<Stardust>
Hi. I have a question, if a mac mini is locked, is it possible to wipe MacOS and install Asahi?
<chaos_princess>
activation lock? no
<Stardust>
I was thinking about buying a used M1 to experiment with Asahi and if it's locked, it's about twice as cheap
<chaos_princess>
activation lock = most likely stolen
<chaos_princess>
those are only useful for parts
<Stardust>
Also do you recommend M1 or M2? I don't think I would want M3 or M4 because they don't have USB-A ports and all my devices are USB-A, and I don't like tons of converter adaptors
pb17 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<Stardust>
I also wonder how they steal such things anyway? I mean it's easy to steal a laptop, but Mini?
<Stardust>
It would usually be used inside one's home
<psykose>
people are known to have things stolen from houses
<Stardust>
I guess
<Stardust>
What does it mean "Blocked on iCloud but status clean"?
<Stardust>
I have checked used M1/2 and some are on find me, those, I guess, stolen, others are "clean"
<chaos_princess>
it is probably signed in to icloud, and you can't remove the previous owner's account as you do not know their password, but it is not marked as locked in fmm
<chaos_princess>
which means the previous owner could lock it at any time
<chaos_princess>
i would suggest just not buying likely-stolen crap in general
<Stardust>
chaos_princess, but if it's locked this way can it be used to install Asahi? Then it won't get signal from Apple while it's running Linux, right?
<Stardust>
Or installation requires knowing iCloud password?
<chaos_princess>
i don't know exactly, and my advice about not buying stolen stuff stands
<Stardust>
Alright. Then another question, M1 or M2?
<Stardust>
I am not apple fan and I only thinking about apple stuff because it can run Linux
<PaulFertser>
Imagine buying a stolen bicycle. You can ride it but will you be happy knowing some fellow bike enthusiast is missing it?..
<chaos_princess>
m2 is newer, but i do not know about the prices in whatever market you are looking at, so take this into account
<chaos_princess>
PaulFertser: also another fellow bike enthusiast can remotely kill it at any point
chrisl has joined #asahi
<Stardust>
PaulFertser, if it's icloud locked it could be its legitimate owner forgetting the password and such
<Stardust>
It is not necessarily stolen
<PaulFertser>
chaos_princess: even if he can not it would still be a bad idea, that's my point. I agree with you not on technical grounds but on ethical ones.
<chaos_princess>
Stardust: no, thats "those are legally ripped dvds" level of cope, legitimate owner can phone apple and get it unlocked
<Stardust>
Anyway, my question is technical. I want to know how it works before starting. For example, suppose I buy a clean mini, can I install Asahi not connecting it to internet with apple OS and not registering on iCloud at all?
<Stardust>
I don't want proprietary software connecting to internet from my home
<Stardust>
Also if I buy used one, is there a easy way to check whether it's bound to iCloud or not?
<chaos_princess>
installing asahi requires you to access either macos or recovery, and iirc if fmm is enabled recovery also requires entering admin password. Also install requires you to enter machine owner password (in most cases same as admin password)

chaos_princess, prices are like that: m2/16/512 is $500, M1 without lock $300, M1 locked $150 here
<chaos_princess>
well, thats up to you as to whether you want to pay $200 extra for m2
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<Stardust>
Does M2 add much?
<chaos_princess>
imo - not really
<jbe>
m2/16/512 for $500 sounds like a good deal. especially if an m1 with, I assume, 8 is 300
<chaos_princess>
but if the m1 is 8gb, go for m2, 8gb is quite cramped

What about 256 vs 512?
JayBeeFOSS has joined #asahi
<chaos_princess>
up to you, look at your current machine and decide for yourself if 256 is enough
<chaos_princess>
imo - no, but i do not know how you use your computers

Stardust: yes it may be legitimate but we explicitly do not support or entertain supporting icloud locked devices. buy them at your own risk, do not discuss acquiring them here.
simjnd has joined #asahi
<chaos_princess>
there is also the bit that we can't do this on a technical level even if we hypothetically wanted to. "what if someone wipes macos and uses it as a linux box only" was a design consideration when making fmm/the rest of the secure boot system

Is there a wiki page or something on how it works on technical level, given I don't have much of personal experience with Apple stuff. I have poked Mini 2005 and installed Slackintosh on it, but that about it. Back then it was similar enough to regular PC but you need to know OpenFirmware commands and keycombos.

Hey about the microphone on m2 pro 2023. With the latest kernel the mic shows up with "arecord -l" and on "pactl list cards" it only has 2 profiles off and pro-audio. I couldnt get it to record using arecord either. I can provide more info if needed, and sorry if it is somethingg you are already aware.
