<jannau> hej, is here anyone using the sd-card reader in Macbook Pros / Mac Studio regularly? If so have you noticed issues with UHS-1 or UHS-2 cards (fast sdcards, type is printed in the kernel log)?
<LarstiQ> I don't think I've ever used it, I could try now but that's maybe not helpful?
<MichaelLong> jannau, actually I have had issues since the beginning with a 1TB microSD-card which cannot be read on a Macbook Pro M1, I can give more details later that day.
<MichaelLong> the 1TB card is working fine under macOS but on Linux there are only a couple mmc specific dmesg outputs. I can try to grab them again. Other microSD-cards (64 GB, 256GB) have been working so far (but not really used regulary)
<jannau> 256GB one should be at least UHS-1, the 1TB one is probably UHS-2, should have been backwards compatible but issues could be related to the issue I see with UHS-2 support added in 6.13
<MichaelLong> jannau, the 1TB card works in almost every other reader I've tested, in those of cheap USB-C docks, in a PCIe based realtek one (Thinkpad T460p) etc. not sure why it is not working in asahi. I've not seen any other device with that particular sd-card reader which is used in my MacbookProM1

<PaulFertser> For the reference, the kernel log might be talking about something like "SDR50" or "SDR104", not just UHS-I. And if want to check using a card-reader attached via USB (e.g. one integrated in a Type-C "dock") there will not be any speed indication at all, but one can benchmark.

<ar> nicolas17: huh. there are >2TB SD cards now?
<ar> TIL
<nicolas17> <fl0_id> nicolas17 supposedly the biggest one right now is 4 tb
<nicolas17> <nicolas17> the bits are all right next to each other!
<nicolas17> <fl0_id> kind of like a very cramped bit-hostel
<chaos_princess> Don't worry, it will still fail after 2 gb written

<Tenkawa> chaos_princess: or melt....
<Tenkawa> The layers are going to have to get thinner and more compact....
<Tenkawa> and thats going to make heat resistance drop
<nicolas17> raspberry pi with a 1cm² heatsink on the SoC and another on the SD card
<Tenkawa> haaahaa
<Tenkawa> I got a kit full of those
<Tenkawa> good use for those flat ones
<Tenkawa> I hav one of those 100pc+ heatsink kits.... wasn't sure what those would be good for
<MichaelLong> my SanDisk 1TB Ultra Max Extreme Pro Plus card has so many labels on it A1, C10, etc. (if you can read them) but in the end it only writes disapointing 18MB/s :(
<Tenkawa> ouch..
<Tenkawa> MichaelLong: what hardware you writing on?
<nicolas17> I put a Crucial P2 SSD on my laptop (which only had an HDD)
<MichaelLong> Tenkawa, MacBookProM1 on macOS (doesn't work yet on linux), but sure if it is the microSD card, the reader, file system etc.
<nicolas17> it's great, until the SLC write cache fills up
<Tenkawa> I'm concerned its the reader.. let me throw on my 512gb and run a test...
<Tenkawa> MBP M1 here
<nicolas17> once SLC fills up I think an HDD would beat its sequential write throughput
<nicolas17> (and I wish I could know *how* full the SLC is via SMART or something)

<Tenkawa> My wife gets the next upgrade though... her laptop is almost 10 years old
<gachikuku> damn she has too! I gave my m1 to my partner and shes doing fine
<gachikuku> so do what i did xD
<Tenkawa> She has great Apple tablets... just not a very good computer and she's the real programmer of the family.. I'm the sysadmin/dba/code hacker
<Tenkawa> I am "not" a structured coder....
<Tenkawa> But I do like projects like Asashi/etc because I can debug low level C/C++/assembly code very well
<gachikuku> same here, I would describe my self exactly as you describe yourself
<Tenkawa> (was my job)
<Tenkawa> I'm trying to find a used/refurb M1 Mac mini to put Asahi on
<Tenkawa> at its current price I might just buy new...
<Tenkawa> and get a M4
<fl0_id> Tenkawa well the main benefit of m1 would be better linux support :) if you wait until they drop out of apple support they'll prob be much cheaper... but that should still take a while

<quaff> what's the best way to resize macOS' partition and give asahi's partition more space? Without reformatting would be best
<nicolas17> shrinking macOS is easy, the asahi installer does that for you so you can do it manually again with a similar command, diskutil I think
<nicolas17> the problem will be moving and enlarging the asahi partition
<nicolas17> I have done that on PCs using gparted from a liveusb, and there's no such thing as liveusb on apple silicon so that's not an option...
<chaos_princess> There is live usb in a sense, copy your linux install to a usb stick, then change root= in grub to point to it
<quaff> nicolas17: ah so I can shrink my macOS from asahi itself?
CME_ has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chaos_princess> No, reboot to macos and do it from there
<nicolas17> no, there aren't such apfs tools for Linux
<nicolas17> tbh it might be easier to backup the Linux partition, remove it, run the asahi installer to shrink macOS more and recreate the Linux partition, then restore the backup
<nicolas17> an in-place resize will have to read and write every block of the Linux partition anyway
<Tenkawa> diskutil lets you do all the pre-manipulation you really need
<Tenkawa> (If you don't feel uncomfortable using the cli)
<nicolas17> can diskutil move/resize the Linux partition?
<nicolas17> (obviously not the filesystem but you can do that online after booting Linux)
<quaff> gah. I just got my laptop setup. not looking forward to redoing some of it. I know I can just copy my homefolder and restore it.
<quaff> Is there a way to easily enable FDE for asahi linux yet?
<Tenkawa> I have only removed a Linux one with it... I haven't trried to manipulate one so I can't say.. I defer to channel ( I had Fedora and Ubuntu both installed on here... I eventually needed to redo some things)
<quaff> may be worth re-installing if I enable that.
<Tenkawa> quaff: in linux?
<Tenkawa> just cp/rsync ~user
<Tenkawa> if all you want is the homedir
<quaff> hm.. that leaves out everything installed on the system. but yes. I was thinking of doing that.
<quaff> I just mean, if I am gonna have to go through the trouble of reinstalling everything, I would want to get full disk encryption enabled. Is that still not recommended or easily doable on asahi (or maybe it is, and I'm just sorely out of date)
<Tenkawa> my poor drive would hate me if I encrypted it at this point
<Tenkawa> Data Units Read: 110,270,601 [56.4 TB]
<Tenkawa> Data Units Written: 132,985,760 [68.0 TB]
<Tenkawa> I don't think I need to be adding encryption levels of io to that
<quaff> lol
<quaff> good thing I'm asking about my system! I've only got 512GB
