I really dig how you can use the installer to clone a running system to another disk. I wonder if that's scriptable, as a cheap way to do a backup.

adding a new server to Vision just KDL'd my nightly. Oof, hehe.
<waddlesplash>
screenshot?
<waddlesplash>
and are you sure it was KDL, or was it app_server crash?
<zdykstra>
I didn't grab a screenshot, sorry. It very possibly was an app_server crash; I'd have to see examples of both to be able to clearly identify which was which.
<waddlesplash>
KDL always has the famous "Welcome to Kernel Debugging Land" on the second line
HaikuUser has joined #haiku
<waddlesplash>
app_server or input_server crash does not, it will instead have various Debugger messages
<waddlesplash>
there have been some app_server crashes recently from the new font code plus the new WebFont-supporting HaikuWebKit
<waddlesplash>
otherwise the two are visually similar (black text on white background, etc.)
<zdykstra>
sounds like it's more likely to have been an app_server crash, then
<waddlesplash>
yes, probably
<waddlesplash>
what hrev are you on? there were fixes in hrev56765 to that code
<zdykstra>
I was on 56762, I believe
<zdykstra>
I'm on 56764 now
<waddlesplash>
hm, is hrev56765 not available?
<waddlesplash>
it was over 24 hours ago, it should have been built by now
<zdykstra>
My wife came down last night and saw the 'Icons' screen saver on a screen. She commented just how much she likes the icons in Haiku :)

I'm getting the update now. I'm still perpetually plagued with update errors when querying the remote repository.
<zdykstra>
The only way I can update is by repeatedly running 'pkgman update' until it finally connects cleanly.
<zdykstra>
not one that I've created, but I'll create one tonight if it doesn't already exist by someone else

on a different topic: forum categories have just been significantly reorganized, should be easier to figure out where to put things now. https://discuss.haiku-os.org/categories
<zdykstra>
nice
<zdykstra>
I'm really surprised at how 'right' Haiku is out of the box on a 4k screen
<zdykstra>
very pleasant experience there
<waddlesplash>
there's still some spots I notice that aren't quite right
<waddlesplash>
but that's probably because I spent so much time staring at things in pixel editors and flipping between scales and comparing metrics and ...
<waddlesplash>
so the incorrectly scaled bits stand out to me a bit more
<zdykstra>
hah. Did you run two installs/monitors side-by-side to compare?
<waddlesplash>
two installs in two VMs
<waddlesplash>
for the latest round anyway where I was doing per-pixel comparisons to see what didn't scale properly
<waddlesplash>
the first rounds back in 2020, I did entirely on bare metal without comparing to low-DPI
<zdykstra>
by the way, if people are looking for a good "little" system, Lenovo Tiny PCs work wonderfully under Haiku. I picked up an M920x for $140 USD and it works very well.
<jessicah>
zdykstra: I use 'until' with pkgman to continue in a loop until succeeded when it's a big update
<jessicah>
something like: until pkgman update -y ; do echo 'retrying...' ; done
<AlienSoldier>
that is weird, crashed media player show in memory usage but not in cpu usage. Can't kill it so i can't restart it
<AlienSoldier>
terminal don't kill it either

with two disks and two Haiku installs attached to the same disk, how do I pick which one is booted by default? I can interrupt the bootloader and select a volume each time I boot, but that doesn't seem to be persisted anywhere.
<zdykstra>
s/same disk/same system
<PulkoMandy>
If using legacy boot, you can set the active partition in drivesetup
<PulkoMandy>
With gpt, I'm not sure
<zdykstra>
I'm using GPT/UEFI
