<rennj>
and i could have done it with xen,qemu,virtualbox, but i chose vmware...cause before esxi/esx/gsx was vmware-server which ran on linux, freebsd, winblow before intel/amd had vt-x/svm
<rennj>
im really glad haiku and redhat silverblue got with the times...besides virtual machines and virtual os's....

hello everyone! I am relatively new to open source and I thought this was a challenging and fun project to contribute to. what would you guys say is the best way to try and get started on contributing to this project and skills I should learn?

Checkout the sourcecode, learn to build and run your own images. (Don't be afraid to ask questions.) Then find small things in the OS or an app you think you can improve maybe.
<tqh>
I started with writing small tools for BeOS myself, then helped porting Firefox, then working on the OS.
<tqh>
Firefox for BeOS that was.. Not modern firefox
<badkeming[m]>
tqh: There's a joke that this is the inevitable glide path when you begin doing BeOS/Haiku stuff xD (thanks to win8linux for pointing it out to me the other day)

Hmm.
<nephele>
Sure, it would be possible. Nobody investigated anything in that area though
<nephele>
nVidia released a driver for linux which is open source, by basically moving the guts into a firmware microcontroller on the gpu itself. This makes it easier for us to reuse this also
<nephele>
If anyone would start writing a driver anytime. Dunno

<Skipp_OSX>
sorta, it can be used on a laptop, it has a battery monitor, but there are no power saving features whatsoever so you close the lid and the machine keeps running at full speed.
<HaikuUser>
i have installed it on my old thinkpad, but some thing doesent work, like trakpad and internal webcam
rennj has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<Skipp_OSX>
trackpad should be able to work, webcam probably not we just don't have the drivers for them
<Skipp_OSX>
are you sure the trackpad isn't disabled in the bios?
<HaikuUser>
actually the trackpad doesent, but i use a external mouse... But thanx
<HaikuUser>
:)
<Skipp_OSX>
yeah no webcam yet sorry, there are a few USB ones that are supported but not very many and I don't think any of the built-in thinkpad ones work.
<HaikuUser>
i'm trying because i'm curious, after many years using win/mac/linux... i'v decided to give it a run
<HaikuUser>
but i'm big noob and i don't know nothing about beOS
<HaikuUser>
i think is maybe good if ai read the "beBOOK" ^_^
<Skipp_OSX>
well we don't have 3d yet and the browser is not quite there yet but the system is functional for a lot of stuff and has some unique productivity features. Don't bother reading the BeBook that's more a programmers reference, what you want to read is the User Guide.
