<gryfbane_[m]> Is it now OK to upgrade macOs to 12.3.1 ? If I remember correctly, someone on this channel had some issues (like a nice boot loop) after doing it
<kode54> I had no problem with it, at least, but your mileage may vary
<kode54> also remember, the upgrade doesn't touch the OS version of the stub
<gryfbane_[m]> ok great, thanks !

<marcan> if you have an issue it can be fixed, it's just mildly annoying
<marcan> I had it screw up my boot policy
<marcan> need to see if I can reproduce it...
<marcan> there's no problem with the version per se, it's the update process that might screw something up
<marcan> I recommend having the macOS partition as default boot when you do the update

<kode54> I also had an update problem when I tried updating with Asahi as the default
<kode54> but instead, the issue manifest as the update deciding to revert when I rebooted back to macOS
<kode54> I think
<kode54> my memory is fuzzy
<Glanzmann> Strange, I updated three systems (one mini, two air). On all systems Linux was the default.
<Glanzmann> No issues.
<kode54> the only issue I recall having was that it didn't reboot into the updater
<kode54> it rebooted to Asahi instead
<Glanzmann> Strange, for me it updated into macos.
<Glanzmann> kode54: So when I read that there is a new macos update in irc, I usually type 'reboot' and keep the power button pressed which puts me to the boot picker and than I select macos and started the update from there.

<Cy8aer[m]> > but instead, the issue manifest as the update deciding to revert when I rebooted back to macOS
<Cy8aer[m]> Same for me.
<ktz_[m]> anybody having alacritty struggling in wayland as well?
<ktz_[m]> alacritty vs kitty vs foot
<mini> on M1? that's not overly surprising, alacritty is really built for GPU accelerated systems, isn't it?
<mini> and presently m1 on linux is missing h/w accelerated GPU support, so it'll all be being processed in software
<ktz_[m]> maybe you're right but so is kitty afaik
<ktz_[m]> and kitty is supposed to be much slower than alacritty so there is definitely something with it
<j`ey> maybe alacritty is more resource intensive on the gpu than kitty

<j`ey> mps: lets talk here, it's not really -dev worthy
<mps> sure
<j`ey> mps: I compared defconfig (4mins ish) and your asahi config (2m30)
<j`ey> I thought there was something wrong with my setup, but we both got 2m30 with your asahi config
<mps> yes
<j`ey> but ma_z got 2-3mins with defconfig.. so I think alpine is slower than debian for some reason
<mps> but on what machine he runs test
<j`ey> mini
<mps> interesting
<mps> now I'm working on xf86-input-cmt to port for alpine, maybe I will find time in evening to test with 5.18-rc2 defconfig

<Cy8aer[m]> > anybody having alacritty struggling in wayland as well?
<Cy8aer[m]> Works like a charm for me. I have a problem with the dark mode (one x86 system works on x86 not and m1 neither).
<Cy8aer[m]> (dark mode gnome42)
<j`ey> psykose: gawk didn't seem to have a noticable effect

<mps> j`ey: build with 5.18-rc2 defconfig takes real 3m 51.94s with 'busybox time make -j9 vmlinux'
<mps> lets see with mawk
<j`ey> ok, closer to my results then
<mps> if someone could test on distro with glibc then we will know more
<mps> I mean on air or pro
<mps> hm, same with installed mawk => real 3m 51.34s
<Glanzmann> mps: I can test. Are you on 4k or 16k kernel
<Glanzmann> ?
<psykose> the other distros are usually also with lto gcc
boardwalk has quit [Quit: Ping timeout (120 seconds)]
<mps> ohmm it is gawk installed
boardwalk has joined #asahi
<mps> lto is not idea especially for kernel
<psykose> 'lto gcc' refers to gcc
<j`ey> mps: i think psykose means gcc has been built with LTO?
<j`ey> Glanzmann: 16K kernel
<j`ey> Glanzmann: 5.18-rc2 defconfig, make -j9 vmlinux
<mps> j`ey: ahm
<mps> Glanzmann: I'm on 16K and I think j`ey is also

<mps> same speed with busybox awk, and some people argued it is a lot slower than mawk/gawk (not on this channel)
<psykose> on x86 it is
<mps> isn't x86 dead already ;p
<psykose> being like 95% non-mobile marketshare (numbers pulled out of my ass) is not very dead
<mps> good :)

<jannau> more youtube mac studio storage module upgrade drama. nothing to interesting, swapping two 512GB modules works, using two 512GB modules (unknown vendors) in the same mac studio doesn't. not aware of the on package raw nand controllers
