<waddlesplash> that's fine
<waddlesplash> I think that convenience method is good enough
<waddlesplash> Skipp_OSX: I see you deleted some logic about / in OpenParent. is that really not needed?
<Skipp_OSX> hmmmmmm
_-Caleb-_ has joined #haiku
<waddlesplash> went through the rest, mostly skimming. looks ok, or I trust you know what you're doing at least
<waddlesplash> that's the only part that stood out to me
<Skipp_OSX> well Open Parent works at least in the latest
<waddlesplash> right
<waddlesplash> but this code looks like it's disabling opening the Disks / Root window
<waddlesplash> except if you have Single Window or Show Disks enabled
<waddlesplash> don
<waddlesplash> 't we still need that
<waddlesplash> ?
<Skipp_OSX> yes we still need that AFAIK which PR am I taking it out of?
<waddlesplash> just left a comment at the place it's removed
diver has joined #haiku
<Skipp_OSX> yeah I see now...
<waddlesplash> I also see some places you removed NULL checks?
<Skipp_OSX> I ASSERTed in one patch to take them out...
<waddlesplash> the ASSERT()s are basically never actually built
<waddlesplash> only when you build Tracker in debug mode
<waddlesplash> which it isn't on the nightlies even
<waddlesplash> maybe we should change that idk
<waddlesplash> added 2 more comments
<waddlesplash> I think after that we can merge this

<nephele> hmm
<Begasus> why would you install it somewhere else, it won't be picked up by the system then?
<nephele> what do you mean by "picked up by the system"?
<Begasus> the system won't see it
<nephele> What do you mean by the system?
<Begasus> Haiku/ the package system?
<Begasus> if I would drop a package in ~/destdir is pretty useless
<jmairboeck> you could maybe mount an extra packagefs there and put the package in a packages/ subdirectory
<Begasus> that was my other thought, maybe "install" it to another volume ...
<nephele> Begasus: I really don't understand what you mean by "the system". I can install packages where i want ideally, and for some random app just install the deps in a folder for it
<Begasus> not with pkgman (I think?)
<jmairboeck> nephele: that depends on how the package is built
<Begasus> at least I have never done/investigate that, so clueless
<jmairboeck> you can put any files in any directory structure you want into a package
<jmairboeck> there are just 2 packagefs mountpoints by default, /system and ~/config, and when you put a package in a packages subfolder of that, its contents become visible under the respective mountpoint
<Begasus> maybe there is a third we don't know about jmairboeck :)
<jmairboeck> and in /packages/$packageName-$packageVersion/.self, which is a dynamic symlink pointing to the mountpoint where the package is mounted
<jmairboeck> which allows for location-independent packages, but contains the package version in the path

<Skipp_OSX> you have to go all the way to the screen edge for it to raise but that is normal
<Skipp_OSX> scanty: Is this a new instability or something on your hardware?
<scanty> Skipp_OSX, it's a new instability. beta 4 ran with no problems, same hardware.
mattlacey has joined #haiku
<Skipp_OSX> well Deskbar/Tracker aren't it, must be something kernel related but hard to say what.
<scanty> :(
<Skipp_OSX> I see Desktop didn't start that is bad sign
<scanty> indeed.
<Skipp_OSX> sounds like Tracker is crashing on load, and eventually taking the system down with it.
<scanty> it can crash silently?
<Skipp_OSX> not crash but just not come up.
<scanty> oh
<Skipp_OSX> no icons on Desktop
<scanty> right
<Anarchos> Skipp_OSX i already had this behaviour some months ago. Add to Ctrl+ald+del to launch Tracker on boot
<Skipp_OSX> Tracker can fail to launch and then the launch roster will try to restart it until everything locks up
<scanty> wouldn't i be able to see that in processcontroller?
<Skipp_OSX> yeah Anarchos ran into the bug I've seen it too but usually that's my fault doing something wrong.
<Skipp_OSX> yes see if Tracker threads are running in ProcessController
<Skipp_OSX> Do you have a > Desktop thread?
<scanty> well... if i have to restart the Desktop, wouldn't there be a "> Destkop thread" running?
<scanty> i can check either way.
<Skipp_OSX> there should be yes

