nephele_xmpp -H install to home dir, other then that I wouldn't know
mattlacey has joined #haiku
<nephele>
hmm
<Begasus>
why would you install it somewhere else, it won't be picked up by the system then?
<nephele>
what do you mean by "picked up by the system"?
<Begasus>
the system won't see it
<nephele>
What do you mean by the system?
<Begasus>
Haiku/ the package system?
<Begasus>
if I would drop a package in ~/destdir is pretty useless
<jmairboeck>
you could maybe mount an extra packagefs there and put the package in a packages/ subdirectory
<Begasus>
that was my other thought, maybe "install" it to another volume ...
<nephele>
Begasus: I really don't understand what you mean by "the system". I can install packages where i want ideally, and for some random app just install the deps in a folder for it
<Begasus>
not with pkgman (I think?)
<jmairboeck>
nephele: that depends on how the package is built
<Begasus>
at least I have never done/investigate that, so clueless
<jmairboeck>
you can put any files in any directory structure you want into a package
<jmairboeck>
there are just 2 packagefs mountpoints by default, /system and ~/config, and when you put a package in a packages subfolder of that, its contents become visible under the respective mountpoint
<Begasus>
maybe there is a third we don't know about jmairboeck :)
<jmairboeck>
and in /packages/$packageName-$packageVersion/.self, which is a dynamic symlink pointing to the mountpoint where the package is mounted
<jmairboeck>
which allows for location-independent packages, but contains the package version in the path

in today's update 'make' file did not update?
<Begasus[m]>
"make" file? you mean the makefile-engine?
<san2ban>
usually, haiku loader, webpositive, haiku-development, makefile all get updated
<Skipp_OSX>
OscarL still not around but hopefully bug is now fixed and he can verify that.
<Begasus>
no updates here san2ban, can't check
<Begasus>
but I guess you mean "makefile-engine", think that should be on par with Haiku hrev packages
<san2ban>
yes..that isthe one
<Begasus>
that's up to the big guns :)

well, that was a fun trip to KDL. When I restarted, the Desktop didn't start, I had to Ctrl+Alt+Del to get tracker and desktbar running
<scantysnax>
deskbar*
<scantysnax>
this was also happening in older hrevs (beta5), but the system was too unstable -- about 2-5 minutes before everything stopped working except the cursor

and even then, the stability is another problem.
<Skipp_OSX>
yeah... I'm not sure why it would stop working... just to be safe can you try turning "Show Navigator" on and off again in Tracker settings?
<scanty>
as a stability solution?

my guess is that the mount server is misbehaving, that would explain how Deskbar and Tracker are both affected.
<scanty>
should i try to boot without my usb drive connected?
<Skipp_OSX>
If I plug a USB floppy in for example to my system I get what you are experiencing. I assume you don't have that but maybe you have some device plugged in that it can't mount right.
<Skipp_OSX>
Yeah see if you unplug the USB if it clears up.
<scanty>
ok brb
scantysnax has joined #haiku
<scantysnax>
Skipp_OSX, looks like you found the problem
<Skipp_OSX>
ok cool, yeah MountServer needs to be in it's own thread so that when it misbehaves like this it doesn't stop the Desktop from loading and Deskbar menu from opening.
<scantysnax>
so, is this a proper bug?
<Skipp_OSX>
yes, it's been a bug for a while now.
<scantysnax>
oh okay.
<scantysnax>
so it's happened to others before?
<Skipp_OSX>
yeah like I said if I plug a USB floppy drive in this happens to me.
<scantysnax>
oh okay
<Skipp_OSX>
We could do better at mitigating the issue in Deskbar and Tracker, that's one bug, but then we are getting caught up trying to mount something we can't mount and that's a second bug.
<scantysnax>
gotcha, well i'm glad i got things running. the usb drive was a backup of one of my connected hard drives, so no worries, can still access what i need.
<Skipp_OSX>
Even if we did mitigate the issue in Deskbar and Tracker it wouldn't solve the problem that it's trying to mount something and failing but at least you could use Deskbar and Tracker in the meantime. Right now when this happens it looks like your whole system is locked. It's not, but Deskbar and Tracker are so you're pretty hosed.
<scantysnax>
okay, well i'm going to lay down for a while. the only remaning bug on my list has to do with drive icons
<scantysnax>
anyway, bbl

Hello Skipp_OSX. Currently testing hrev58265 on 32 bits... so far no Tracker crashes.
<Skipp_OSX>
nice nice
<OscarL>
Will keep testing a bit more (also on 64 bits, just in case), but after some heavy "right-click-spamming" (on Desktop and non-desktop Tracker views)... seems far more stable. Thank you :-)

Does InitCheck for BNetworkAdress return wether the used adress is valid?
<OscarL>
Will comment on #15890 after I use that hrev a bit more.
<nephele>
seems silly to try and run initcheck later on the BSocket when using udp. there is no "connection" it could verify as beeing there...
<Skipp_OSX>
ok sounds good
<Skipp_OSX>
I'm pretty sure it's fixed bc I took out the RepopulateMenus() call so there's nothing to crash anymore. I'm not sure why it was needed in the first place and maybe it never was. RepopulateMenus() is only used on Disks, on Volume and Trash so Desktop shouldn't need it.

I'm not a fan of such opague methods since you never know when they are needed or not
<nephele>
same with stuff like updateColors or something like that
<OscarL>
Skipp_OSX: so far, haven't noticed anything strange here either, but I will try to be more attentive to possible "outdate" stuff there, now that you mention it.

you can return any of them as a status_t

It seems to hate my router (even if once in a blue moon, it works perfectly with it), but it is less picky when connecting to some test smartphones hotspots.
