waddlesplash: nice, i didn't know about this! thanks. will there be other types of merch available? i really want to buy the actual OS on a usb stick or similar.

has no idea
<waddlesplash>
for beta1 there were DVDs... I don't know if there were for 2 or now 3
<PulkoMandy>
no one made DVDs for beta2 and the marketing team decided to not do it for beta3 either, they think it's not worth the cost
<PulkoMandy>
I still have a stock of beta1 DVDs
<PulkoMandy>
the marketing team is working with freewear to set up a new store but that will not be much different from the cafepress one, just more transparency about how much money goes to haiku

Noticed that the current soft-coded limit inHaiku in 64 CPUs. Wonder if anyone has booted with that before
<waddlesplash>
probably on QEMU but that does not count

Coldfirex, I think 64 core has been booted by bga at least.
<tqh>
I might remember wrong though.
<Coldfirex>
If I could get mouse control working I could throw it on our esxi cluster to test it, but console and vmrc both dont work

<Coldfirex>
and our new blades if we evacuate them I could see how it Haiku behaves with 98 cores and 384gb of memory lol
<tqh>
you can check commit history of that limit. I think it was raised just for the hw. Still might be remembering wrong.
<Coldfirex>
last I saw was 64, but I could be wrong
<PulkoMandy>
it used to be 8 on BeOS and that was changed by Pawel Dziepak (with rework of some structures so that changing it again wouldn't break the ABI)
<PulkoMandy>
BeOS apps can still only see 8 cores
floof58 has joined #haiku
<PulkoMandy>
I don't remember the limit being changed after that, but it easily can be. No ABI changes now when you do that
<PulkoMandy>
so if you have a 98 core machine to test on, maybe it's time to change it :)
<PulkoMandy>
for memory we probably aren't ready to handle this much
<tqh>
512 GB - some, I think.
<Coldfirex>
ya, it will be more of a curiousity test
<tqh>
but probably fine with more as long as you don't use it?
<PulkoMandy>
if you open a bug report and you are willing to test fixed versions, korli might be interested in looking into it
<PulkoMandy>
tqh, no, there are some tricks, at some size you need to use extra levels of indirections in the MMU otherwise the data structures used there just become too large
<PulkoMandy>
actually, I think we already prepare for this and there is a "ignore memory above 512GB" option or something like that in the bootloader
<PulkoMandy>
to avoid needing this
<tqh>
mmu code check is where it says 512GB, but not sure if the actual mapping is done for it
<tqh>
yes I think it will panic if you use it only, as that will map it.
<Coldfirex>
I am willing. Just got to be able to actually install it first. Would be good testing, because Im sure someone will eventually put Haiku only a big threadripper box
<rennj>
You can use VMware Remote Console to access VNC servers, to view and control remote desktops from the command line.
<Coldfirex>
rennj: It was RDP to my work machine then pulling up vcsa\vrmc
<Coldfirex>
Got it going either way
<Coldfirex>
Already found some issues. Only up to 8 vCPUs is stable. 9 boots but hangs once booted. 10+ stops at lit up rocket icon. Memory works (boot wise) until you get above 140GB and then no icons light up
<rennj>
more than 1 cpu in vmware and you get mouse pauses
<rennj>
i run with 2 vcpu and mouse periodically pauses
<Coldfirex>
I'll have to install a nightly, grab some logs and create a couple tickets
<rennj>
drop it to 1 and pauses end..
<rennj>
least for the past couple of years anyway
<Coldfirex>
weird. I havent actually tried using it under esxi yet, just booting etc
<Coldfirex>
w/o tools
<rennj>
doesnt matter with or without
<rennj>
i install the tools anyway cause i want the mouse outside border to go back to my desktop with out having to key combo out of the vm
<rennj>
ctrl+alt to leave the vm
<Coldfirex>
right
<rennj>
eaiser with vmware tools to just edge outside window border
<rennj>
shrink disk and ntp/timessync bonus i suppose
<Coldfirex>
Im surprised 8+ vCPUs didnt work. Does anyone regular run Haiku on a machine with higher than 8 CPUs? If so, maybe its a virtualization thing
<Coldfirex>
nice
<rennj>
i can run it with 4cpu/16GB in vmware
<rennj>
4cpu/4thread amd apu i have
<rennj>
next will be 8cpu/16thread ryzen
<Coldfirex>
nice upgrade
<Coldfirex>
stuff is too expensive right now for me. My home 4/8 works perfect for now
<rennj>
heh $3000 for 286 back in the day
<rennj>
i dont like spending over $1000 for craptop, but if i have to i will
<rennj>
im not going sideways on upgrade..i want more ram and more cores/threads
<rennj>
amd craptop of course, not wintel junk
<rennj>
$1500 for amd ryzen 9 5900hx/hs craptop is the goal anyway
<rennj>
asus has couple to choose from, but i really dont want the nvidia dgpu, when the apu has igpu/vega
<rennj>
35watt part not the 45watt heater so ryzen 9 5900hs/hx one of them is lower watts..certainly not another 15watt cpu

Hmm, just wondering why the link to the Nightlies page on the Beta3 download page is disabled? The comment on the Beta3 page reads "Disabled until we move away from R1/Beta3".
