howdy, is haiku considering changing a bit its window format? Overall, OS is cool but the window format, especially the top bar is a bit confusing.
<HaikuUser>
I was also wondering how could I port a compiler to haiku
<nephele[m]>
HaikuUser: probably not, tabbed windows is an important part of the Haiku GUI, if you want you can read the userguide on how to use them properly :)
<HaikuUser>
OK. but I would make the top bar a bit more self-explanatory, why? because I have to think twice when looking at it, windows/linux/mac in contrast seem to be easier to understand ....
<nephele[m]>
In what way? tabs are pretty established concept
<HaikuUser>
when looking at that square on the left of the window bar, I dont know what I does

Hi what is the good way to connect to a hidden network in Haiku UI without using a terminal?
<scootergrisen>
It seems if i use the network preferences in the GUI that i don't have to option to connect to a hidden network
humdinger has joined #haiku

<scootergrisen>
I use Haiku R1/beta3
<scootergrisen>
It seems it does not work well if i try to change some networks settings in network preferences and leave/join the network so i have to restart Haiku for it to work again
<humdinger>
AFAIK connecting to a hidden wlan can only be done from Terminal with ifconfig
Coldfirex has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<humdinger>
or possibly if you edit /boot/system/settings/network/wireless_networks ?
<humdinger>
dunno
<scootergrisen>
How can i suggest adding option in the network prefecenres GUI so i can select a hidden network there too?
<humdinger>
if there's no ticket for that yet, at Trac

well maybe it does show up in the network list. I see some just called "(WPA2)" but there are multiple

<humdinger>
for sure
<scootergrisen>
is there an option to disconnect from a network in the GUI?
<scootergrisen>
I can deactive the wireless hardware but i can't seem to just leave the network
<humdinger>
I don't think so... never needed that
<humdinger>
deactivating the network sounds like a good alternative

Hmmm sometimes it just keep saying not connected no link and no networks in the list
<humdinger>
depending on the hardware wlan is a bit fickle...
<humdinger>
works nicely for me most of the time.
<humdinger>
after de/activating the interface it may take a few seconds to populate the wlan list.
<scootergrisen>
its just the first thing i want to do so it would be nice for it to work well
<humdinger>
sometimes, it helps if I kill the wpa_supplicant with ProcessController
<scootergrisen>
i see the list after disable/enable but it goes away when i try to connect with ipconfig... which does not connect
<scootergrisen>
lets its stuck in a loop... untill i restart
<humdinger>
maybe the syslog has some hints.
<humdinger>
attach to a ticket, if you file one
<scootergrisen>
next to the deactive button is another button. maybe Renegotiate in english. buts its disbled
<humdinger>
I think that isn't yet implemented...
<humdinger>
yep. it's a // TODO: renegotiate addresses :)
<scootergrisen>
Hm. the syslog file size keeps growing. then if i deactive the wlan it stops growing.

<Coldfirex>
I figured I would look for the different files that specify 128 keys and bump those to 256 to start. I started a little using search tools
<nephele[m]>
That seems a little backwards
<nephele[m]>
there is only one keymap structure that defines this
<nephele[m]>
That has to be changed firstmost, after that the parser of the keymap files can be adjusted to either convert everything in-memory to the new structure, or we keep the code around to handle stuff based on the old format
<nephele[m]>
some code uses the "key_map" struct to pass data around, either we change key_map structure to be 256 characters large, or we define a second structure, and either have seperate functions for it or identify it in the functions for which it matters whether the map is larger or not
<nephele[m]>
this commit tried the aproach of adding a second key map struct
<nephele[m]>
Yeah, those are all correct in needing to deal with the keymaps
<nephele[m]>
the problem is that none of those take into account different versions of keymap files, so if you change those like that we would need to convert all instances in one go to it
<Coldfirex>
is that a big deal?
mmu_man has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<nephele[m]>
Well, depends, whether we need to support version 3 of the keymaps still
<nephele[m]>
and whether we plan to update the format in the future again for some other defects we notice later
<nephele[m]>
it might make sense to have the parser for the disk format atleast stay aware of version3 so it can read it to version4, then the code should be able to use version4 the rest of the time i think
<Coldfirex>
what else would use the old version, beos compatible apps?
<nephele[m]>
I don't know if any of these apis are in the public api, you would have to check, but if they are in the api we would probably be expected to still support it, i guess
<nephele[m]>
the main use case I'd think of would be people having crafted keymaps for their keyboards and expect beta4 to just work with that ;)
<nephele[m]>
I made a note of the error in the ps/2 driver, i still have to revisit it to add the SMS key regardless. I'm going to sleep now, night!
