if I wanted to install haiku on a very old computer that has CDs but no CDboot, and I have freeDOS already installed, would I be able to use freeDOS to launch the installer?
<exit70[m]>
you could pull out the hard drive and install elsewhere
<kinkinkijkin>
could not, no other machine with IDE
<kinkinkijkin>
more likely to make a boot floppy
<exit70[m]>
usb ide adapter is a thing :)
<kinkinkijkin>
more expensive than usb floppy drive and less reliable

that’s your call. no issues from my experience. fwiw might as well get an ide to sata/msata adapter so putting the drive in and out would be a breeze

jokes aside. you sure you don’t want to remove the need for cd boot once and for all

Hello everyone. I am new to Haiku and I am trying to develop software in it. Is there something like build-essentials for Haiku which contains all compatible compilers? clang-12 fails to produce programs and gcc-8 fails to install (it complains that mpfr is already installed and does not want to install it again, maybe?). I am trying to learn how to port software.

Was casually chatting with someone earlier about Haiku and the discussion eventually went to how Haiku could do multi-user.
<julicenri>
They were suggesting that Haiku shouldn't have users in quite the same way that other *nix-likes do them.
<julicenri>
Rather, Users would be just for actual people using the system.
<julicenri>
Meanwhile, processes would rely on service contexts.
<julicenri>
A person shouldn't be able to log in as a printer "user".
lelldorin has quit [Quit: Vision[0.10.3]: i've been blurred!]
<julicenri>
The print spooler for example would have a service context that lets it access printers.
<julicenri>
We then proceeded to try coming up with names for these concepts taht would fit in with Haiku.
<julicenri>
*that

User groups for Haiku could be called "Ranks" while "Roles" for service/permission contexts.
bitigchi has joined #haiku
<julicenri>
As in, Users can be appointed a "Rank" to be allowed to access a service under a Role (such as a"dialout" Rank to use TTY devices or launch pppd, etc).
<julicenri>
Those were inspired by the term Teams.
<waddlesplash>
Haiku already has POSIX multiuser, though.
<julicenri>
Yeah, but these were just kind of spitballing how Haiku might handle multi-user when it is exposed in the GUI more extensively.
gouchi has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<julicenri>
The other party didn't just see Haiku using regular *nix-style users in the future, but rather something a little bit different.
<julicenri>
The multi-user discussion sprang from a short argument about whether Haiku is a *nix-like or not.
<julicenri>
(it is)
