typed "passwd" but my fingers did not
<kallisti5[m]> ah ok. also R1/Beta2 or R1/Beta3?
<Cacafuego> But yes, I used "passwd"
<Cacafuego> R1/Beta2 sorry
<kallisti5[m]> gotcha :-) weird. passwd should work just fine to set your user password :-|
<kallisti5[m]> it's really only used for remote login (aka ssh) though
<kallisti5[m]> are you testing that password via ssh? or is the command failing to run?
<Cacafuego> Right, was trying to secure ssh
<kallisti5[m]> ah. ok. so that's a different issue
<kallisti5[m]> "user" on Haiku is uid 0
<kallisti5[m]> thus counts as root
<Cacafuego> The command runs, and I get a "new password: " prompt, but nothing happens after that
<Cacafuego> root is fine
<kallisti5[m]> and per our default ssh config, the root user is no-password
<kallisti5[m]> edit /boot/system/config/ssh/sshd_config
<kallisti5[m]> make sure "PermitRootLogin" is yes
<Cacafuego> Right
<kallisti5[m]> and not "prohibit-password"
<kallisti5[m]> I fixed that in our vagrant images... and I think we fixed it in the next release
<Cacafuego> Fixed which, kallisti5[m]?
<kallisti5[m]> it's all just confusing because your username is "user" and not root
<Cacafuego> That part is fine, no confusion
<kallisti5[m]> Make sure PermitRootLogin yes is in /boot/system/config/ssh/sshd_config

<aruiz> I am trying to make GRUB learn how to detect other OSes, I am using the filesystem layout as heuristic, is there a file that is always present in the system even in older versions of haiku (or even BeOS)?
