<the_eye> ISTR that some time ago, there was a thread on mastodon (maybe by marcan?) about the "power profile" setting in plasma and that on Asahi, it doesn't actually do what it should.. is that still the case (and what were the details, since tbh I only remember it vaguely since I didn't yet own a Macbook at the time)
<PaulFertser> It's deleted by now but the patch upstream should have changed the default.
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<the_eye> so sliding the slide to "Power Save" now actually saves more power than "balanced"?
<PaulFertser> iirc the default config is already as power efficient as it can.
<PaulFertser> The brightness you adjust manually anyway.
<PaulFertser> And then it all depends on how often the apps you have running are asking for CPU to be woken up from idle.
<PaulFertser> "powertop" is supposed to show the rates

<the_eye> So on my (very old) Intel machines I recall that the perception was that full disk encryption was essentially almost with no performance impact due to [something cpu related]. I was surprised when the initial fedora/asahi installation happened without encrypting root. I have found the docs on how to do it, but - what is the consensus, does it impact performance noticeably?
theruran has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
<chaos_princess> you will not notice, but it technically does impact the performance a bit

<amilie> Evening all !
<amilie> Just wondering if there's any specifics that need contributing to / working on that I could help with :)
nesnas has joined #asahi
<fl0_id> amilie lots of stuff. depending on your hardware what you could work on I guess
<fl0_id> and your skills
<amilie> I'm on a M3 Pro chip, so if that helps give an indication of what I'm capable at and I'm more of a high level developer wanting to get into low level programming so I won't be that useful lmao
<fl0_id> amilie for starters, I'll fix up a t6030 bringup PR for m1n1 soon, but I have a t6031. so if you could then test the t6030 part that would be great. (which would involve adding a second macos install manually, then installing m1n1 from recovery mode
<fl0_id> and then testing if you can start it
<fl0_id> then from there if it works you can play around to try to get stuff to work ;)
<amilie> Sounds good to me, will be more than happy to do so
<fl0_id> ok cool
<fl0_id> if you hang around here, I can just ping you when it's ready (but won't be today anymore)
<amilie> Just gimme a ping when you got a PR, I'll have IRC open in the background
<fl0_id> ok cool
<amilie> Sounds good to me
<fl0_id> (just checking b/c sometimes ppl just very quickly pop into irc and then leave)
<amilie> Yeah I'll keep it open dw, if I ever pop offline I'll be back on asap, just got iffy internet that's all when movin round and stuff
<amilie> If ya wanna contact me elsewhere just lemme know
nesnas has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chaos_princess> there is a link to public logs in the topic, you can read that if you want to ensure you do not miss anything
<amilie> Sounds good, I've already took a brief view from the website but I'll look a bit more in detail
nesnas has joined #asahi
<fl0_id> amilie yeah no worries, I'll just try later if you are away for a bit.
<amilie> Won't be away til tomorrow which will be brief and I've got my laptop on me all times so I shouldn't be too hard to reach out to either way
<PaulFertser> You'll need another computer for testing too.
<amilie> Mac, or will a Linux desktop be fine?
<amilie> If macOS is needed I can just shove a hackintosh together asap
<fl0_id> linux is fine
<chadmed> amilie: it can be any computer with linux
<amilie> Oh sounds good then
<chaos_princess> y'all have usb working on m3?
<fl0_id> you will also see if it starts without, but you cannot run anything wihtout the second computer
<fl0_id> chaos_princess yes. if by that you mean accessing it from another device
<chaos_princess> yea, m1n1 usb as opposed to serial
<fl0_id> that is merged already at least for t6031
<chaos_princess> cool
<fl0_id> (but that wasn't me)
<amilie> Yeah sounds good, as long as I can boot into my main installation I'm happy, not that I have anything important, it's all cloud based
<fl0_id> amilie yeah, you can always boot back with holding power
<amilie> Sounds good then !
busyspin has joined #asahi
<amilie> Speaking of, I've been meaning to make a second macOS install anyway so I'll do that now
<fl0_id> amilie just be sure it is a different container
<fl0_id> (by default macos like to put it in the same container)
<fl0_id> there is an apple page on how to do it
<amilie> I've made a seperate volume if that's what you mean?
<fl0_id> no
<amilie> Ah alright, lemme google that
<fl0_id> apfs container is a level above
<fl0_id> and then in that can be many volume
nesnas has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<fl0_id> s
nesnas has joined #asahi
<fl0_id> container is in apfs terms what a partition is
<fl0_id> iirc
<amilie> Oh I see, so I'll need an external drive?
<fl0_id> no
<amilie> Oh I see now, I got this
chrisl has joined #asahi
<fl0_id> for ease of use / separation I think asahi does it this way, because it makes removing it easier I think also from linux. (without an apfs driver for example)
<fl0_id> and on a later linux install, partitions are just normal parititons, so outside both containers as far as I understand
<amilie> I see, I'm just using disk util because it's what I'm used to, should'nt be too hard
nesnas has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<fl0_id> amilie yeah sure. for that it's fine anyway, just when later adding linux or efi partitions, docs say to use command line diskutil, as gui diskutil apparently is not as reliable and f.e does the order weird. (but for just adding the second macos install it should be fine I think)
<amilie> Awesome, thanks for making me aware don't wanna accidentally nuke everything lmao
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<fl0_id> it wouldn't nuke anything I think, just not work properly. this also might help: https://leo3418.github.io/asahi-wiki-build/partitioning-cheatsheet/
<fl0_id> (though without installing linux, a lot of that is not important)
<amilie> Alrighty container made im 99% sure
<amilie> /dev/disk4 (synthesized):
<amilie> That should be correct if I'm not mistaken
nesnas has joined #asahi
<fl0_id> it will show you, with diskutil list or in gui. if it's in hierarchy below the existing one, it's a volume, if it's a new container it's displayed on its own
<amilie> Yup it's a new thing seperate from /dev/disk3 with my main 400GB partition on
<amilie> Looks like it worked
<fl0_id> ok cool
<amilie> Grabbin an install package to install macOS awesum
<nicolas17> fl0_id: asahi does it this way because it's the only way
<nicolas17> an apfs container can only have apfs volumes
<nicolas17> to have Linux and Mac share space in the same apfs container/partition, you would need apfs as the linux root filesystem
<fl0_id> nicolas17 right, good point. With that part I meant the separate apfs container for m1n1
<fl0_id> which might also be the only possible way, or at least easier
<amilie> Alrighty it's installing
<amilie> 99% sure it's a seperate container, we'll find out soon ig
<nicolas17> I remember a tool that installed Ubuntu with the rootfs as a *file* in the Windows partition, what was it called...
<nicolas17> wubi!
<amilie> Didn't they get BUTTERFS or whatever it is working on Windows?
<fl0_id> amilie yeah but wubi was much earlier. and also used an ... interesting boot loader construct