<Skipp_OSX> my guess is that the mount server is misbehaving, that would explain how Deskbar and Tracker are both affected.
<scanty> should i try to boot without my usb drive connected?
<Skipp_OSX> If I plug a USB floppy in for example to my system I get what you are experiencing. I assume you don't have that but maybe you have some device plugged in that it can't mount right.
<Skipp_OSX> Yeah see if you unplug the USB if it clears up.
<scanty> ok brb
scantysnax has joined #haiku
<scantysnax> Skipp_OSX, looks like you found the problem
<Skipp_OSX> ok cool, yeah MountServer needs to be in it's own thread so that when it misbehaves like this it doesn't stop the Desktop from loading and Deskbar menu from opening.
<scantysnax> so, is this a proper bug?
<Skipp_OSX> yes, it's been a bug for a while now.
<scantysnax> oh okay.
<scantysnax> so it's happened to others before?
<Skipp_OSX> yeah like I said if I plug a USB floppy drive in this happens to me.
<scantysnax> oh okay
<Skipp_OSX> We could do better at mitigating the issue in Deskbar and Tracker, that's one bug, but then we are getting caught up trying to mount something we can't mount and that's a second bug.
<scantysnax> gotcha, well i'm glad i got things running. the usb drive was a backup of one of my connected hard drives, so no worries, can still access what i need.
<Skipp_OSX> Even if we did mitigate the issue in Deskbar and Tracker it wouldn't solve the problem that it's trying to mount something and failing but at least you could use Deskbar and Tracker in the meantime. Right now when this happens it looks like your whole system is locked. It's not, but Deskbar and Tracker are so you're pretty hosed.
<scantysnax> okay, well i'm going to lay down for a while. the only remaning bug on my list has to do with drive icons
<scantysnax> anyway, bbl

<nephele> are there docs for get_driver_parameter and BSocket somewhere?

<OscarL> Hello Skipp_OSX. Currently testing hrev58265 on 32 bits... so far no Tracker crashes.
<Skipp_OSX> nice nice
<OscarL> Will keep testing a bit more (also on 64 bits, just in case), but after some heavy "right-click-spamming" (on Desktop and non-desktop Tracker views)... seems far more stable. Thank you :-)

<nephele> Does InitCheck for BNetworkAdress return wether the used adress is valid?
<OscarL> Will comment on #15890 after I use that hrev a bit more.
<nephele> seems silly to try and run initcheck later on the BSocket when using udp. there is no "connection" it could verify as beeing there...
<Skipp_OSX> ok sounds good
<Skipp_OSX> I'm pretty sure it's fixed bc I took out the RepopulateMenus() call so there's nothing to crash anymore. I'm not sure why it was needed in the first place and maybe it never was. RepopulateMenus() is only used on Disks, on Volume and Trash so Desktop shouldn't need it.

<Skipp_OSX> Maybe there is something in the menu that isn't getting updated now, but I didn't see anything.

<nephele> I'm not a fan of such opague methods since you never know when they are needed or not
<nephele> same with stuff like updateColors or something like that
<OscarL> Skipp_OSX: so far, haven't noticed anything strange here either, but I will try to be more attentive to possible "outdate" stuff there, now that you mention it.
<OscarL> *"outdated"
<OscarL> nephele: "doStuff()", always a classic.
<nephele> if (from->fFileSystem != to->fFileSystem)
<nephele> return B_DONT_DO_THAT;
<nephele> hehe, nice

<OscarL> "B_DONT_DO_THAT", always one of my favorites.
<nephele> i was looking for an error code indicating network is not connected... but there is none it seems?
<nephele> for new method: syslog_network_output
<nephele> ;)

<OscarL> I remember B_DONT_DO_THAT being used on the regular... on BeShare chat at least (more than in actual code).
<nephele> just gonna return B_BAD_MIME_SNIFFER_RULE when the network is unconnected
<OscarL> lol
<OscarL> (wonder what's BGA is doing these days)
<nephele> running the beshare bridge i think?
<OscarL> that's AGMS
<nephele> ah
<nephele> ENETDOWN
<nephele> hmm
<nephele> can i just pass this as status_t like this?
<nephele> It's in the same range anyhow
<nephele> but no equivalent B_ something named constant
<waddlesplash> all the B_ errors and E* errors are in the same "domain"
<waddlesplash> you can return any of them as a status_t
<OscarL> mmm, idualwifi7260 won't connect no matter why I try (again). Sigh. Guess it will at least make me re-test some usb_rndis related issues :-)
<OscarL> s/why/what/
<nephele> waddlesplash: okay, thanks
<OscarL> It seems to hate my router (even if once in a blue moon, it works perfectly with it), but it is less picky when connecting to some test smartphones hotspots.
