<alicejustplaying> I've been trying out Asahi Linux on my 14" M1 Pro (both the KDE and the Gnome variety) and noticed that the colors on the built-in display are oversaturated compared to whatever's default on macOS, is there any way to tweak that right now?

<alicejustplaying> I found this which was about external monitors — does this mean I can't tweak anything at all on my laptop either? https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/oversaturated-external-monitor-and-color-profile-support-of-wayland/97501/2
<holiday> alicejustplaying: lower the brightness? ik it sounds like a troll response but when i want more satured colors i just bump the brightness to max
<alicejustplaying> I was at like 30-40% brightness
<alicejustplaying> the colors are 100% different, a friend with the exact same computer also comfirms it
<holiday> ohh not sure then, i always liked the color on the default installation :P we'll have to wait for a response then
<alicejustplaying> also since Chrome runs on XWayland, is it possible to fix the colors at least within Chrome?
tobhe_ has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<marcan> alicejustplaying: not until Wayland supports color management like macOS, and I don't think XWayland will help you there.
<marcan> this needs compositor level support
<alicejustplaying> since Gnome is also running under Wayland I'm assuming the issue is the same?
<marcan> yes
<alicejustplaying> Do you know what exactly is happening? Like, what goes exactly wrong right now that makes things oversaturated
<marcan> it is possible to get the display controller to display sRGB, but there's no particular way to force that in the driver right now without hacking the code, and given how picky DCP is about colorspaces I'm reluctant to start adding options like that until we understand it better
<marcan> nothing goes wrong
<marcan> the desktop is simply colorspace-unaware
<marcan> most people assume sRGB while Mac monitors have Display P3 colorspaces
<marcan> something designed for sRGB naively displayed on a P3 display will naturally look oversaturated
<alicejustplaying> right
<alicejustplaying> will make note to check things out once Plasma 6 is out
<marcan> on a hypothetical compositor with color management, loading a Display P3 profile would give correct color
<marcan> yeah, it's being worked on :)
<j`ey> I dont think plasma 6 will have it either
<marcan> pretty sure it will at some point
<marcan> it's in the works
<j`ey> well 6.x sure, I meant 6.0 :P
<alicejustplaying> right
<marcan> sure :p
<alicejustplaying> if I somehow switched back to X11, I assume I could get correct colors but a whole lot else would be broken, right
<marcan> you'd still have to set up color management, it doesn't magically work
<alicejustplaying> yeah no that bit i know
<marcan> I've never tried it on X but yeah, expect tearing and a flickering cursor and worse performance and more things breaking in the future
<alicejustplaying> right
<alicejustplaying> thanks for the infos
<marcan> the support mentioned there is enough for what you want, i.e. forcing everything to sRGB
<alicejustplaying> can I just install plasma 6 beta for that?
<marcan> you need Fedora Rawhide for that but if you really like living on the edge... (we make zero promises about rawhide, it gets approximately no testing right now)
<alicejustplaying> right, lots of dragons
<marcan> I'll start testing it more soon since we want Plasma 6 to be solid by the time F40 is released
<marcan> j`ey: so yeah, the first release of Plasma 6 will indeed have enough color management for this problem
<j`ey> :o
<j`ey> neat
<marcan> (just probably not actual support for color managed apps with more-than-sRGB colorspaces)
<alicejustplaying> marcan: do you mean things like, image editors, or?
<marcan> and video players, etc
<alicejustplaying> right
<alicejustplaying> if i can just get srgb everywhere on my m1 pro i'll already be happy :)
<marcan> the F40 branch is scheduled for early February; by then we should be testing and I'll probably start running it myself, so I'd be more comfortable with people running it by then
<marcan> and then April is release
<marcan> so just a few months left before you can more safely get what you want :)
<alicejustplaying> great, thanks
<j`ey> so KWin could use a P3 profile?
<j`ey> and it would adjust sRGB to P3?
<marcan> yes

<kidplayer666> No idea, it was weird
<j`ey> the S taint is expected, and so is the G it seems, that seems to be the 'OK' case
<j`ey> kidplayer666: so if you want to provide info, journalctl -b -1 will help, if was the previous boot, or you can try -2 etc
<ydalton> i'm guessing it knows that there was a problem but it checked the taint value and said "the kernel devs can't help you with this"
<j`ey> I thought there was some talk of only tainting the kernel if you actually ran a VM, not during init
