<augiedoggie>
it seemed like a lot of people were against mascots when it was discussed on the forums
<kallisti5[m]>
true. it doesn't have to be the main logo though
<kallisti5[m]>
just supplemental
<augiedoggie>
eh, i have no desire for a mascot in any form
<win8linux[m]>
<kallisti5[m]> "hm. I wonder if Haiku, Inc..." <- IMO yes, as Tyson is the only one offering such a service and has a proven track record.
<win8linux[m]>
Might I suggest that Haiku, Inc. provide iconography samples to them, as possible references for a mascot?
<repetitivestrain>
same. i don't see why a mascot is a must-have
<repetitivestrain>
i think the leaf looks just fine

kallisti5: There is one unused mascot from Tyson that was made around professional software and had a different artstyle from the usual:
<rennj>
what is with this anime anthropomorphic foobar
<rennj>
younger generation of anime consumers?
<win8linux[m]>
There's really no other professional artist offering free mascots for open source projects.
<win8linux[m]>
* There's really no other professional artist offering free mascots for open source projects.
<rennj>
i think there terrible
<rennj>
but then beauty is in the eye of beholder
<win8linux[m]>
I'm neither a fan of anime (partly for medical reasons) nor a furry, but I can appreciate technical and creative skills.
<win8linux[m]>
Tyson can clearly design mascots that can appeal to people and are flexible.
<win8linux[m]>
Aside from being a representation and promotion of a project, mascots can also be used as basis for merchandise that can be bought to help fund projects too.
<rennj>
i prefer the amiga checkmark, the sun logo, sgi logo, next logo, not some anthropomorphic animal,
<rennj>
haiku and leaf is more appealing
<rennj>
to me...its that simple
<AlienSoldier>
well right now we kinda have a ladybug :)
<AlienSoldier>
The Zeta Mosquito was awful
<rennj>
freebsd beastie, linux tux. openbsd blowfish all seemed no where near as professional looking..
<win8linux[m]>
The leaf is really more of a logo, which is different from a mascot.
<rennj>
sun had the java mascot foo, it was lame
<AlienSoldier>
was not a fan either of the java one
<AlienSoldier>
liked the plan 9 bunny
<rennj>
glenda i think
<AlienSoldier>
yes
<win8linux[m]>
Glenda was well designed.
<AlienSoldier>
even like the amiga eric swartz furry

They are not as much a craze as in the 90's. Car company don't have any.

fricking dragon... sun had the watermarks calvin,hobbs,mustang,dragon on their motherboards
<AlienSoldier>
New game console don't really have them anymore.
<rennj>
sun4c sun4h sun4m sun4d
<AlienSoldier>
well Tesla have Elon :)
<rennj>
heh
<win8linux[m]>
AlienSoldier: Just Sony, really. MS still has Master Chief and Nintendo still uses Mario as mascots.
<AlienSoldier>
but those are more melted into general IP now
<AlienSoldier>
at least compared to before
<win8linux[m]>
MS and Nintendo did expand their gaming businesses, so that's natural.
<AlienSoldier>
we also have the tracker dog
<AlienSoldier>

nephele: using fp registers in kernel makes it much more annoying
<milek7>
either performance penalty of saving everything on all traps, or make fp instructions trap also in kernel but that complicates context switching

Anarchos: generally yes, however make accepts variables (!= env) as arguments.
<win8linux[m]>
However, it refuses to run unless executed directly from its directory.
<PulkoMandy>
you probably can't tweak a makefile generated by cmake this way after the fact
<PulkoMandy>
you rather need to pass the correct arguments to cmake or patch the CMakeLists.txt
<win8linux[m]>
jmairboeck: Thanks, the packaage finnishes building and the game runs!
<PulkoMandy>
cmake does everything to make the build reproductible everywhere, that means ignoring the outside environment as much as possible
<win8linux[m]>
Noticing that the game refuses to run unless ran directly from within its directory.
<win8linux[m]>
Looking at the AUR PKGBUILD, it moves the config.ini and cache to ~ and symlinks them to the app dir.
<jmairboeck>
thats right, adding something like if(HAIKU) target_link_libraries(target_name network) endif() to CMakeLists.txt would probably be better
Anarchos has quit [Quit: Vision[]: i've been blurred!]
