<xrisk_> Hi all, I just installed the minimal version and it’s really not my cup of tea. Is there a meta package I can install to switch over to kde plasma?
<chadmed> dnf install @plasma-desktop will sort you out i think
<xrisk_> No luck, module or group isn’t available.
<chadmed> oh its @kde-desktop sorry
<xrisk_> Thank you! I think that worked :)

<ouzel8> Hi everyone!
<ouzel8> I indicated some power consumption issues recently.
<ouzel8> I seek some advice on resolving this issue.
<ouzel8> I have observed significant power consumption for minimal usage, in comparison with Mac OS.

<odlg> Hi
<odlg> I just installed Fedora Remix on a M2 Pro. Impressed by what just works. Chromium from flatpak currently fails with:
<odlg> [2:2:1230/181005.178181:ERROR:gpu_process_host.cc(992)] GPU process exited unexpectedly: exit_code=139
<odlg> Is that a known issue?
<j`ey> flatpaks dont include the right GPU drivers
millenialhacker has joined #asahi
<j`ey> but I would have possibly expected it to fallback, I thought I used to see that error before I had GPU working, cant remember
<odlg> Just installed it via dnf and now it works, thanks!

<Stonecutter> Hi
<Stonecutter> Is this the right channel to ask a question about Asahi Linux?
<nicolas17> yes
zumi_ has joined #asahi
zumi has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Stonecutter> I have a Mac Mini M2 Pro and it appears that the 'TBA' tags are no longer showing on the Wiki. Does this mean it is fully supported now? All I see is 'asahi-linux' tags.
<nicolas17> no mac is "fully" supported (eg. the SEP and the microphone aren't supported yet), so it depends on what features you need
<Stonecutter> Hmmm. So what does 'fully supported' mean or not mean in the context of Asahi Linux?
<nicolas17> I don't know, the wiki doesn't use that term :P
<tdr> Stonecutter, some of it is "linux wide" and not one distro.
zumi_ is now known as zumi
<Stonecutter> @tdr, I'm not sure I follow
<Stonecutter> Is Asahi in a different state then the last time I checked it a few months ago? Is it not bound to Fedora anymore? Now can use more distros?
<nicolas17> that was the case months ago too
<tdr> Stonecutter, pick "the mic" for example, its not a distro not support it, its that "under linux its not there"
<nicolas17> "Is it not bound to Fedora anymore? Now can use more distros?" this page was created in july 2022: https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/Installing-Gentoo-with-LiveCD
<nicolas17> what distro do you want? :)
<Stonecutter> EndeavourOS
<j`ey> you have to package a bunch of stuff for a distro to work
<Stonecutter> Ideally what I am hoping for is to install EndeavourOS with ease and also delete macOS entirely. Not sure if thats possible yet
<j`ey> no you need to keep macOS for now
<Stonecutter> Oh really. I see
<Stonecutter> At least you said 'for now'..... so theres hope :)
<nicolas17> it's up to EndeavourOS maintainers to package asahi's kernel, mesa, asahi-audio...
<j`ey> at least they claim to support armv8!
<nicolas17> where the feature support list says "linux-asahi", it means the upstream Linux kernel does *not* support that feature yet, you need asahi's own kernel fork
possiblemeatball has joined #asahi
<Stonecutter> I see
<nicolas17> although that brings questions... j`ey any idea why stuff like "macbook air 15-inch devicetree" is still not upstream? just waiting for a release?
vadorovsky has joined #asahi
<j`ey> nicolas17: maybe not even sent
<j`ey> not much use to just the DT upstream
<j`ey> also iirc that was a later model than the other m2 ones, which were all sent at the same time

<nicolas17> are Wi-Fi chips on Macs fullmac or softmac?
<j`ey> theyre brcmfmac.. so full?
<sven> fullmac
<nicolas17> I guess that means AWDL *necessarily* has to be implemented in the firmware, at least partially
<j`ey> config BRCMFMAC: tristate "Broadcom FullMAC WLAN driver"
<sven> doesn’t the firmware contain strings that refer to AWDL anyway?
gspbirel56 has quit [Quit: Ping timeout (120 seconds)]
gspbirel56 has joined #asahi
<nicolas17> it does, but that could be offloading for power saving or something, I'm saying on fullmac it *can't* be implemented without firmware help
<sven> I don’t have any idea how AWDL works but that sounds true since I assume it’s some kind of peer to peer protocol
<nicolas17> it involves vendor-defined Wi-Fi data and action frames
<nicolas17> which can probably be implemented in the kernel for softmac devices
<nicolas17> since the kernel is parsing the regular data frames anyway
<PaulFertser> There's a fully userspace implementations for cards which support active monitor mode: https://github.com/seemoo-lab/owl
<sven> oh, right, totally forgot about monitor mode
<PaulFertser> And fullmac devices can support monitor mode with some convincing https://github.com/seemoo-lab/nexmon
<PaulFertser> (probably a good project for someone interested in RE to try to add support for macs to nexmon)
<sven> the bluetooth firmware looks like it has some kind of code signature fwiw
<sven> dunno if the wifi firmware is the same
<sven> or if that thing even was a code signature

<nicolas17> PaulFertser: yes, but if you put it in monitor mode then you can't connect to an access point
linuxgemini has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<PaulFertser> nicolas17: on mac80211 monitor mode interface can always be created in addition to existing running VIFs, so it's not a general rule. Probably true for nexmon-patched brcmfmac devices, no idea.
<nicolas17> oh, interesting
<nicolas17> but yeah if you're on mac80211 you could also... implement awdl in mac80211 and let it coexist with the normal mode :D
elvishjerricco has joined #asahi
<PaulFertser> nicolas17: not sure if it's really possible for most cards if AWDL requires some channel hopping as most cards only support working on single channel.
<nicolas17> so does the chip Mac uses, single channel at a time... it just has to be able to switch channels "fast enough" :D
<nicolas17> "The reason why Apple prefers EAWs might have to do with the time that is required to perform a channel switch operation in the Wi-Fi chip. We found that a channel switch operation takes at least 8 ms (≈ 8 TU) using dump chanswitch of the wl utility." (from the first paper reverse-engineering AWDL, https://arxiv.org/pdf/1808.03156.pdf#page=13)
<sven> someone who enjoys pain could also reverse engineer the AWDL firmware protocol and add support to brmcfmac :p
<kaazoo> Hi, does anybody here have working speakersafetyd on j414?
<kaazoo> I get this error during startup: speakersafetyd[4286]: thread 'main' panicked at 'Could not lock elem Left Woofer 1 VSENSE Switch. alsa-lib error: Error("snd_ctl_elem_lock", ENOENT)', src/helpers.rs:172:13
<sven> then you at least get support on Apple silicon machines
<nicolas17> sven: that's probably the only way to do it on Apple Silicon yes
<j`ey> kaazoo: are you using fedora?
<nicolas17> but I have never reversed that kind of thing and I have no clue how brcmfmac works for normal connections >.>

<kaazoo> j'ey: No Ubuntu Asahi, with updated packages for the speaker support. Does that ENOENT error mean that macaudio doesn't enable the speakers?
