<_aph> Hi, people! I want to replace the old Arch linux install with Fedora. DO I just run the fedora install script, or do I have to do anything to remove Arch first?
<_aph> I guess this is a common FAQ, but I see various answers
<ChaosPrincess> back up all your arch data, nuke it by following this guide https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/Partitioning-cheatsheet , install fedora
<_aph> ChaosPrincess, thx
<eiln> ChaosPrincess: the first thing I do on a fresh macOS install is remap caps to esc
<eiln> also ctrl to command, whatever that's called
<eiln> even funner, the j293 Korean keyboard layout doesn't even have a backtick. we have a stupid ₩ under tilde instead. I can't type j`ey lol
<ChaosPrincess> eiln: one of the languages i speak does not use latin script, so for me caps lock is kb layout switch
yamchah2_ is now known as yamchah2
<ChaosPrincess> and im too used to "mac-style" cmd position (guess i was weird in that my first computer was a mac and not a windows machine)

<bluetail> ChaosPrincess I use en-US even though I am natively german just because it's easier to use for me... brackets are closer to each other and so on. Just can't use Umlauts
<j`ey> eiln: [OFTC] -!- j₩ey Erroneous Nickname
<j`ey> :'(
<ChaosPrincess> for german en-us works pretty fine and ä on mac is alt-u, a
ydalton has joined #asahi
<eiln> heh
<eiln> my layout switch is option. hangul isn't latin at all, so I never need diacritics/umlauts and whatnot
<ydalton> i kinda like the extra layout with the mac keyboard, but hate the fact it's always mapped to alt/option. linux does it great, altgr brings up the extra layout

<j`ey> hm, speakersafetyd doesnt start for me anymore
kidplayer666 has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
<PaulFertser> What does "journalctl -u" and "systemctl status" for it say?
<j`ey> im going to reboot a few more times, it does sometimes show up. showed up on that boot, trying again
<PaulFertser> For troubleshooting it's of course better to not reboot.
<j`ey> I mean, neither of those commands show much because it didnt start :)
<PaulFertser> (unless it showed up ok)
<PaulFertser> It's essential too!
<PaulFertser> If those commands do not show it even trying to start then it's a question of what prerequisites it's missing.
<PaulFertser> So, again, better to not reboot and to inspect the state of its dependencies.
<j`ey> going to reboot until it doesnt show up. I think it's somehow related to the battery charge udev rule I added
<j`ey> speakersafetyd is started by a udev rule
<j`ey> https://termbin.com/h3vu for systemctl status
<j`ey> journalctl shows no entries for this boot
<PaulFertser> Hm, strange it's "disabled" as if you run "systemctl disable speakersafetyd.service" somewhere.
<j`ey> doesnt disabled just mean not started by default?
<PaulFertser> Are you running systemctl with root permissions when getting status and logs?
tretinha has joined #asahi
<PaulFertser> But it is supposed to be started by default, it should be part of "multi-user.target" no?
<PaulFertser> If you want to run it from a udev rule then yes, you need to have it disabled and started from a rule.
<j`ey> that's what should be happening
<j`ey> and no, not running systemctl as root
<PaulFertser> But then it's a question of whether you have "pcmC*D2c" created at all.
<PaulFertser> Probably makes sense to run "udevadm monitor" and then in another console "modprobe -r snd-soc-macaudio; modprobe snd-soc-macaudio" or something like that.
<j`ey> yeah, even when the daemon didnt load, I had some pcmC* files in sysfs
<j`ey> and can't remove the module, it's in use
<j`ey> trying to reboot into a non working state again, trying for the 4th time..
<j`ey> damnit, even when the daemon doesnt start, it says snd-soc-macaudio is in use :/
<PaulFertser> Probably it's getting used by pipewire right away? And before you stop pipewire you can't unload the module?

<cy8aer> Has anyone discovered any new bugs in 14.1.2, or is it safe to update (from 14.1.1)?
<j`ey> ok wtf, journal -u systemd-udevd is.. confusing. it seems like it doesnt do *anything* in the case the speakers dont work
<j`ey> ok, the snd-soc-macaudio and tas etc modules are not possible to probe twice, got a splat while trying that
<j`ey> I only once managed to get verbose logs with udev_log, seems like it's ignored every other time ive passed it :/

<janneg> holiday: which device? you can probably restore by either repeating step2 of the install or using the installer in recovery mode to "repair" the 1st stage m1n1
<holiday> janneg: m1 macbook pro
<holiday> base 13 inch
<janneg> it appears that macos updates sometimes invalidate the custom boot object on other installations
<janneg> we have no idea why that happens
<holiday> damn
<holiday> how do i repeat the step 2 of the install tho

<kidplayer666> Saw some story online
<j`ey> yeah I know the story :)
<kidplayer666> Ah nice
<kidplayer666> Not the only one who heard it then
<janneg> holiday: the step2.sh remains on disk in "Finish Installation" but using repair from the installer is the safer/easier option

<chadmed> j`ey: can you check dmesg for any sound related errors
<chadmed> (on a boot where it fails to start)
<j`ey> I hadn't noticed anything, will double check
<j`ey> the pcm* stuff still appears in /sys etc
zumi has joined #asahi
<j`ey> yeah, nothing that I can see
<j`ey> I ran 'systemcl start speakersafetyd', and my speakers work fine
<j`ey> I then stopped it, and udevadm trigger.. then systemctl status speakersafetyd showed it has started
<j`ey> I don't know exactly when the udev rule should fire, but part of me feels like it's a race to when the sound module loads vs when the nvme is
<j`ey> or related to pipewire/wireplumber somehow
<chadmed> it should trigger waaaaay before pipewire/wireplumber start
<j`ey> I see
<j`ey> Im confused because I thought markan said it was only meant to run if stuff was being played, but I guess it's just always meant to run?
<j`ey> so maybe fixed in the 6.6 kernel when that's out. not sure what fix markan was referring to

<roy> Using Fedora Remix, is there anyway to enter some sort of a Linux recovery mode (which I will have a terminal, but prior to graphics initialization) ? Can't switch language input - and the password is in English, so I'm just locked out (Using CTRL+ALT+F1/F2 to get into terminal after graphics still has the same issue of language input...) Thanks!
<chadmed> j`ey: it's always running in the sense that it is in memory but it's not modelling the speaker temp or whatever unless stuff is playing
<chadmed> when nothing is playing it's basically just keeping the v/isense pcm open so that the kernel doesnt apply the failsafe limits
<j`ey> chadmed: right, I misunderstood and thought that the udev riles fired when something stared playing
<chadmed> nah the udev rules will fire when the device is probed. this is important as it tells pipewire/wireplumber to ignore the visense pcm
<jeisom> roy: After the u-boot countdown hit escape to get the grub menu is what I was told. Then edit the menu entry by typing e. add "init=/bin/bash" to the kernel options
<j`ey> chadmed: at least there's two of us this fails for. both used the minimal install.. but I cant see why that would affect things
<roy> jeisom: Thank you. Let me try that
