got a crazy deal on an HP Z240 and it quite happily runs the latest nightly after I enable failsafe graphics

Is it possible to use Git LFS on Haiku?
<OscarL>
AlaskanEmily: if you can, please open a ticket for that mismatched kernel date thing, so that problem doesn't gets forgotten :-). Thanks in advance.
<OscarL>
Sorry, I mean AlienSoldier.
* OscarL
is just waking up.
<AlaskanEmily>
...what
<AlaskanEmily>
Oh
<AlaskanEmily>
lol
<OscarL>
s/mean/meant
<AlaskanEmily>
Heh, no worries
<OscarL>
I can't even spell :-)
<OscarL>
I sure wish I could have some Alaskan cool breeze... we're expecting 40+ celcius here for the rest of the week down here :-(
<AlaskanEmily>
Woof, it's been about freezing for almost a month now here
<OscarL>
Wish we could trade at least some 15 C :-D
<OscarL>
Gets hard to get any sleep when the low temp at night is >=24C :-(
<OscarL>
Got that pip updated and tested. Seems to work just fine. It revealed some problems on the Python 3.10 port thou :-D
<Begasus>
yeah read the comments on the PR
<Begasus>
test for wget2 are ok now also, thanks there!
<OscarL>
:-)
<Begasus>
doesn't seem to pick up libmicrohttpd it seems with configure
<Begasus>
undefined reference to `MHD_free'
<Begasus>
maybe I should bump the version for that one
<OscarL>
Ah... the joys of porting/packaging softwware! :-P
<Begasus>
I see in one of the failing test it doesn't take it ... so maybe ... :)

OscarL i will when i get time. i wonder when that take is probed, is it at the bootloader level? I seem to have a weird issue also when using previous state (like i do right now because web+ and epiphany did not want to start last time i updated (otter was still loading)
<AlienSoldier>
*that date
<AlienSoldier>
almost feel as if my booting state were ofcet by one
<AlienSoldier>
*offset
<OscarL>
AlienSoldier: the problem is that the replicant's kernel date never gets updated. It is only initialized when the replicant is created.
<AlienSoldier>
then my bootloader problem is something else
<OscarL>
Ah.. you mean the hrev in the lower right corner?
<OscarL>
Yeah, that gets picked up elseswhere... lemme see if I can find it.
<AlienSoldier>
in my bootloader problem?
<OscarL>
yes
<OscarL>
Sorry, I'm mixing things up.
<AlienSoldier>
hehe
<OscarL>
brain half working, as usual :-(
<AlienSoldier>
no in the bootloader my problem is that the state i select don't seem to be the right one unless i chooose "latest"
<OscarL>
Understood.
<AlienSoldier>
being a while i have that trouble, perhaps it is corrupted
<AlienSoldier>
as i don't think that it is overwritten with a softwareupdater update
<OscarL>
I had some issues in the past... where some previous states become unbootable.
<AlienSoldier>
mine are bootable, just don't boot the right one
<OscarL>
due to some who-knows-what interactions between packages.
Blub\0 has joined #haiku
<OscarL>
by "unbootable" I mean... the system still booted....
<OscarL>
but NOT on the state I've selected.
<AlienSoldier>
or perhaps the "latest" is not shown in the list? (that would be bad as seeing the date is important)
<OscarL>
The problem I had with that is... it fails silently in that case... ie: if the state you selected, for some reason can't be booted (conflicts with packages)... you get booted to another state (the latest in my case).
<OscarL>
but you don't see that unless manually checking the hrev.
<AlienSoldier>
right now the builds seem stucj at hrev56627
<AlienSoldier>
*stuck
<AlienSoldier>
OscarL might be what is happening in my case
<Begasus>
bugger, needs newer gettext :(
<AlienSoldier>
might also get triggered perhaps when an update is aborded (like it was when the checksum error was present a few day ago)
smalltalkman has joined #haiku
<AlienSoldier>
btw the timming to be able to summon the boot menu option is horrendous, i often miss it and the OS boot without letting me do my state selection
<OscarL>
In my case was something like this: Update hrev, OK... update package X, OK, update hrev OK (but had some issues), updated package X and other things.. try to revert to previous hrev... no dice. (older states, pre installing package X, still worked)
<OscarL>
AlienSoldier: yeah.... depending on the PC... either I get to it really easy... or have to try 5 times to get it right :-)
<AlienSoldier>
the "gameplay" suck
<OscarL>
Holding SHIFT after post seems more reliable than hitting SPACEBAR, thou.
<OscarL>
s/post/POST
<AlienSoldier>
are both key working now?
<OscarL>
Left SHIFT do at least.
<AlienSoldier>
i think it was that initially, then it moved to space bar, perhaps it was reinstated. I remember it to be easier when it was shift also
<OscarL>
If you have leds on your keyboard... holding SHIFT right after they flash for the first time makes it work reliable in my experience.
<Begasus>
afaik I always used spacebar, even in BeOS
<OscarL>
I used spacebar since BeOS too. Only recently picked up the SHIFT trick.
<AlienSoldier>
perhaps we would need a little characterbased visual cue
<AlienSoldier>
like a countdown
<AlienSoldier>
wiht a color change chshowing the command registred
freddietilley has joined #haiku
<Begasus>
maybe something like linux does, show the bootmenu for a few seconds?
<OscarL>
BootManager lets you choose a time out before autoselecting a boot entry.
<AlienSoldier>
having it in the shutdown menu as restart option would save time and promote it's dicoverability
<AlienSoldier>
even if sometime you can't reach it that way if the desktop don't boot at all or kdl
<OscarL>
If you're in that boot menu, holding SHIFT before hitting ENTER on the Haiku entry... is 100% reliable to enter the boot manager options.
<OscarL>
I like the idea of "let's reboot into the bootmanager options".
<Begasus>
never been there :)
<AlienSoldier>
OscarL perhaps we need two time, one for the volume selector and one from the menu time frame input reading.
<AlienSoldier>
yes, i think shift enter combo is read better than space-enter. May depend on keyboard. I have an old IBM PS2 one.
* OscarL
consirders BeOS/Haikus bootman the best MBR menu since XOSL (that needed to store a bit of data on other partitions, but still).

