for some reason there is a ReadAttr function that doesn't match the ReadAttr documentation on either the Haiku Book or the Be Book

told a build system not to rebuild a file that didn't change by fiddling with its date modified :)

That would have taken hours, otherwise, rebuilding all of the files that depend on that file!

zard: currently have such a project where as part of the build some IDs are automatically assigned and then hardcoded (think of enums that are ints on the CPU level).
