how come the asahi kernel driver doesn't handle driver removal properly? is it a limitation in the GPU firmware itself?
Ariadne has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<j`ey>
do you get a kernel splat?

<ydalton>
i was messing in early init and when i tried to remove the asahi driver it said something like "module removal not properly implemented!"
<j`ey>
it wouldn't surprise me if it was a similar situation to system hibernation, which is clean shutdpwn/restart of GPU (and other things) are basically hard/impossible
<kidplayer666>
so we aint getting hybernation on linux?
<kidplayer666>
ah shucks
<j`ey>
the aim is to try get s2idle good enough
<ChaosPrincess>
i thought s3 sleep is possible, just deprioritized, while kexec is the impossible one
<leio>
I assume hibernation isn't what was meant then above, but s2ram?
<ChaosPrincess>
hibernation = s2disk, (s3) sleep = s2ram, s2idle = sth like system freeze
<ydalton>
which one can macOS do currently?
<j`ey>
what's the actual difference between s2disk and s2ram?
<j`ey>
s2ram I guess has to keep the ram 'alive', but is everything else dead?
<ChaosPrincess>
memory power is off, and if battery reaches zero, you still keep the state
<ChaosPrincess>
macos can do s2ram, idk about s2disk since you can't manually trigger it, but i _think_ it does it if it is in s2ram and battery is about to run out
<j`ey>
(I think s2disk etc are much better than sleep/hibernation which are vague!)
<ChaosPrincess>
blame msft for conflating s3 and s0ix in new windows versions :P
<ydalton>
oh yeah, that nonsense
<ChaosPrincess>
(also blame x86 oems for not unable to write firmware code to do s3 correctly)
<ydalton>
and also blame some OEMs for disabling s3 in firmware
<ChaosPrincess>
*for not being able
<j`ey>
I haven't used windows since XP :P
<ydalton>
unfortunately for some things i might be forced by my school to use either windows or macOS
<ydalton>
but for the most part i've been on linux fine
<ChaosPrincess>
j`ey: x86 is still the dominant platform, so giving parallels to how it is done there is useful
<j`ey>
no comment!
<leio>
some do a hybrid, s2ram and "s2disk" at the same time, so if power was still there it'll just resume from suspend, but then still work when battery ran out; and yeah, nowadays windows and such I think set some kind of a trigger to kind of wake up and save to disk when battery is about to run out instead; so you really meant hibernation (writing to disk and doing a full cold boot with it) isn't possible with apple silicon?
<ChaosPrincess>
apparently hibernation is possible, just hard
<ChaosPrincess>
since macos does it
<ydalton>
when you go to sleep on macOS, is that hibernation or just suspend
<ChaosPrincess>
hybrid
<leio>
with hibernation data being used, I would assume you get the startup bell sound when you come out of "sleep"
<ydalton>
Think Differentâ„¢
<j`ey>
how long do you actually want to close your laptop without using or charging it?
<ChaosPrincess>
hybrid sleep is fine, it usually is what the user wants
<ChaosPrincess>
j`ey: how about closing a low-ish battery laptop on friday evening and then not opening it until monday morning?
<j`ey>
ok fair, that I sometimes do when going away
<j`ey>
but I would probably just turn it off if I saw it was lowish battery
<kidplayer666>
ydalton: Microsoft is doing it too with Windows Modern Standby, the difference is that since it's still x86 they dont have the massive efficiency of arm to offset crappy sleep
<ChaosPrincess>
i do not think arm vs x86 is relevant for that, the bigger problem is that windows can sometimes wake up, choose violence, and then drain your entire battery while trying to install updates.
<kidplayer666>
i heard macos also did that every now and then
<kidplayer666>
Chaos Princess: one of the easiest examples was if the sleep was initiated while plugged in, but unplugged while sleeping
<ChaosPrincess>
well, thats an easy fix, they just need to get around to doing it
<kidplayer666>
yep
<kidplayer666>
but michealsoft cant get their crap together
<kidplayer666>
and focus on every random trend instead of focusisng on the core user experience
<ydalton>
year of the linux desktop :D

hi
<aintrxiden>
is it safe to daily drive asahi linux ?
<j`ey>
aintrxiden: yep
<aintrxiden>
i need a native linux distro but i only have a M2 mac in the hand
<aintrxiden>
alr no driver problems etc ?
<aintrxiden>
like audio
<aintrxiden>
camera
<aintrxiden>
bluetooth
<j`ey>
audio isnt enabled for the m2 macs just yet
<j`ey>
camera and bt should be
<aintrxiden>
is audio enabled with usb dac or just jack headphones ?
<aintrxiden>
or its just the speakers ?
<j`ey>
yup jack and usb should work
<janneg>
speakers and microphone (if present) are not supported. headphone/headset jack works