"MusicBrainz Picard is a cross-platform (Linux, macOS, Windows)" where's the Haiku mention!? :-P
<Begasus>
you should poke phw there :)
<outsidecontext>
OscarL: (phw here) sorry, for now publishing on Haiku is my own personal side project. I didn't dare yet making Haiku that official. Generally Picard is cross platform and theoretically runs anywhere where you have Python + Qt5 available. But the officially supported plaforms are these three.
<outsidecontext>
And usually Haiku receives the update on release day :D You even get it earlier than those users using Flatpak or Snap on Linux or Microsoft store on Windows
<OscarL>
No problems at all outsidecontext! I was just being playful. Thanks for maintaining a Haiku port at all!

so hmm - when I'm booted into Haiku on this Z240, there's a constant sound that's akin to a spinning harddrive seeking
<zdykstra>
but this system does not have any spinning disks - just SSDs
<zdykstra>
It starts up during the boot process (but not in the UEFI firmware) and then remains on while in Haiku regardless of activity/CPU load

(AGMS) zdykstra, could be a fan. On my laptop, the voltage regulators also whine in time to CPU load.
<zdykstra>
hmm, yeah. I popped the side of the case off and tried to localize it, but couldn't do so.
<zdykstra>
It doesn't happen in Windows - not sure what that means.
<B2IA>
(AGMS) On a related note, if you can change the brightness of the LCD screen, that could make noise to (voltage regulators again).
<zdykstra>

<augiedoggie>
waddlesplash: i never got around to working on ncurses6
<B2IA>
(AGMS) To track it down would be a bit dangerous, touching a stick or other solid to each component, and have a paper cone on the other end of the stick, to see where the noise is coming from.
<zdykstra>
the good old screwdriver on the engine trick, theh
<B2IA>
(AGMS) Unfortunately, microphones likely won't work, since they often can't pick up high frequency noise.
<B2IA>
(AGMS) Yes, precisely, screwdriver on the different engine components to see where the noise is coming from.
<B2IA>
(AGMS) In case you're wondering, voltage regulators for CPUs and such have small coils acting as transformers, and that's where the noise can be generated.
<zdykstra>
I just did a CPU swap, I think I'll swap back to the older Xeon to see if the sound follows
