<tpw_rules> chadmed_: but still not a lot in an absolute sense? i'm trying to figure out how to get the speakers to work on this pc laptop
<tpw_rules> actually, maybe i was thinking of povik...
<chadmed_> yeah i still know nothing about how to wrangle it on the kernel level beyond sort of high level generalisations sorry
<tpw_rules> okay, thank you for considering though
<tpw_rules> there is a kernel driver, but i think it needs hacks or configurations for the specific platform

<user982492> nicolas17: Was this already discussed?
<nicolas17> yes but not in a channel with public logs, as I realized later
<user982492> My understanding is applications not designed for TBDR may experience reduced performance, but the rest of the tweet is questionable.

<kprasadvnsi[m]> Hi
<kprasadvnsi[m]> Does Asahi linux work on Apple M1 Mac mini?
<kprasadvnsi[m]> I need a fast arm64 machine to compile and build Arch packages for Arm64.
user982492_ has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<chadmed_> yes
<jannau> yes and it is well supported for that use case
<jannau> the asahi linux reference distro is based on arch linux arm
<kprasadvnsi[m]> Does manjaro-arm-tools work on this OS.
<kprasadvnsi[m]> I was building a Arm64 kernel package on a x86 machine and using QEMU it was painfully slow.
<jannau> note that not all arch linux arm packages work yet since it uses a page size of 16kb
<jannau> using packages compiled on a machine with 16kb page size on a system with 4kb page size should not be problem
<jannau> the inverse it not true
<jannau> you could also use qemu on the M1 to get a standard arm system
<j`ey> qemu on M1 running on top of macOS or Linux

yuyichao_ has joined #asahi
<jannau> just crash dcp but not the actual display controller and you can turn the display off and on (not a serious suggestion)
<kprasadvnsi[m]> Anybody tried compiling linux kernel on apple M1?
<jannau> yes, works but rust support needs a working rustc (the one from arch linux arm is broken since it requires 4k pages)

<bluetail[m]> mps: does mac require secureboot or is that a windows only crap-thing?
<bluetail[m]> cause I cannot boot alpine on my laptop with secure boot locked
<mps> bluetail[m]: what mac?
<bluetail[m]> m1 mac mini
<bluetail[m]> laptop=windows laptop
<bluetail[m]> t490
<bluetail[m]> but it has secureboot forced on. alpine doesnt support secureboot unless you are able to switch it off before deploying the MOK key
<bluetail[m]> * but it has secureboot forced on. alpine doesnt support secureboot unless you are able to switch it off before deploying the MOK
<bluetail[m]> I tried using a shim but it wouldnt work
<bluetail[m]> * laptop=x86 laptop
<mps> bluetail[m]: I don't have experience with secureboot on macs
<bluetail[m]> mps: kinda was not my question. Does alpine require secureboot?
<bluetail[m]> does mac even use it?
<mps> only what i did is install alpine on an old macbook from 2009/10 year
<mps> bluetail[m]: no, alpine doesn't require secureboot
<bluetail[m]> that does mean the boot policy doesnt enforce secureboot and alpine can be installed without
<mps> I think so

<FlorianObradovic[m]> Hey chan. I just wanted to un install Asahi linux from my mbp m1max and followed a youtube guide which basically just removes the three partitions.
<FlorianObradovic[m]> Now the mac won’t boot (exclamation mark and link to support.apple.com/mac/restore is shown)
<mofux[m]> after upgrading from mac os 12.3 to 12.3.1 i can no longer boot my asahi linux (12.3 stub). When selecting it as startup disk it will run into a seemingly endless boot loop (apple logo + progress bar appear for ca 4 seconds, then it reboots)
<mofux[m]> is this a known issue?
<FlorianObradovic[m]> * Hey chan. I just wanted to uninstall Asahi linux from my mbp m1max and followed a youtube guide which basically just removed the three partitions. On removal the whole mac froze on checking some carbon copy cloner snapshots. A real freeze, even the haptic trackpad was dead, so I was forced to power the machine off.... (full message at https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/eJtPvuuanzBUjlcKjvTADhGs)
<nicolas17> diskutil freezing while resizing volumes is unfortunately normal
<nicolas17> probably something got corrupted because of the force-poweroff
<FlorianObradovic[m]> It did not resize. It froze during „checking 1 of 3 ccc (carbon copy cloner) snapshots“…
<FlorianObradovic[m]> The machine was really frozen. I mean, not just the temporary during diskutil work. Everything like the taptic engine of the trackpad was dead
<FlorianObradovic[m]> I just deleted the the three partitions created during install
<nicolas17> I don't know what you did for uninstalling, but during installation that's normal
<FlorianObradovic[m]> I disagree ! I i know what you mean but this was different
<FlorianObradovic[m]> During install the same happened (track pad was physically dead)
<FlorianObradovic[m]> Caps lock led dead, etc
<FlorianObradovic[m]> It was also at the diskutlity step where it checked snapshots
<nicolas17> yes, even the trackpad freezes when diskutil is resizing
<FlorianObradovic[m]> It did not on second attempt when it went through
<FlorianObradovic[m]> I don’t mean pointer freeze. Taptic engine is dead
<nicolas17> *yes*
<FlorianObradovic[m]> Hm 😳
<FlorianObradovic[m]> And it did not come back for 15mins or so, no icmp response

<millenialhacker> We got two distros today, Gentoo and Alpine, that's great :)
