<snek> should the 3.5mm jack work?
<snek> i don't see any devices in pavu
<nicolas17> snek: what chip is your Mac?
<nicolas17> I think 3.5mm jack only works on M1
<snek> its the 16 inch m1
<nicolas17> and not on pro/max
<snek> oh i guess it is the "pro"
<nicolas17> "The headphones jack works on M1 models (M1 Pro and Max models have a new codec chip that isn’t supported yet)."
<snek> yeah
<snek> i didn't realize it was the pro

<sven> yeah, usb3 works. display port and thunderbolt will take longer
<jannau> display port might not that hard but it depends on dcp
<sven> yeah, and I don’t care too much about it so I’m just waiting for someone else to do it :P
hi23 has quit [Quit: Quit]
<sven> dp should “just” be a few dozen dpphy init pokes on the atcphy side
<sven> the rest is DCP then
<jannau> I care about it (my 4k display needs dp for 60 Hz, HDMI is only 30 Hz) but DCP needs work first
<bluetail[m]> macOS: 240hz@1920x1080 on HDMI works

<apetresc1> Hey :) So, I realize that Thunderbolt on M1 Mini isn't supported yet according to the docs, but does anyone have a sense about whether it's "almost there", or still facing huge uncertainty? (My monitor right now has a DP input that I'm using with a Thunderbolt-to-DP cable, trying to decide if I need to switch to an HDMI monitor or I can just wait for Thunderbolt to be ready in Avahi)
<j`ey> apetresc1: somewhere between almost there and uncertainty :p
<apetresc1> Haha great
<apetresc1> So I guess that means not in the next release or two - might as well go HDMI then
<apetresc1> Thanks :)
<sven> what you actually need is dp-altmode fwiw
<sven> that’s easier than thunderbolt but the same reply atill
<sven> *still applies
<apetresc1> Oh I see - as I understood it, dp-altmode is like a "protocol" over thunderbolt, is that accurate? If so, wouldn't the thunderbolt controller also need to work?
<sven> no, dp altmode reconfigures pins on the usb-c port to just talk DisplayPort
<apetresc1> Neat, TIL
<sven> you only need thunderbolt for fancy things like those apple displays

