wonders if dorje had enough patience with properly restarting input_server when testing that filter.
<OscarL>
input_server not always "plays nice" when testing new filters, and might actually need a reboot for things to work without hiccups.
<OscarL>
(that's my experience, at least, but I'm known to break things)
<augiedoggie>
yeah, it works fine for me
<augiedoggie>
kind of a funny little toy, i've never used it before
<OscarL>
dorje's "but it's all messed up" particularly remindsme of some states after installing new filters, and doing "input_server -q"
<augiedoggie>
annoys me that -q doesn't really work for most systems :/
<OscarL>
used to work fine on BeOS, as far as I can recall (worked for me and KeyCursor back in the days).
<B2IA>
(Butler) Welcome to BeShare.agmsmith.ca.
<OscarL>
I guess the interactions between input_server and app_server are not exactly as they were on BeOS (wich makes sense, but yeah... annoying it doesn't "just works")

trim it? ;)

Pretty good. Just setting up haiku on my laptop.
<bcbarnes>
How about you?
<erysdren>
i'm doing good. first time using haiku?
<bcbarnes>
Yes. I downloaded r1/beta 4 about a week ago and have been getting it to boot. Not very straight forward but it is working now.
<erysdren>
glad to have you with us! what do you think of it?
<erysdren>
and yeah, first time setup can be weird
<erysdren>
i've setup haiku dozens of times by now... multiple times on a small number of machines and many many times on virtual machines
<bcbarnes>
I really like it. It has some things I've never seen in other O/S's. It's nice to play with something that isn't just 'more of the same' linux/ms-dos stuff.
<erysdren>
agreed
<erysdren>
i use linux as my "normal" daily driver OS, but i've ported things into Haiku and i test stuff every now and then
<erysdren>
i'm rooting for haiku heavily
<bcbarnes>
I've also downloaded the sources and done a build, and that went well. Hoping to be able to contribute eventually.
<erysdren>
nice!

QuakeSpasm doesn't come with the game data (Quake is still a copyrighted and sold game) but Ken's Labyrinth does
<bcbarnes>
I'll have to check them out.
<erysdren>
too bad Ken's Labyrinth is an annoying game :P
<bcbarnes>
Annoying?
<erysdren>
it's just not a very good game. it's a cartooney first-person-shooter from 1993
<erysdren>
not as good as Wolfenstein 3D in my opinion, which came out the same year
<bcbarnes>
Ah. I have seen Wolfenstein 3D. That takes me back...
<erysdren>
it's very similar to that, but made by just one guy
<erysdren>
i ported it because it's open source freeware now
<bcbarnes>
I may check it out anyway. I can identify with being annoying.
<erysdren>
speaking of which, i need to finish up my Wolfenstein 3D port
<erysdren>
i haven't quite nailed it down yet
<erysdren>
but i really think Haiku needs more games on it
<erysdren>
everyone seems to gauge linux by what games you can or can't play on it with Wine/Proton etc.
<bcbarnes>
Yeah - I think that's because Windows is pretty much the default gaming machine, and linux advocates want to try to get in on the fun.
<bcbarnes>
I have a Windows desktop that is pretty much just for gaming.
<erysdren>
as do i. my partner uses it for playing Red Dead Redemption 2
<bcbarnes>
I'm actually using it right now for IRC. I need to get 'vision' installed on haiku and use that instead.
<bcbarnes>
How is RDR2 - I've been on the fence about trying it.
<erysdren>
well, my partner loves it and has been playing it nonstop for the last few weeks
<erysdren>
it's full of Rockstar-isms, so if you liked GTA5 you'll probably enjoy RDR2
<erysdren>
heavily scripted missions with bullshit fail states, but a really fun open world with good writing and characters
<bcbarnes>
I tried it for just an hour or so. The story seemed to be progressing very slowly, so I got it refunded.
<erysdren>
yeah, the story is whatever
<erysdren>
my partner only plays the story to advance their character upgrades and unlock new locations etc
<bcbarnes>
So you pretty much ignore the story and just wing it, huh?
<erysdren>
well, i've never played it. i just watch them play it
<bcbarnes>
That's what I did with Subnautica.
<erysdren>
but yeah, a lot of people will advise you to play it that way
<erysdren>
just do the story when you *have* to, but otherwise do your own thing
<bcbarnes>
I may give it another try then.
<bcbarnes>
I think it's getting to be lunch time, so I'm gonna disconnect. Thanks for the welcome :)

no problem, nice to meet you
