<B2IA> (AGMS) John2, there's a setting in BeOS 5 Network Preferences for NE2000 cards, use the "custom" button to add it. Don't know what IRQ and port you need, try the most common one first.
<B2IA> (AGMS) Seems to be port 300, IRQ 5, John2. Once you got the card added, there's a Config button to specify other values.

<nosycat> So, I've been trying out more stuff in WebPositive.
<nosycat> Turns out Feather Wiki works. The "ruffled" edition, anyway.
<nosycat> Also this cool thing: https://qbjs.org/
<nephele> Well "most" stuff should work (except stuff requiring webgl, or video streaming stuff)
HaikuUser has joined #haiku
<nosycat> So it seems! I had some doubts, after all the talk of "old" versus "new" WebKit.
mmu_man has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<nephele> What do you mean? we use a recent webkit revision
<nephele> if you are talking about webkit1 vs webkit2 that is an API destinction, but it is unrelated to the webkit version we use
<nephele> we do need to move to webkit2 but even when we do that won't make webgl work or make our video streaming code work better ;)
<nosycat> Ah.
<nosycat> Okay then!
mmu_man has joined #haiku
<nosycat> In other news, what's with all the big updates lately? :)
<nephele> such as?
<nosycat> GCC. Twice in a row. :P
<nosycat> And the LLVM libraries.
_Dario_ has joined #haiku
<nephele> 13.1 is nielx[m]'s doing, and after that 13.2 which includes bugfixes for 13.1
<nephele> 13.2 is not that "major" an update, we do try to stay with a current compiler anyhow :)
<nosycat> No, but it was still the whole package, which is hefty. Just curious.
<nephele> in size certainly, mostly because gcc is big ;)
<nephele> but then so is llvm
<nosycat> That's what I mean. It's kind of noticeable on my old netbook.
<nephele> You don't have to have gcc installed if you only want to use the OS
<nosycat> In a pinch, yeah, I'll uninstall gcc.
<nephele> Also delete the package if it's disk space you seek :)
<nosycat> I'm just a long-time Linux user, the OS feels broken without it.
<nephele> You can probably "just" get a bigger disk for older computers too, many internal ide/sata disks for laptops or netbooks are actually replaceable, especially for older ones
<nosycat> The network was acting up today.
<nephele> hmm, you can probably have the gcc package on a thumb drive too and connect and then mount the package when needed
<nephele> to be honest, i've not tried this out yet, but would be totally doable iirc
<nosycat> Interesting, thanks for the tip!
<nosycat> Also 32-bit Haiku still comes with gcc2.95, right?
<nosycat> Should be good enough in a pinch.
<nephele> It *also* comes with gcc2.9, but you should not ever use this, unless you want to build haiku itself, or BeOS applications that could not be updated for the itanium abi yet (as in, rely on 2.9 gcc behaviour)
<nephele> You can just use gcc 13.2 normally
<nosycat> Still, in case I have to get rid of 13.2
<nephele> Get rid of 2.9 instead? :P
<nosycat> Eh, doesn't matter. Okay then.
<nephele> you won't be able to compile most code with 2.9 by now, i guess
<nosycat> Certainly not C++11, I imagine. That would be a speed bump.
<nephele> You can get c++98, i think
<nephele> unless you want to compile really old code you stole from some archive I wouldn't bother with it ;)
<nosycat> Normally I wouldn't.
<nephele> Do you know how haiku "installs" packages? There is really no downside to having them on a thumb drive, or maybe downloading them on demand
HaikuUser has quit [Quit: Vision[]: i've been blurred!]
<nosycat> I have an idea, yes.
<nosycat> But didn't realize beforehand that the network would misbehave.
<nephele> Oh, well, we have resumeable package downloads
<nephele> That should mitigate that somewhat
<nosycat> Where do I look? `man pkgman`?
<nephele> for what?
<nosycat> To enable that.
<nephele> There is no need to enable that :D, why would you ever want this disabled?
<nosycat> Didn't realize it was automatic.
<nephele> just install the package again, or start the update again and it will pick up on it
<nosycat> Will do!
<nosycat> Got to pay more attention from now on.
<nephele> Hmm, wait, am i confusing this with full package downloads beeing reused :g. I'd better check again heh
<nosycat> I can also update individual packages, right?
<nephele> sure
Anarchos has joined #haiku
<nephele> If you use SoftwareUpdater it does the *equivalant* of "pkgman full-sync
<nephele> (it doesn't actually run pkgman, of course :D)
<nosycat> There you go. I just have to remember how old it is.
<nephele> but with pkgman you can do more fine grained downloads and such
<nosycat> It also uses less RAM and CPU.
<nephele> old?
<nosycat> It's an EeePC 701. :D
<nephele> ah
<nephele> I also have an eeepc, but likely a different one
<nephele> Yeah we do have partial downloads in tha package kit
<nosycat> I'll try to remember and take advantage next time.
<nephele> Basically, while the package is downloading it will put an extended atribute on the file saving to where it was downloaded
<nephele> and next time the package kit will reuse the file, since it is the one it wanted, and then figure out it is a partial download and resume
<nephele> It's automatic as such, no need to do anything explicitly
<nosycat> Nice system!
<nosycat> Means I can interrupt it in an emergency.
<nephele> Sure
<Anarchos> nosycat i use haiku on a zoostorm fizzbook
<nosycat> What's that?!
<nosycat> Oh, I see.
<Anarchos> this light machine seems faster than my toshiba satellite laptop...
<Anarchos> anyway the touchscreen doesn't work on haiku.
<nosycat> Aw.
<nephele> Haiku didn't boot on steam deck, unfortunately :D
<nosycat> Luckily I have other old machines to try it on.
<nosycat> As soon as I can set them up somewhere.
<nephele> I run haiku natively on like three dell optiplex computers
<nephele> and three laptops
<nosycat> Ooh, that's my daily driver right now, a 780.
<Anarchos> nephele i have haiku64 on a quadcore optiplex too
<nephele> for me optiplex 7010 USFF
<nephele> "just" an i3 with 8gb of ram, but way more than sufficient for haiku
<nosycat> Something to keep in mind when Debian 10 goes out of warranty.
<nosycat> I even have a spare partition to use.
* Anarchos still wants to run and tweak haiku/beos on his K6-2
<nephele> well, it's not a server OS if you want to use it for that :)
<nosycat> You still have a working K6 machine? :O
<Anarchos> not if it works, but i still have the motherboard

<nephele> "forgetting to unpack the .zip" is by far my #1 problem when installing haiku :(
<bjorkint0sh> nephele, why not automate it?
<bjorkint0sh> with a script?
<nosycat> :D
<nephele> automate what?
<bjorkint0sh> the unpacking process.
<nephele> launching a script seems like more work than just doing it? :P
<bjorkint0sh> is it?

<nephele> I'm so happy about the /dev/disk/usb/ path :D
<nephele> it's much harder to overwrite my system accidentally that way :3
<nosycat> Sensible drive and partition names, what a concept.
<nephele> Virtual / is also magic!
<nephele> Works just fine on linux too, i did make my own distro to test that out. but established linux distros don't want to risk changing that
<nosycat> Ooh!
<nephele> Drives are mounted in Haiku as "/Drivename"
<nephele> it's really... uhh obvious :D
<nosycat> Good!
<nephele> You can select the Haiku drive on the desktop and press f2 to rename it
<nephele> this will also update the partition name on the drive itself ;)
<nosycat> Interesting.