<Vaughn> I installed Asahi on my MBP, and it seems to be working.
<Vaughn> Is it time yet to work on NixOS support?
<Vaughn> Taking that as 'yes'. :)
<tpw_rules> well 'no', it's already done
<Vaughn> That's not the nixos-hardware repo, so it's not quite done.
<j`ey> needs to be upstreamed I guess?
<Vaughn> And probably refactored, yeah.
<tpw_rules> yeah, i was going to do that when a stock nixos installer boots and is at least a bit usable, which will be when more stuff makes it into the kernel
<Vaughn> Documentation needs to be written, the stock installer may need modifications, nixos-generate-config needs updates, so on and so forth.
<j`ey> linux 6.0 :P
<Vaughn> But this is a good starting point. :)
<bluetail[m]> I think I go try again if I can get wine to run on asahi-linux. Last time the patch wasn't merged and so I was stuck at having no 4k kernel and therefore couldnt continue
<bluetail[m]> wine for ARM exists...
<bluetail[m]> Perhaps I just did things wrong idk
<bluetail[m]> Steam does probably not work
<bluetail[m]> I might require to get a gog version of the game I want to play
<Vaughn> There aren't a lot of ARM games, are there?
<bluetail[m]> but I think one of the more annoying things is that display-hotswap or whatever you call it isnt supported
<bluetail[m]> No there arent
qbit has joined #asahi
<qbit> hola!
<bluetail[m]> but you can 1) emulate Linux x86 and 2) you can run wine
<Vaughn> tpw_rules: Yep. I have some interest in that, since I also have a Traverse Ten64 on the way.
<Vaughn> (Which runs UEFI, helpfully.)
<bluetail[m]> that said through parallels on macOS, Noita is too slow
<qbit> has anyone had success "reviving" an mba m1 using idevicerestore?
<tpw_rules> man i love google
<tpw_rules> it's AI garbage says that's $99,971
<tpw_rules> how does it compare to those 16 core honeycomb lx2 things? is the CPU half of that?
<Vaughn> The Ten64? I don't have one yet, so no idea.
<Vaughn> It's all fairly new to me. I just know I'm going to *want* nixos on it.
<tpw_rules> i mean even without benchmarking
<Vaughn> It's a router? The hardware offload is more interesting.
<tpw_rules> ahh
<j`ey> tpw_rules: 8 cortex a53 vs 16 cortex a72
<tpw_rules> everyone's cortex a72s are the same right?
<tpw_rules> qbit: i believe i have a memory that it's happened
<tpw_rules> maybe search the logs?
<qbit> k
<qbit> tpw_rules: http://ix.io/3V9c <-- shell.nix for building the latest idevicerestore stuff on nixos :D
<qbit> hopefully it can be useful to someone else
<qbit> NotProductionReadyTM
<bluetail[m]> liveTheImperfectionAndShipTrash TM
<Vaughn> *Ideally* I'd like Nixos to be upstream of Asahi, but I think Marcan would bap me. :P
<Vaughn> Anyhow, fixing that sort of infrastructure is always interesting. So I'll give it a shot~
<Vaughn> (...after two hundred other side projects.)
<tpw_rules> fixing what sort of infrastructure?
<tpw_rules> and what do you mean by upstream
<Vaughn> Refactoring nixy libraries, etc.
<tpw_rules> qbit: good to know, i'd meant to get around to that at some point
<Vaughn> Well, in principle you can build anything with a nix build. It doesn't need to be nix itself; there's a nix-to-docker library, for instance. You still get all the reproducibility etc. benefits.
<Vaughn> (Works much better than docker-compose, IMO.)
<tpw_rules> oh so you want to scrap all the arch pkgbuild stuff and make nix do it?
<Vaughn> Like I said, I'd get bapped.
<qbit> arc2nix
<qbit> lel
<tpw_rules> i like it. idk why you would write a pkgbuild when you can write a .nix
<Vaughn> But sure. In an ideal future world? Yes, it's so much more maintainable than PKGBUILDs.
<bluetail[m]> Why are the DisplayManagers so damn broken...
<tpw_rules> i'm very proud of the fact that my installer iso is 100% bit reproducible
<bluetail[m]> be it KDE, Gnome or Plasma...
<tpw_rules> (well not if you use btrfs. but the patch is submitted)
<qbit> hm, maybe my usbmuxd stuff isn't working
<Vaughn> I work a fair bit on machine learning. Getting it working at all on nixos is sometimes a struggle, but...
<tpw_rules> then it stays working
<Vaughn> That's true everywhere, really. And at least once it works, it keeps working.
<bluetail[m]> * or Plasma... I keep messing with it till it's correct...
<Vaughn> With e.g. Arch, I need to reinstall the OS when switching models.
<Vaughn> (Yes, there's Anaconda. No, it doesn't cover installing the *exact* CUDA version the model wants.)
<bluetail[m]> Is there kind of a changelog or is it all github commits to look over?
<sven> In an ideal future world there is no asahi distro anymore ;)
<qbit> ERROR: Device did not disconnect. Possibly invalid iBEC. Reset device and try again.
* qbit shakes fist
<bluetail[m]> sven: You say it. Cute Asahi-Lina distrobutions with cute sounds are the way to go :D
<bluetail[m]> s/distrobutions/distributions/
<sven> I look forward to the day I can just grab any random distro and install it
<tpw_rules> ^
<Vaughn> It could be a really good Linux desktop platform.
<tpw_rules> that's also why i decided to make a nixos iso
<tpw_rules> and not an sd image
<Vaughn> I didn't think it could boot off usb, though?
<tpw_rules> u-boot can
<bluetail[m]> Vaughn: I just want three things: Plays Noita/Factorio properly, Plays competetive Tetris clone through WINE properly...
<bluetail[m]> I don't want to spend my money on buying outdated tech just for those things haha...
<tpw_rules> the rom firmware can't
<Vaughn> bluetail[m]: Well, um, those are all x86 games. So...
<Vaughn> You can play ... Nethack!
<bluetail[m]> Vaughn: those games are for fun but my ultimate goal is to develop my mental abilities. Tetris is mostly just socializing... Noita is more about planning / pathfinding / organizing and taking the least risk / best options in the shortest amount of time.
<Vaughn> I've never gotten beyond the spiders. :/
<bluetail[m]> I want to be able to love myself :D
<Vaughn> It honestly is the enormous x86 game library that's the biggest issue.
<Vaughn> Maybe Valve will implement a better recompile?
<bluetail[m]> Vaughn: Wait till you are polymorphed by 1 pixel of polymorphium or cause you accidentally launch a rocket with piercing and its stuck in one pixel - then you walk in and you are dead immediately
<qbit> mm, apparently 12.3 (and maybe 12.3.1) won't restore, gonna try 12.2.1 \o/
<bluetail[m]> Vaughn: The base game runs only on Windows and with SteamProton on Linux (fluidly). The base game is already very CPU demanding and probably not very optimized
<Vaughn> Yep.
<Vaughn> In fairness, it's a falling sand game. Those are *always* CPU demanding.
<Vaughn> ... huh. I asked an AI to create the logo for "Morning Dawn Linux".
<Vaughn> It did much better than expected.
