hmmmm... so nothing in alsamixer should be touched to get unmuted the speaker? Cause even the issue with not finding the card has been resolved, and alsamixer starts, there is no sound coming out of the speakers. Not even when putting my ear all the way into them

yeah, on my desktops alsamixer only shows a few, sensible things. The audio stack was simpler back then. Now I just use whatever works, and where audio over HDMI isn't too much of a pain

yeah, I haven't found it in /sys, so i3status which populates waybar for me can't find it. But it also expects it to be in the form `/sys/class/power_supply/XXXX%d` so looks like I can't use the built in battery fetching from that
