hello dalme_
<dalme_>
hello
<cluelessnewuser>
seems we are the only 2 awake :D
<dalme_>
I'm in Europe so that makes sense I guess
<PulkoMandy>
I'm here as well, do you have a specific question, or just checking if people are alive? :)
<cluelessnewuser>
PulkoMandy: yeah i have issues with installation
<cluelessnewuser>
been 1 day an half now :P guess this makes me pretty much an idiot lol
<cluelessnewuser>
dalme_: i'm in europe too
<PulkoMandy>
what's the problem exactly?
<cluelessnewuser>
PulkoMandy: i created a bootable haiku usb stick and was trying to use it as an installer for another usb drive i would want to use
<cluelessnewuser>
problem is that the installer won't make it bootable
<PulkoMandy>
yes, that should be possible
<cluelessnewuser>
no matter what i try
<PulkoMandy>
you have several things to do manually to make it bootable for EFI systems currently
<PulkoMandy>
we have not finished integrating that into installer
<cluelessnewuser>
i was wondering if there's a way to create a "bloated" haiku bootable drive that uses up the whole usb key i already have and works
<cluelessnewuser>
like adding a very big file to be deleted :D
<cluelessnewuser>
not sure this makes sense
<PulkoMandy>
you need to: create a partition table on the USB stick, if it already has one, make sure it has a standard bootsector (you can use the writembr command from Terminal). Create an EFI system partition with the rght UUID, for mat using fAT filesystem, and copy the EFI bootloader there (you should be able to copy the files from your exiting EFI partition on the USB stick). Create a BFS partition and format i
<PulkoMandy>
t, and installl Haiku there (this last part is the only thing Installer will do for you)
<PulkoMandy>
you can create haiku images of any size if you build haiku from sources, but if that's the easiest way to solve this, we have really failed at something :/
<cluelessnewuser>
honestly seems a lot more complicated than i expected :P i mean if i could balena etch on my USB drive using all the space i have it would work wondefully
<PulkoMandy>
you can follow this guide: https://www.haiku-os.org/guides/uefi_booting/ which could be made better by adding screenshots of each step. You can use DriveSetup for creating the partition table and partitions
<PulkoMandy>
yes, as I said, this should all be automated but we haven't done that yet, so for now there are some manual steps involved

a few years ago everyone more or less knew how to do this because windows would need to be reinstalled evey few months. It seems other OS have made a lot of progrress in that area and now people don't need to think about these things anymore. That's good news for how other OS are doing, I suppose :)
<PulkoMandy>
but we need to catch up now

mmh i was trying to find a way to add space to the anyboot usb image i write with etcher :D would that actually work or i'm just being silly?^^

<PulkoMandy>
no, there are two problems with that: we don't have a way to resize BFS partition (another piece of code that we need to finish), and, in the way the anyboot image is built currently, the EFI partition is at the end of the image rather than at the start, so resizing the BFS partition would overwrite the EFI one
<cluelessnewuser>
oooh unfortunate, but at least i haven't spent much time trying :D

<cluelessnewuser>
mmh to simply the process, could i etch the image on both USB drives, and install from one to another keeping the bootable part intact or i would incur in the same issues ?
<cluelessnewuser>
sorry for being annoying, btw
<PulkoMandy>
you will have the same problem, the EFI partition will be somewhere in the middle of the disk
<PulkoMandy>
you will have to erase it and recreate it at the start instead
<PulkoMandy>
so it's not really simplifying
<cluelessnewuser>
i see, i guess no simple solutions at the moment
<phschafft>
is there a problem with swaping those partions?

PulkoMandy: thanks for your help and insight, i guess I'll keep following progresses on youtube and wait for a bit more time, i do not think that building from source is any easier to try the system from an usb stick with enough space to install and work :D
<cluelessnewuser>
but i really have to say I loved the little i could try, the look and feel of the OS is totally amazing
<cluelessnewuser>
have a nice day everybody!
