<PixFrom13>
Hi from a newly installed f39/asahi on a m1 macbook air :)
<j`ey>
PixFrom13: ^_^
<PixFrom13>
it's struggling a bit but still impressive
<j`ey>
PixFrom13: what exactly is struggling?
frekkson has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<PixFrom13>
the display, because i plugged it on a DisplayLink dock which is a proprietary solution that if i understood well create a gigantic framebuffer, and expose it as multiple screens to the OS
<PixFrom13>
i effectively have 2 1080p hdmi screens alongside the Macbook
<PixFrom13>
On top of that i encrypted all the filesystem so i guess it's taking a small toll too
<PixFrom13>
but the only real "issue" is that audio is very, very choppy, on a confcall i can either see the presentation, ot have the audio, but not both :))
<j`ey>
ah, well yeah, I think that's just going to be pretty slow cos of USB etc
<PixFrom13>
workaround for now is tu use audio from my phone, i can live with that
<j`ey>
(Im not sure if display link uses the GPU?)
<PixFrom13>
it does, i have glmark2 pretty smooth ( not as much as a single display), but the big framebuffer may stretch the abilities of the gpu
<PixFrom13>
at least it's how i read the drop of performance
<j`ey>
when USB C displays work, that should hopefully get better
<PixFrom13>
yes i'll switch to a more standard dock :)
<PixFrom13>
but displaylink is a lifesaver in the meanwhile
<j`ey>
PixFrom13: have you tried the displaylink thing on another computer?
<PixFrom13>
yes, on my previous laptop, a ryzen 5700u, works with no issues/lags
<j`ey>
I see
<PixFrom13>
fedora 39 too so comparable
<j`ey>
audio isnt choppy in general, so some issue with that confcall (or maybe high load due to the displaylink..?)
<PixFrom13>
i think it's the load on the usb-c port
<PixFrom13>
youtube also have choppy audio
<j`ey>
check CPU usage, try without the displays attached etc
<PixFrom13>
Yup i will
<PixFrom13>
right now i'm trying to play with ionice/renice on the audio subsystem ( the userland part) to try to smooth things over

<PixFrom13>
cpu is not higher than 8-9% though it may be the bandwidth of the usb-c port that is struggling ( i have the 2 screens, ethernet, keyboard/mouse on it )

thanks :)

<PixFrom13>
had some issues when encrypting the disk, but the standard install in itself went flawlessly :)
<ydalton>
i'd personally like an external display on my m2 air but i don't know anything about displaylink
<PixFrom13>
only issue was with mkosi 15.1, had to upgrade to 19
<PixFrom13>
Otherwise there were a strange permission error when trying to create the EFI boot partition
<ydalton>
that looks almost a year old, before fedora asahi was even announced to the public
<PixFrom13>
displaylink was just dumb luck, i have a few docking station @work from lenovo/dell, saw the displaylink sticker on one of them, looked into it and saw someone on asahi reporting a sucessfull usage
<PixFrom13>
look at the end
<PixFrom13>
"Updated on Oct 14, 2023 to use official Fedora Asahi Remix installer and bring use of recovery drive for encryption setup up to date."
<ydalton>
that's a really bad spot to put an "updated thing"
<ydalton>
you'd usually put at right at the top, but anyways
<ydalton>
i wonder about SEP support, it's probably really low on support since it's not necessary
<ydalton>
*low on the list of priorities
<PixFrom13>
SEP ?
<ydalton>
secure enclave processor
<j`ey>
allows touch ID and other stuff like that
<PixFrom13>
ah ok
<ydalton>
and disk encryption iirc
<ydalton>
like hardware based disk encryption
<ydalton>
iirc, the only use of it is in m1n1 to use its TRNG api, but that's about it

pretty much, it’s used to generate entropy for the kernel
mohit8158226 has joined #asahi
<sven>
that’s still inside the SEP bootrom
<j`ey>
pretty nice of them to expose that for us :P
<sven>
there was also a bit of reverse engineering of the actual sepos ipc but that‘s still in the very early stages
<sven>
yup :D
<sven>
I guess it’s also somehow used early in the boot rom

the whole thing is <100 lines of code iirc
<nicolas17>
different protocol than all the other sep thingies?
<sven>
it's still inside its boot rom
<sven>
the protocol there is very very simple
<sven>
iirc it's just a single command with a single reply to get 32bits from the hardware rng
