<BarmenduChakraborty[m]> Hey guys. What's the estimated release date of Beta 4?
<PulkoMandy> it's "when it's ready"
<PulkoMandy> there are still some bugs to be fixed and we work on it when we can, for most of us in evening and weekends outside of our full time jobs and other real life activities
<PulkoMandy> so we can't commit to a regular schedule
<BarmenduChakraborty[m]> That's understandable
<BarmenduChakraborty[m]> So what are the major issues you guys are working on?
<PulkoMandy> you can check the roadmap page at https://dev.haiku-os.org/roadmap to see the things left to work on. Not many left currently for beta4, so hopefully in the next few weeks. Unless we discover new problems
Forza_ has joined #haiku
<BarmenduChakraborty[m]> PulkoMandy: Thanks!!
<PulkoMandy> I'm mainly working on the web browser, yesterday I think I fixed one of the remaining problems with downloads not working, but I see on the bugtracker someone said it still doesn't work for them
Forza has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<PulkoMandy> wanted to do more testing but I can't update my haiku install to the latest version due to https://dev.haiku-os.org/ticket/18115 so waiting for that to be fixed
<BarmenduChakraborty[m]> So how do you 'test' stuff?
<PulkoMandy> and this afternoon I go to the end of year concert for the choir I sing in, so not a lot of Haiku work planned today probably anyway
<BarmenduChakraborty[m]> I'm still trying to get the hang of things around here so pardon my silly questions
<PulkoMandy> well I just use Haiku on my main computer. Often I try to work on something and I end up finding bugs in the OS
<PulkoMandy> I hope this new web browser release will allow me to use Haiku more. The previous version of haikuwebkit was not working very well so I end up doing a lot of my web browsing on a windows machine :(
<BarmenduChakraborty[m]> Okayy
<PulkoMandy> after that's fixed and probably after beta4 is out, I will have a look at fixing my touchpad (doesn't work yet on my new laptop) and also trying to get multiple displays working, I saw that Redox OS managed to do multiple displays using only EFI firmware, I want to check if that would be possible on my machine
<PulkoMandy> currently I can use only the laptop internal display, it would be great to use my external and much larger display I think :)
<BarmenduChakraborty[m]> That's true. After using OS like windows and MacOS, it does feel like a ride through the time machine using Haiku. But surprisingly that makes my intrigue go up and find out more about how this stuff actually works
<BarmenduChakraborty[m]> PulkoMandy: That would be a relief I guess
<PulkoMandy> well I had the same problem with the previous laptop as well, but yes, it's quite annoying

<Begasus> Hi andreasdr[m] ! :)
<Begasus> OscarL, what's up with the PR for python, any work needed there?
<augiedoggie> it seems like the last time python was updated it broke pip
<OscarL> For the 3.10.8? As good as it will get, if it depends on me :-D
<Begasus> k, time to investigate then
<OscarL> pip likes to be really up to date. it always complains when you run an older version (at least it does for me on Windows)
<Begasus> maybe that could use an update then too?
<OscarL> I bet, yeah.
<Begasus> Could you have a look at that OscarL ? ;)
x10z has joined #haiku
<OscarL> I'll try, albeit I'm not really experienced enough. I think there are some issues with where the python package expect to install things, that not always match the ones from the pip package (and definitively do NOT match the pip you get if you use "python -m pip install -U pip")
<Begasus> Not familiar there, I know some python recipes as I've updated them in the past, but never used pip
<OscarL> I planned to do my best on that regard for the Python 3.11 recipe + patchset, as I had to "massage" that patchset quite a bit to make it apply, and I was also NOT wanting to alter the previous Python packages :-)
<Begasus> it's library hell once you go there :)
<OscarL> yup.
<botifico> [haikuports/haikuports] Begasus pushed 1 commit to master [+1/-3/±0] https://github.com/haikuports/haikuports/compare/6e954854ec0b...1c855a92bd53
<botifico> [haikuports/haikuports] Begasus 1c855a9 - tidy, bump version (#7517)
<OscarL> and mixing python packages installed with pkgman, with the ones installed by pip... makes some things worse... and hard to pinpoint where the problem is (at least for me).
<Begasus> Maybe you could focus on pip?
<OscarL> I mostly ever used python on windows, so... no conflicts whatsoever with regards to package manager, or system installed interpreter :-)
<OscarL> Begasus: I'll give it a go. With zero promises of not breaking things further :-P
<Begasus> Having pip working as it should would be te way to go OscarL :)
<OscarL> And wheres the fun on that? :-P
<OscarL> augiedoggie: you mean the update from 3.7 to 3.9 as "default Python"? or a particular update on other Python recipe?
<augiedoggie> i think it affected all of them after they were updated but i didn't test each version
<Begasus> It's been reported that with the switch it broke some ...
<OscarL> I see. Might be "simply" that our current pip package is just too old. There has been a lot of activity on pip/setuptools/wheels/etc on the lasts months.

<Begasus> OscarL, so good to go?
<OscarL> On my end, yes.
<Begasus> Thanks :)
<OscarL> there's a lot to fix regarding tests, and problems on Haiku (or the Python port) that those tests might reveal, but it works as fine as it did before, but with optimizations enabled.

