hi everyone i hope you're all doing great
<titi>
I would have a question as a non-expert and I know it may have been asked quite a few times already, so please forgive me if I am asking the obvious ... I have installed the Fedora/Asahi on a external NVMe drive and am now missing the booking part.
<titi>
What would be the needed step to be able to boot on the external SSD ?
<titi>
If any page I can get redirected to, please drop me the link I'll do the reading

titi: have you run the asahi installer to at least create a UEFI env?

<j`ey>
how did you create an external disk?

j`ey : yes the SSD is ready - I used the fedora-asahi-usb project - it got me the 3 needed partitions as I wanted them on the SSD
<titi>
(sorry for the delayed response, working at the same time)
<titi>
I should have provided the info in the question ...
<j`ey>
titi: ok, well you need to run the asahi-installer still
<j`ey>
the macs cant natively boot from usb
<titi>
what a pitty - i guess it's for security purpose
<titi>
I dig into this then - how the installer is doing the trick - is it installing a roper boot loader ?
<j`ey>
yup
<j`ey>
the UEFI option installs u-boot, which can boot from USB
<j`ey>
note that currently suspend will break when booting from USB

I get it - many thanks for pointing me out ton the right direction
<titi>
I would have another question though ... is there any PC that would has the M2 performances I can run Linux on ?
<titi>
I am not a Mac person, but got one for couple of months and I admit that it's a very nice machine

titi: i heard that modern amd chips have pretty good efficiency too
<kidplayer666>
framework seems a reasonable choice if you have the cash to spare and they have your keyboard layout :P
<kidplayer666>
they do have native linux support if im not mistaken and do cooperate in making sure some distros work well
<kidplayer666>
though i would search for reviews as i personally do not have one

Also, they’re really cool as they have modular ports that you can replace at will (essentially built in usb c adapters) and they’re readying up to release a laptop with detachable graphics!

kidplayer666: is there any company producing attachable graphics ? So there is something you can attach when you detach ? :)

<kidplayer666>
as400: they only have a single module scheduled for release now, but the standard apparently is open
<kidplayer666>
So anyone could conceivably make them
<kidplayer666>
And it could be used for stuff like extra storage, or extra IO, etc
<kidplayer666>
They have a reasonable track record with the IO modules, so my hopes are fairly up for the “expansion bay”
<kidplayer666>
Oh yeah, and they’re suuuuper repairable
<as400>
kidplayer666: asking because if only framework will produce them, Then you're in another vendor lock-in.

<ChaosPrincess>
if you are buying one now, you are buying a gen 1 product, with all the implications
<ChaosPrincess>
nobody else is making those (yet?)
<j`ey>
like M1 :P
<ChaosPrincess>
i'd say m1 mbp and mba are very much gen 1 products
<kidplayer666>
as400: yep
<kidplayer666>
That’s the price of living on the edge
<kidplayer666>
At least it’s sick, that same 16 inch laptop with the removable graphics also has a configurable num pad/ macro pad/ led matrix
<ChaosPrincess>
Wait, one of the modules is gamer lights? If so - lol.

There was whole bunch of companies trying to set their own standards. Well, I wish them luck anyway.
<as400>
And lets hope one of these days they will have a proper, beefy ARM laptop :)
