<kode54> where did I hear about a m1n1 update? I guess it doesn't apply to anything but the M1 Ultra?
<jannau> only m1 ultra or development related changes (faster hypervisor). also preparation for usb3 support but that is going to to be changed
<marcan> it's not released as a package or anything yet
<nicolas17> marcan: fun fact I discovered today, the USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable has updateable firmware
<nicolas17> probably via the PD pins

<asahi-test[m]> I want to try to convert EXT4 partition to BTRFS on the asahi install and since it is mounted i will need to boot from USB on a macbook air M1. Is there a guide or something to make the USB boot drive to test this?
<asahi-test[m]> I am not worried about the data or if anything goes bad, nothing important there.
<asahi-test[m]> Thanks
<tpw_rules> you can just dd the image to a usb stick really
MajorBiscuit has joined #asahi
<asahi-test[m]> tpw_rules: Thanks, and what image would be appropriate?
<tpw_rules> the one that's on your disk right now
<asahi-test[m]> asahi-test[m]: i tried with a SD card and did not work as usual
<tpw_rules> sd cards won't work.
<asahi-test[m]> tpw_rules: ah right, good. Normal usb stick are more likely to do it. I see.
<asahi-test[m]> So the partition to dd onto the USB would be the EFI ?
<tpw_rules> no, just the rootfs
<mps> you can find even usb disk image there or make your own
<asahi-test[m]> mps: thanks, mps that was the one i tried, but on SD card, will retry.
<asahi-test[m]> tpw_rules: ah right right good
<mps> asahi-test[m]: ah, yes
<asahi-test[m]> mps: BTW i am testing also alpine and reading about it. This past week with pinephone 64 and postmarket and it is working very well.
<asahi-test[m]> asahi-test[m]: sorry for the off-topic
<mps> asahi-test[m]: nice. and it is not OT imo
<asahi-test[m]> mps: i mean it had manjaro with gnome and it was kind of frustrating to try to share the net from the SIM to the wifi of mb air M1. Postmarket did the thing and they update every week. Got it to work right after flashing the SD card that fits internally. After made a proper install. Very quick and solid user experience
<tpw_rules> oh, maybe the sd card will work. sorry if i misled you
<tpw_rules> i didn't think u-boot could read them
<asahi-test[m]> asahi-test[m]: anyway, i had to disable any power related features just turning the screen off on the button. PostmarketOS is still alpha also. Overall i am very happy with the choice. I have both OSes manjaro still on the internal disk and pmOS on the fast sd card.
<mps> asahi-test[m]: if you use kernel I made for alpine maybe sd card doesn't work, I didn't checked this
<mps> I mean, sd card internal in some machines
<asahi-test[m]> <asahi-test[m]> "BTW i am testing also alpine and..." <- the only issue is for example not having signal or other software that one uses, hence the need to have a qemu vm with debian where all of that works out of the box
<mps> sd card in usb adapter work but is seen as usb device by kernel
<mps> I think alpine have some signal software
<asahi-test[m]> mps: well that would be great, along with torbrowser
<mps> and alpine edge is some kind of 'rolling release', updated daily because it is where development is done
user982492_ has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<mps> asahi-test[m]: tor browser will not work on musl libc systems because it is built with glibc
<asahi-test[m]> mps: i do not have yet a usb C key, will it work on a normal usb 2 connected to the satechi multiport thing?
<mps> asahi-test[m]: have no idea what is 'satechi multiport'
<mps> for me it works on two usb-c hubs and on simple usb-c to usb-a adapter
<asahi-test[m]> mps: great that will do the trick i think
<asahi-test[m]> mps: thanks
<mps> ah, it is hub. if linux and u-boot could recognize it then it should work
<asahi-test[m]> <asahi-test[m]> "i mean it had manjaro with gnome..." <- not gnome, sorry it was kde...
<asahi-test[m]> OK guys, thanks for all the info, will try and give feedback on the experience
<asahi-test[m]> sorry, just to be sure, that would be the first one with 500MB?