<Begasus> 22.2.2
<OscarL> cool, thanks a lot Begasus!
<OscarL> so, basically dropping the PROVIDES_python, right?
<Begasus> looking at the recipe here it looks like that OscarL
<Begasus> thanks bbjimmy
<Begasus> but I'm unsure about pip, so best to check if it's working OscarL :)

<OscarL> Build went OK. But 5 packages where created: pip-22.2.1-any.hpkg (contains only a license) and 4 for each version from 3.7 to 3.10
<Begasus> It's known OscarL
<OscarL> K.
<Begasus> base package doesn't provide anything
<Begasus> *has been mentioned a few times
<OscarL> Will take a look at some WARNINGS that went flying by, to see if they are important or what.
<Begasus> +1
<OscarL> (before doing some "pip install"s to see how it behaves)
<OscarL> Do haikuporter leaves build logs somewhere as it does on buildmaster?
<OscarL> (cause some of the output got cut out of the Terminal screen buffer)
<Begasus> Only when you run it in Termina I think
<Begasus> not sure if it's possible to > log?
<Begasus> any way, closing down here
<OscarL> I guess that's what the buildmaster do. Wish we could do both at the same time.
<OscarL> Nice to "read you" Begasus. Take care!
<Begasus> Thanks OscarL ! nice to read you again also ;)

<OscarL> Halian_Haiku: according to the dev looking into it... he already knows "where" the problem is.
<Halian_Haiku> OscarL: excellent
<Halian_Haiku> ...actually, clarification request: is it the checksum issue or the "provides haiku>=r1~beta4_hrev56578_31-1" issue?
<Halian_Haiku> I'm slightly more interested in the latter, though equally useless in trying to help fix either X3

<AlienSoldier> Halian_Haiku what is the "provide" one?
<OscarL> I mean the checksum issue :-/
<Vidrep_64> Hi OscarL (bipolar)
<OscarL> *meant
<Halian_Haiku> AlienSoldier: [09:06:12] <Halian_Haiku> Also, I can't install most software in the repository, or even upgrade, because nothing I have provides haiku>=r1~beta4_hrev56578_31-1 required by most everything. yay /s
<Halian_Haiku> todo: file a ticket for that as well
<OscarL> Hello there Vidrep_64!
<Halian_Haiku> Vidrep_64: henlo!
<Halian_Haiku> OscarL: ahh
<Halian_Haiku> Looks like it's a PEBKAC issue, as I didn't run `pkgman update`
<OscarL> Problem is... until the checksum issue is resolved... you will not be able to update anyway :-D
<Vidrep_64> Halian_Haiku, are you running Beta 3?
<Halian_Haiku> Vidrep_64: yes; beta 4 won't boot, for which I filed ticket 18116
<Vidrep_64> Ok
<Halian_Haiku> Beta 3 installed fine with the caveat that I have to use fail-safe drivers, otherwise my monitor throws "Out of Range"

<AlienSoldier> OscarL not yet working for me on 32but, perhaps it will take a few min for the 32bit build to be made
<AlienSoldier> i will rety in 30min
<AlienSoldier> *retry
<OscarL> AlienSoldier: could be... I just find out it worked on 64 bits because the mentioned hardwarechecker.sh needed to install some package.. and it just worked :-D
<bbjimmy> Vidrep_64 right click the haiku in the top left corner of haiku-os.org and select Download Image with hrev56627 and HaikuWebKit 1.9.1, one gets a Download labelex -1 and there is no download.

<kallisti5[m]> OscarL: sorry. Working on trying to debug the issue now.. it's a doozy

<OscarL> kallisti5[m]: no problem at all! Thanks for your work, man!
<Vidrep_64> bbjimmy, it's working for me
<kallisti5[m]> Pretty much, if you do more than one build of a same hrev... "some" of the artifacts get updated on s3. Some don't
<bbjimmy> Solid error here.
<kallisti5[m]> making a broken repo
HaikuUser has joined #haiku
<OscarL> Some issue with the hash cache?
<kallisti5[m]> the artifacts at the source are all new. So rclone is choosing to not update "some" artifacts. I really don't get why still. Running rclone with debug output now
<HaikuUser> ._. even after doing an update, I still get the "nothing provides haiku>=r1~beta4_hrev56578_31-1" error
HaikuUser is now known as Halian|Haiku
<kallisti5[m]> OscarL: nah. it's the actual repos in s3
<kallisti5[m]> if I do two builds of the same hrev.. the packages will have differing sha256sums
<OscarL> holy!
<kallisti5[m]> so mixing and matching a repo file, and packages makes a broken repo
<Halian|Haiku> D:
<kallisti5[m]> the differing sha256sums are expected... but rclone can't "choose to update some packages, and not others"
<kallisti5[m]> that's what is causing things to go nuclear
<OscarL> using sync instead of copy is not an option, I assume?
<kallisti5[m]> sync would fix it... but i'm also copying into a directory with other builds
<kallisti5[m]> aka.. copy repo.x86_64/ (master/x86_64/r1~hrevblah) into s3/
<kallisti5[m]> my fear is, sync will delete all the other build directories
<OscarL> Ah... understood.
<kallisti5[m]> since they "dont exist at the source"
<kallisti5[m]> yeah... it's tricky
<OscarL> yup
<kallisti5[m]> and for the copy command, i don't have access to r1~hrevblah
<kallisti5[m]> so i can't put it "into the correct directory"
Halian|Haiku has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
freakazoid332 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<kallisti5[m]> my assumption was "copy" would copy and overwrite any old artifacts. The fact that rclone is only "overwriting some artifacts" is weird
<kallisti5[m]> so then i'd assume there's some -f (force overwrite) for rclone copy... but there isn't lol
<kallisti5[m]> :sigh:
<kallisti5[m]> anyway.. i'm hopeful rclone -vv will tell me why it's making these stupid choices
HaikuUser has joined #haiku
<kallisti5[m]> if we can make rclone work, we can distribute identical artifacts to a huge number of places at build (archive.org, etc)
