<OscarL>
just wanted to leave them all more or less in the same state (and with .patchset more similar one to the other).
<OscarL>
Begasus: also... 3.12.5 is still a couple of days away still :-)
<Begasus>
heh
<OscarL>
after that one.... I think I'll *try* updating vbox guest additions, and see how far I go. (had 7.0.4 compiling, but crashing last time... ends of 2022 apparently :-/)
<Begasus>
not an easy one :)
<OscarL>
indeed. patchset 114+ KiB :-/
<OscarL>
"hp --test python3.11" in only 11m55s (VM)... not bad!
<OscarL>
(still won't be using "--with-lto" for the PR, just in case :-D)
<zard>
Interestingly, the domain expired just a few days ago :D
<zard>
But it looks like the guide from cprogramming is pretty good too
<Begasus>
do they have a "for dummies" section too? ;)

hm.
<Nephele>
newer TCP optimizations seem to be quite a bit faster. neat
<Nephele>
1GB in 44seconds, that is not quite full speed for my connection, but vey good considering there are other people on the network
<phschafft>
not sure if I get the artice. but maybe it's a matter of focus.
<zard>
In essence, C++ prefers functions that take rvalue references when a function is passed an rvalue.
<zard>
If the function knows that it is dealing with an object that will disappear soon anyway, it knows that it can be destructive with its use of the object.
<zard>
The idea may be simple, but the use of it in practice gets a bit more complicated... Hence the article
<phschafft>
hm.
<phschafft>
so basically it's a metter of object ownership?
<zard>
Yes
<phschafft>
I often feel like that is a topic is often overlooked.
<zard>
std::move(my_variable) = Here, you may take my_variable. I don't care about it anymore
<zard>
Aye, object ownership... sometimes gets a bit complicated. Always remember: you can always just do reference counting
<zard>
And I think there are garbage collectors available for C++ :P
<zard>
Though, by that point you may as well use Java :P
<Nephele>
Two ":P" in two messages, three and you are out!
<phschafft>
when I talk to people I generally have the feeling that many don't really have an idea about it.
<Nephele>
phschafft: of course i know who owns the objects, me! it's my code after all /s
<phschafft>
em...
<Nephele>
would be funky to have an esoteric language where you need to specify the "license" under which the caller may use your object
<zard>
Another feature to add to that language: permission parameters. If I don't pass you the camera permission, then you can't use the camera!
<zard>
No more supply chain attacks!... kinda
<Begasus>
nice :) grabbing codevis-0.1~git-1-x86_64.hpkg and moving it to /Opslag/haikuports/packages/codevis-0.1~git-1-x86_64.hpkg ... checking

If we had stable support of vmxnet3 drivers (vmware tools) it would be interesting to see how close we could get to 10gb speeds now with the latest changes
<Nephele>
You can also test that in your lan if you have cat 6e cables and network cards
<Coldfirex>
No 10gb at home. At work though, I have 10gb (esxi)

no, haven't prioritized it

do you need it for something?

yeah, I know, just asking :)

nah not really

Two years ago korli provided a test image for me to try on my PC for Intel graphics . I provided data, but never got a response. Does anyone want to have a look now, since we're getting close to another release?
<Vidrep_64>
Coldfirex, I guess that's the test image korli wanted me to test. No word back in 2 years
<zard>
I'm guessing the test image didn't work from the screenshots. Is that right?
<Vidrep_64>
No, it didn't work, from what I remember. The screenshots were using he driver, not the framebuffer, I think
<zard>
So, what could be happening is that the intel driver we have doesn't work for you and so that simple fix doesn't work
<zard>
and korli doesn't really want to spend the time (which could be large) actually fixing the driver
<zard>
Though, of course, that's a guess, and it certainly would be nice to have heard that from korli if it were the case
<Vidrep_64>
Five years ago, when I oped the ticket, the chipset was relatively new, and rudolfc was working on other more common Intel drivers
<Vidrep_64>
*opened
<zard>
I wonder how much progress rudolfc has made on the Intel drivers? Is it working well, only working on a narrow set of drivers, or not working at all?
<Vidrep_64>
I think the work he was doing on Intel graphics at the time was in preparation for an earlier Beta release.
<Vidrep_64>
I haven't seen him active for quite a while
<zard>
heh, haven't seen him around either
<Vidrep_64>
I really haven't been using Haiku much myself lately. The impending release prep for another Beta is what piqued my interest in revisiting some of my open tickets.
<Nephele>
I think beta5 will be quite a lot nicer than beta4 :3

I thought at one point you were using mostly Haiku in general
<waddlesplash>
?

Hi zdykstra
<Coldfirex>
I think PulkoMandy was working on the Intel driver some the last couple of years?
<PulkoMandy>
Yes, whenever I get a new laptop and need to get it working
<Coldfirex>
Makes sense

If it's a simple fix sure. but other than that it doesn't make sense to delay the release for applications that barely work in the first place .-.
<waddlesplash>
I don't know what you mean by "barely work", they work just fine

Anarchos: I could cheakily request you send a patch, but I am interested: what is different to this? is it just a new mapping for standard iso keyboards?

refills the cookie bowl and also adds some maple-walnut schnecken.
<Nephele>
Hmm, it looks like there are additional mode shifts for this new layout (Currency, greek, euro languages) that we can't support with the keymap layout right now :g
<Anarchos>
nephele yes new mapping for french keyboards. More rational than the old one
<Nephele>
Anarchos: are you interested in the base mapping only?
<Anarchos>
yes for the 3 modes
<Nephele>
because I can port that rather easily
<Nephele>
i think the 3 modes requires a bit more engineering
<Anarchos>
nephele don't do it, i never saw one of those keyboards in real life.
<Anarchos>
nephele but i find it more interesteing than my good old 'azerty' ...
<Nephele>
I'm confused :). Aslong as the physical layout is the same you can just use the new layout
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash so how can i debug vsnprintf ?
<Nephele>
maybe even use a couple of stickers
<Nephele>
Do you want me to port the base version?
<waddlesplash>
Anarchos: rebuild libroot in debug mode and step through it I guess...
<Anarchos>
nephele not yet.
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash ah the famous libroot_debug.so :)
<waddlesplash>
no, that's something else
<waddlesplash>
libroot_debug is usually built in release mode, but with more debugging features
<Nephele>
Hmm, i suppose the the 3 layers of addition buttons they can just be send as B_UNMAPPED_KEY (i think) and just not appear in the keymap applications can see
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash ok. I will do that later.
<Anarchos>
time to sleep for me....
<Anarchos>
nephele i have troubles with my french keymap in vim. Anyway i must leave for now.
