hi asahi team - after years of monitoring this space, i finally got myself a M2 air and I am genuinely impressed how good the out-of-the box fedora-asahi experience is. well done everyone involved, this is fantastic work!

somewhat beyond asahi's immediate sphere of influence however, i was hoping to be able to set up google's android SDK to build android apps on asahi
<cshbicos>
unfortunately i can't seem to find aarch64 build and platform tools that actually work - has anyone else had any success and can share?
<tpw_rules>
it's probably not possible right now due to the page size issue

Where is the source for the various os options on https://cdn.asahilinux.org/os/? I'd like to find out how they're built (e.g. uefi-only-20231012-1.zip), if possible

zzywysm: I see, thank you! Do you happen to know where the fedora ones are built from? I found https://github.com/leifliddy/asahi-fedora-builder but this doesn't seem to be the official one
<ktz>
hey guys, even assuming no distro support, should I be able to at least see them showing up in wpctl status for instance? j313 on 6.6.0-3-asahi alpinelinux. I've got the alsa conf files in place fyi btw
<ktz>
chadmed: in case you're around, do you think its worth investing any time in hope I get it working on my distro?

<nicolas17>
ktz: your distro may not have enabled speakers in the kernel / devicetree
<ktz>
I thought dts is something a distro has almost no interest having it changed from upstream, I'm not sure
<ktz>
I tried looking for a tool to help me pick up more info on the binary dtbs and move from there
<ktz>
but since alpinelinux does no actual patching to the device trees when packaging the kernel I would assume they are identical
<chadmed>
ktz: that kernel should have things enabled in the dt by default
<chadmed>
wait no not for j313
<ktz>
I have a strong feeling I haven't had my firmware in check forever and it could likely be firmware as well
<chadmed>
anyway that kernel shouldnt need patching at all, all that's required is asahi-audio and speakersafetyd being installed
<chadmed>
a simple matter of packaging them
<ktz>
yes I managed to get the daemon compiled but wont work cause it can't find any relevant card

Hi
<smarkusg>
You have to forgive me, I have not used IRC for years.
<smarkusg>
I have a request related to QEMU. Unfortunately I do not have the space to install Asahi Linux on my Mac. I have Linux on macOS using qemu, but I am not able to check that there.
<smarkusg>
There is a problem with different session speeds on macOS. Would anyone be so kind as to have qemu-system-ppc installed to check how it looks on Asahi linux?
<ydalton>
slp: how could i make a microVM with DRM native contxt based on debian? i'd really like to use wine but it seems it's broken on fedora. i ran a real debian VM with wine and it worked flawlessly
titi has joined #asahi
<j`ey>
package slp's mesa is a place to start
<ydalton>
i don't know how any of his magic works
<j`ey>
the main component is a mesa fork
<j`ey>
how is wine broken on fedora?
<ydalton>
in x86 land it does work, but using it in his krunvm it never works
<ydalton>
i tried importing an empty wineprefix from my desktop and it still didn't work
<ydalton>
both native and under FEX it never worked
<j`ey>
well that might not be a fedora issue

i have a question regarding linux on arm in general, to my understanding every arm chip is different, that's why even though there are linux arm versions it wont boot on any phone/any chip(apple sillicon included) as opposed to traditional x86 chips where you just download the amd64.iso and create a bootable USB
<holiday>
so how will this be handled in the future? supposedly there will be intel chips, amd chips, nvidia, apple, and qualcomm
<j`ey>
it's the peripherals really, not the actual CPU
tobhe_ is now known as tobhe
<ydalton>
because PCs are basically all identical
titi has joined #asahi
<holiday>
well in the future i suppose they will be very different?
<ydalton>
boot process is the same, one of two CPUs, etc...
<holiday>
i can boot any linux on the intel macs
<holiday>
cant boot any arm linux on arm macs
<ydalton>
and they have acpi so autodiscovery of hardware
<sven>
it’s because people wrote and upstreamed drivers for most x86 hardware
<sven>
we’re not there yet for Apple silicon machine but eventually you should be able to install any distribution once everything’s upstreamed
<holiday>
ohh so it's not a limiting future
<j`ey>
and you need the special install step, cos of macOS
<holiday>
j`ey: yeah well thanks to asahi team any distro can use the installer :D
<sven>
try installing a regular distro on t2 macs, afaik most hardware won’t work
<j`ey>
holiday: some people are running only upstream linux on their asahi machines
<ydalton>
yeah you need a custom t2 iso
<j`ey>
(mac mini with no sound or gpu works fine with an upstream kernel)
<holiday>
im actually happy to hear that
<sven>
it’s really not about acpi or whatever else. the only reason is that people wrote and upstreamed drivers for most x86 stuff
<holiday>
but why arent phones able to us arm linux? is it beacuse nobody was interested into upstreaming things?
<holiday>
use*
<j`ey>
yep
<sven>
pretty much
<ydalton>
it's the same with the android sphere, only certain custom roms work with certain models of phones
<holiday>
i see thankss
<jn>
only some communities, such as postmarketOS, do some upstreaming work for phones
<jn>
vendors also upstream some stuff, but a large patchset still remains downstream
<sven>
there’s e.g. a Broadcom wifi driver in the kernel and a completely separate android driver with support for different hardware

On t2 macbook "just" keyboard and touchpad and touchbar do not work with all upstream, so no special distro or installer required, vanilla Debian works.
<PaulFertser>
Indeed, it was nice to see Asahi work was beneficial to t2 owners as well. Not all of them had broken wifi/bluetooth though.

I wonder why replacing the speakers is so hard, did anyone saw any specifics about the procedure? The one I found on ifixit didn't look complicated at all.
