<trungnt2910[m]>
git on bash on Haiku on Ubuntu on Windows.
<ermo[m]>
The unholy trinity it sounds more like! (🤪)
<ermo[m]>
I've used WSL2 w/fedora. The I/O perf was fairly poor IIRC.
<trungnt2910[m]>
ermo[m]: This is WSL1.
<ermo[m]>
(I was on vacation and only brought my laptop whilst managing to get some dev work in for another project)
HaikuUser has joined #haiku
<ermo[m]>
I was under the impression that WSL2 is better in most respects? Did I miss something obvious?
<trungnt2910[m]>
So I/O on my device is almost as good as native NTFS.
<trungnt2910[m]>
ermo[m]: Better compatibility, yes, because it uses the full Linux kernel.
HaikuUser has quit []
<trungnt2910[m]>
But better design? No. It's just a dumb VM using the Hyper-V framework.
<ermo[m]>
Is there any particular reason you have chosen to run windows (I'm genuinely curious)?
<trungnt2910[m]>
Good dev environment (Apart from C++ I also do quite a lot of .NET so I need Visual Studio), good integration with everything (phone, cloud accounts,...), easy to use (don't have to search Stack Exchange for a long terminal command for every small config).
<ermo[m]>
I've been thinking for a while that MS' strategy and tactics re. Linux/git appears to make it look like an integrated piece of MS tech, such that people on Windows are comfortable _staying_ on windows by saying "hey, you can have your cake and eat it too -- booting up a Linux dev env is as easy as (x,y,z)!"
<ermo[m]>
* appears to be to make it
<ermo[m]>
I've personally reached the point where I'm not going to dual boot between Linux and Windows -- the secure boot stuff on Windows is just too much of a hassle.
<ermo[m]>
(or it appears that way to me in any case -- could just be me not having studied the subject thoroughly enough)
<ermo[m]>
Then again, I have entirely too many (old) computers, so...
<trungnt2910[m]>
<ermo[m]> "I was under the impression..." <- Also, despite all the MS lies about WSL2 and Hyper-V working well with VMWare and VirtualBox, WSL2 prevents me from running my Haiku VM at full speed.
<ermo[m]>
Oh? How so?
<trungnt2910[m]>
The "Virtual Machine Platform" junk that WSL2 depends on, prevents VMware from starting a hypervisor natively. Instead, it has to use some Windows APIs to start a hypervisor, which is slower.
* ermo[m]
wonders what's going on there
<matt3>
ermo[m] : peace ...
<ermo[m]>
like, I wonder if it's a future compatibility thing or if it's a deliberate performance hampering ploy
<ermo[m]>
anyway, sorry, this is not a windows channel
<ermo[m]>
I'll stuff my pipe back in. =)
<matt3>
ermo[m] => trinity ???

Skipp_OSX: could you please add transparent background support for the activity monitor replicants? That would be nice.
<BrunoSpr>
Skipp_OSX is it real alpha blending or just a trick (copiying the backgroung)?

<Skipp_OSX>
we have supported alpha blending for a while now
<Skipp_OSX>
it is real transparency, DeskCalc has a transparent background it already.
Maylay has joined #haiku
<BrunoSpr>
Skipp_OSX thats just wonderful great you work on it! Does it work for Background-Pictures too?
vdamewood has quit [Quit: My MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<Skipp_OSX>
what do you mean? Like can you move it around on top of a background picture, yeah
<Skipp_OSX>
can you put a background picture on the replicant? no
<BrunoSpr>
I would like to use a Picture with alpha transparentcy on the background picture
<Skipp_OSX>
background on the replicant or on the desktop?
<BrunoSpr>
on desktop
<Skipp_OSX>
oh ok yeah you can do that too
<Skipp_OSX>
I think... wait maybe not
<BrunoSpr>
It was not possible before
<Skipp_OSX>
It could be done if the right drawing flags were set ... but I don't think they are
<BrunoSpr>
ah ok but this would be great too
<BrunoSpr>
ok I will look for myself at deskcalc
<BrunoSpr>
Great to have...
<Skipp_OSX>
Activity Monitor graphs are already transparent too... just not the graph part
<Skipp_OSX>
do you really want the graph part to be transparent? You won't be able to see the activity very easily
<BrunoSpr>
Skipp_OSX... yes I noticed that with graphs already
<BrunoSpr>
would be better to see trough, yes... In some cases it looks more implemented... but yes sometimes not a good choice if you have a wrong background
<Skipp_OSX>
What's holding me up right now is that I replaced time running with a non-editable wrapping BTextView and the colors aren't drawing right.
<Skipp_OSX>
I had it working with a BStringView but it will eventually grow too wide to fit, and I don't want to make the replicant wider because it may move the dragger off screen... actually wrapping may do that too but less so
<Skipp_OSX>
hmmm maybe I can grow up ^ instead ...
<Skipp_OSX>
I'm guessing it will be fairly common to put the replicant in the bottom right corner of the screen
<Skipp_OSX>
If time running grows too long ... it will eventually move the dragger off screen and then you'll be screwed
<Skipp_OSX>
I guess you could always reboot to fix it
<Skipp_OSX>
I got the replicant working with different font sizes and even if the font size of AboutSystem doesn't match the Desktop font size it knows how to handle that.
<Skipp_OSX>
Open Appearance, change font size, open AboutSystem, drag onto Desktop. Desktop is still at 12pt but the replicant is rendered at the AboutSystem font size

You see where it says 7967 MiB total, 1 MiB inaccessible in my screenshot ? That has to fit in the width provided so I added extra space for different translations... somebody with a ridiculous amount of RAM or a ridiculous language could potentially get cut off so I left a bunch of extra space there. I tested with German, Spanish, French, Russian, and of course English and they all fit with plenty of space on my system at least.
pch has quit []
<extrowerk>
Skipp_OSX: naive solution would be to use GiB instead of MiB.
<extrowerk>
eg 8GB RAM, 1MB inaccessible
<extrowerk>
how is this a problem?
<Skipp_OSX>
The inaccessible text is theoretically possible to be too wide to fit in the space and although I could grow the replicant to fit, I don't want to do that.
<Skipp_OSX>
It should say 8GiB Memory: instead of Memory: like it says 4 Processors
<Skipp_OSX>
I started working on that but it's too tough to round to GiB nicely
<Skipp_OSX>
plus it would burden translators
<Skipp_OSX>
like if you have e.g. 3.5 GiB of RAM I want the decimal digit but if you have 8 GiB I don't want the decimal. If you have 4.25 GiB of RAM? Then I said screw it.
<Skipp_OSX>
I'm sure I could display the right number of decimal places with enough work
Maylay has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<Skipp_OSX>
Anyway the inaccessible text problem is theoretical because I made the replicant wide enough that it should never be a practical issue.

I have a machine here with 128 GIB of RAM I guess I could test on that one to see
<Skipp_OSX>
or i could just put 131072 MiB in manually

<BrunoSpr>
Skipp_OSX ... yes would be nice to put the replicant in the bottom right corner of the screen
<BrunoSpr>
Anyway ... beautiful work on this side...
BrunoSpr has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Skipp_OSX>
yeah even with 128GiB of RAM and locale set to German it fits with considerable extra space
<Skipp_OSX>
German tends to have long words but verfügbar is not that long