<mps> asahi-test[m]: what lsusb says when you plug hub
<asahi-test[m]> oh sorry this is the hub that came with the pinephone
flex has quit []
<asahi-test[m]> the satechi says this
<asahi-test[m]> asahi-test[m]: interestingly it has old usb ports, a keyboard port, a hdmi and an rj45
<mps> aha, I have also `VIA Labs, Inc. USB Billboard Device`
<mps> so your one should work
<asahi-test[m]> mps: ahahaha
millenialhacker has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<asahi-test[m]> good i am finishing the download of the img
<mps> but I noticed some newer usb stick don't boot with my hub, but older ones does
millenialhacker has joined #asahi
<mps> these new ones are not detected by u-boot
<asahi-test[m]> asahi-test[m]: on the SIM with 4G i get normally 1.5 - 2 Mbps after hours and during the day. But when people get out of work ... pfff it really slows the show down...
<asahi-test[m]> mps: i was planning to plug it directly on the mac
<asahi-test[m]> with nothing else connected there
<mps> asahi-test[m]: you have sd card adapter in m1?
<mps> let me check kernel, did I added sd card in kernel or as module
<asahi-test[m]> mps: no, this would be last case scenario if nothing works, after buying the usb c
<asahi-test[m]> stick
<mps> ah, ok
<mps> then it should work
<mps> and i noticed now that I build kernel with CONFIG_MMC=m

<ChaosPrincess> the "satechi" hub exports the sd reader as a usb mass storage, not as sd
<ChaosPrincess> so you dont need config_mmc
<asahi-test[m]> ChaosPrincess: OK great
<asahi-test[m]> i will try with both, then get back
user982492 has joined #asahi
<ChaosPrincess> Btw, all those hubs are just fancy rebrands of random $10 aliexpress stuff, and the chips inside are also pmuch same
<asahi-test[m]> ChaosPrincess: but in any case, might not boot from it, no? I couldn´t two days ago.
<ChaosPrincess> I have the "oem" aliexpress version and it boots from that
<asahi-test[m]> ChaosPrincess: well two extra advantages
<asahi-test[m]> asahi-test[m]: price & function
<ChaosPrincess> Nah, oem
<ChaosPrincess> version is literally same chassis sans the logo
<asahi-test[m]> i went for the satachi because usb has known problems
<asahi-test[m]> but if the chips are the same... It's just waste
<mps> ChaosPrincess: hm, let me try will my boot from mmc
<ChaosPrincess> If its a usb over mmc, its usb mass storage, the internal port in 14 inch mbps i think is mmc
<asahi-test[m]> asahi-test[m]: sometime it turns into "badusb" 😁
<asahi-test[m]> s/sometime/sometimes/
<mps> ChaosPrincess: yes, it boot from it
<mps> it is seen as sdb
ciggi has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<asahi-test[m]> mps: but on mb air or mini?
<asahi-test[m]> asahi-test[m]: would it be different?
<mps> asahi-test[m]: on mb pro, but I think it should work on all
<asahi-test[m]> mps: OK
<asahi-test[m]> 3 minutes left...😁
<mps> asahi-test[m]: you must be on slow link
<mps> I tried to make this disk as small as possible
<asahi-test[m]> mps: yes on 3G ( prime time for facebook etc )
<mps> disk image*
<asahi-test[m]> mps: yes great thanks. After 11PM the link speeds up considerably to normally 1.5-2Mbps
<mps> maybe zstd would be better than xz to compress it
<asahi-test[m]> asahi-test[m]: just until like 6pm next day. This happens in several countries.
<asahi-test[m]> finished...

<asahi-test[m]> <mps> "asahi-test: tor browser will not..." <- well there is a new rust service api that exposes the functionality
<mps> on alpine one can run tor gateway and use it as proxy for browser, though i think this doesn't count as tor-browser
<asahi-test[m]> <mps> "on alpine one can run tor..." <- nice, but the headers would be there
<asahi-test[m]> i do not have experience with u-boot, i might be doing something wrong. Am i supposed to do something before the grub menu to change the boot to the sda?
<asahi-test[m]> asahi-test[m]: i was checking here https://www.linuxjournal.com/content/handy-u-boot-trick and seems one has to read...
<asahi-test[m]> asahi-test[m]: there is a recent fingerprinting method that uniquely identifies browsers via js
<mps> asahi-test[m]: yes, I wrote in guide that u-boot must be 'stopped' by pressing enter key when it count timeout

<rkjnsn> Not a separate one, but you can join the IRC channel using the OFTC Matrix bridge.
<rkjnsn> https://matrix.to/#/#_oftc_#asahi:matrix.org
<nicolas17> they did that already, hence [m] :P
<nicolas17> I think a matrix "space" is like a grouping of rooms so you can discover them and switch between them easily
<rkjnsn> Ah. I use the Matrix bridge myself, so I don't see the [m].

<asahi-test[m]> <mps> "asahi-test: yes, I wrote in..." <- Everything worked fine. However i was thinking about configuring an image with tools needed and that could also be updated. Saw a script on github of about 300 lines that does that for alpine. Will look into it.
